Vitamin E Circular Dichroism Studies: Insights Into Conformational Changes Induced By The Solvent’S Polarity, Drew Marquardt, Brad J. Van Oosten, Mikel Ghelfi, Jeffrey Atkinson, Thad A. Harroun

Chemistry and Biochemistry Publications

We used circular dichroism (CD) to study differences in CD spectra between α-, δ-, and methylated-α-tocopherol in solvents with different polarities. CD spectra of the different tocopherol structures differ from each other in intensity and peak locations, which can be attributed to chromanol substitution and the ability to form hydrogen bonds. In addition, each structure was examined in different polarity solvents using the Reichardt index—a measure of the solvent’s ionizing ability, and a direct measurement of solvent–solute interactions. Differences across solvents indicate that hydrogen bonding is a key contributor to CD spectra at 200 nm. These results are a first …

Core Competencies For 21st Century Carl Librarians (Carl Competencies) Survey Results: Unpublished, Jennifer Soutter

Leddy Library Publications

Consists of the data collected about the Core Competencies for 21st Century CARL Librarians. The hypothesis tested was that the CARL Competencies were not being used by academic librarians. If they were being used, the intent was to discover any differences in their use and whether these differences were related to their positions within their respective libraries, and thus their potential use for ideological control at the administrative level. Unfortunately, less than 6% of the population responded. This research was not able to help build a more accurate picture of the current landscape of the use of competencies in …

Chickadees Faced With Unpredictable Food Increase Fat Reserves But Certain Components Of Their Immune Function Decline, Emily A. Cornelius, François Vézina, Lyette Regimbald, Fanny Hallot, Magali Petit, Oliver P. Love Dec 2016

Chickadees Faced With Unpredictable Food Increase Fat Reserves But Certain Components Of Their Immune Function Decline, Emily A. Cornelius, François Vézina, Lyette Regimbald, Fanny Hallot, Magali Petit, Oliver P. Love

Biological Sciences Publications

In winter, temperate resident birds are often faced with periodic low natural food availability. This reduction or unpredictability in resource availability might then have a negative impact on immune function, given that immune system support is highly resource dependent. We investigated the balance between energetic and immune management in captive black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapilus) by manipulating the predictability of resources. The control group received food ad lib. every day, while the experimental group received a reduced amount of food on random days and food ad lib. on all other days. We measured two key metrics of energetic management (body and …

Use Of Solid N2 Surfaces In Metastable Particle Detection, Wladyslaw Kedzierski, J. W. Mcconkey Dec 2016

Use Of Solid N2 Surfaces In Metastable Particle Detection, Wladyslaw Kedzierski, J. W. Mcconkey

Physics Publications

A novel detector is described in which solid nitrogen at 17 K is used as the most significant element. Metastable particles impinge on this element and immediately transfer their internal energy to the solid nitrogen producing photons, via excimer formation or otherwise, whose wavelength depends on the metastable being detected and the energy transfer process. The performance of the instrument for the detection of atomic oxygen and molecular nitrogen metastables is discussed.

Combined Bulk-Rock Hf- And Nd-Isotope Compositions Of Mesoarchaean Metavolcanic Rocks From The Ivisaartoq Supracrustal Belt, Sw Greenland: Deviations From The Mantle Array Caused By Crustal Recycling, Ali Polat

Earth & Environmental Sciences Publications

Bulk-rock Lu-Hf and Sm-Nd isotope compositions, as well as major and trace element data are presented for metavolcanic rocks from the Mesoarchaean (ca. 3075 Ma) Ivisaartoq Supracrustal Belt in the Nuuk region of southern West Greenland. The εHft calculated at 3075 Ma range from +0.8 to +3.1 and the corresponding εNdt values range from +0.7 to +3.6, which forms an array that is displaced off the mantle array for these two isotopic systems. Primitive mantle normalized trace element plots of the metabasalts display negative Nb- and Ti-anomalies in combination with the elevated Th abundances, which is consistent with …

Conservation Implications Of A Lack Of Relationship Between Baseline Glucocorticoids And Fitness In A Wild Passerine, Christine L. Madliger, Oliver P. Love Dec 2016

Conservation Implications Of A Lack Of Relationship Between Baseline Glucocorticoids And Fitness In A Wild Passerine, Christine L. Madliger, Oliver P. Love

Integrative Biology Publications

The application of physiological measures to conservation monitoring has been gaining momentum and, while a suite of physiological traits are available to ascertain disturbance and condition in wildlife populations, glucocorticoids (i.e., GCs; cortisol and corticosterone) are the most heavily employed. The interpretation of GC levels as sensitive indicators of population change necessitates that GCs and metrics of population persistence are linked. However, the relationship between GCs and fitness may be highly context-dependent, changing direction, or significance, depending on the GC measure, fitness metric, life history stage, or other intrinsic and extrinsic contexts considered. We examined the relationship between baseline plasma …

Lithological, Structural, And Geochemical Characteristics Of The Mesoarchean Târtoq Greenstone Belt, South-West Greenland, And The Chugach-Prince William Accretionary Complex, Southern Alaska: Evidence For Uniformitarian Plate-Tectonic Processes, Ali Polat Nov 2016

Lithological, Structural, And Geochemical Characteristics Of The Mesoarchean Târtoq Greenstone Belt, South-West Greenland, And The Chugach-Prince William Accretionary Complex, Southern Alaska: Evidence For Uniformitarian Plate-Tectonic Processes, Ali Polat

Earth & Environmental Sciences Publications

The Mesoarchean Târtoq greenstone belt, South-West Greenland, consists of tectonically imbricated slices of metamorphosed basalt, gabbro, peridotite and sedimentary rocks, and is intruded by felsic rocks (now mylonites) with well-preserved duplex structures, representing a relict accretionary prism. The Târtoq greenstone belt is a remnant of a supra-subduction zone ophiolite that originated as back-arc basin oceanic crust. Following the initiation of intra-oceanic subduction, the back-arc oceanic crust accreted to the overriding plate, forming an accretionary prism. The felsic mylonites are compositionally akin to Archean tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite suites (TTG). Field observations, along with geochemical and zircon U-Pb age data, indicate that the protoliths …

Two Giants Of Geology: Kevin Charles Anthony Burke And John Frederic Dewey, Ali Polat Nov 2016

Two Giants Of Geology: Kevin Charles Anthony Burke And John Frederic Dewey, Ali Polat

Earth & Environmental Sciences Publications

This special issue of the Canadian Journal of the Earth Sciences celebrates the career of two of the greatest geologists of our time, who, during the last three decades of the 20th and the first decade of the 21st century, have put their stamp on the tectonic interpretation of the Earth’s behaviour (Burke also extended his efforts into extra-terrestrial space). How fortunate it is for geology that they are both still active and, by all appearances, are likely to remain so for some time to come. It is an immense honour for us as their students and fellow geologists to …

Did The Paris Agreement Fail To Incorporate Human Rights In Operative Provisions? Not If You Consider The 2016 Dgs, Patricia Galvao-Ferreira Oct 2016

Did The Paris Agreement Fail To Incorporate Human Rights In Operative Provisions? Not If You Consider The 2016 Dgs, Patricia Galvao-Ferreira

Law Publications

The implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change should follow a rights-centred approach, not only because negative climate change impacts can directly affect several human rights, but also because actions to address climate change may also provoke unintended human rights consequences. During the negotiations that led up to the signing of the Paris Agreement in December 2015, states included an explicit reference to human rights only in the preamble of the legal norm, negotiating other direct references to human rights out of operative provisions. The outcome of negotiations raised the question of whether states have missed an opportunity to …

Energetic Physiology Mediates Individual Optimization Of Breeding Phenology In A Migratory Arctic Seabird, Holly L. Hennin, Jöel Bêty, Pierre Legagneux, H. Grant Gilchrist, Tony D. Williams, Oliver P. Love Oct 2016

Energetic Physiology Mediates Individual Optimization Of Breeding Phenology In A Migratory Arctic Seabird, Holly L. Hennin, Jöel Bêty, Pierre Legagneux, H. Grant Gilchrist, Tony D. Williams, Oliver P. Love

Integrative Biology Publications

The influence of variation in individual state on key reproductive decisions impacting fitness is well appreciated in evolutionary ecology. Rowe et al. (1994) developed a condition-dependent individual optimization model predicting that three key factors impact the ability of migratory female birds to individually optimize breeding phenology tomaximize fitness in seasonal environments: arrival condition, arrival date, and ability to gain in condition on the breeding grounds. While empirical studies have confirmed that greater arrival body mass and earlier arrival dates result in earlier laying, no study has assessed whether individual variation in energetic management of condition gain effects this key fitness-related …

Morphology-Induced Defects Enhance Lipid Transfer Rates, Yan Xia, Kamil Charubin, Drew Marquardt, Frederick A. Heberle, John Katsaras, Jianhui Tian, Xiaolin Cheng, Ying Liu, Mu Ping Nieh

Chemistry and Biochemistry Publications

Molecular transfer between nanoparticles has been considered to have important implications regarding nanoparticle stability. Recently, the interparticle spontaneous lipid transfer rate constant for discoidal bicelles was found to be very different from spherical, unilamellar vesicles (ULVs). Here, we investigate the mechanism responsible for this discrepancy. Analysis of the data indicates that lipid transfer is entropically favorable, but enthalpically unfavorable with an activation energy that is independent of bicelle size and long- to short-chain lipid molar ratio. Moreover, molecular dynamics simulations reveal a lower lipid dissociation energy cost in the vicinity of interfaces ("defects") induced by the segregation of the long- …

Geochemistry, Nd, Pb And Sr Isotope Systematics, And U-Pb Zircon Ages Of The Neoarchean Bad Vermilion Lake Greenstone Belt And Spatially Associated Granitic Rocks, Western Superior Province, Canada., Ali Polat

Earth & Environmental Sciences Publications

The ca. 2720 Ma Neoarchean Bad Vermilion Lake (BVL) greenstone belt, in the western Superior Province, Canada, is composed of a suite of tholeiitic to calc-alkaline basalts to rhyolites, volcaniclastic rocks, gabbros, and Timiskaming-type siliciclastic sedimentary rocks. The greenstone belt was intruded by Neoarchean granitic rocks, and underwent greenschist facies metamorphism and intense deformation, resulting in mobilization of many elements (e.g., Rb, Ba, Sr, K, U, Pb).

The high-field strength element and rare earth element systematics of the volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks, and gabbros are consistent with subduction zone geochemical signatures, suggesting that the BVL greenstone belt formed in a …

Cholesterol's Location In Lipid Bilayers, Drew Marquardt, Norbert Kučerka, Stephen R. Wassall, Thad A. Harroun, John Katsaras Sep 2016

Cholesterol's Location In Lipid Bilayers, Drew Marquardt, Norbert Kučerka, Stephen R. Wassall, Thad A. Harroun, John Katsaras

Chemistry and Biochemistry Publications

It is well known that cholesterol modifies the physical properties of lipid bilayers. For example, the much studied liquid-ordered Lo phase contains rapidly diffusing lipids with their acyl chains in the all trans configuration, similar to gel phase bilayers. Moreover, the Lo phase is commonly associated with cholesterol-enriched lipid rafts, which are thought to serve as platforms for signaling proteins in the plasma membrane. Cholesterol's location in lipid bilayers has been studied extensively, and it has been shown – at least in some bilayers – to align differently from its canonical upright orientation, where its hydroxyl group is in the …

Editor's Introduction, Salma Abumeeiz

The Great Lakes Journal of Undergraduate History

Having established itself as a beacon of historiographical under- standing and undergraduate ambition, one can only imagine my excitement when presented with the opportunity to become Editor- in-Chief of e Great Lakes Journal of Undergraduate History. How- ever, to say that this process was not also intimidating would be incorrect. Readership and participation in the Journal has extended beyond the University of Windsor’s History department, into the wider Great Lakes region and around the world. e fear of doing an injustice to the outstanding individuals who have helped make this journal such a success was, at times, overbearing. However, I …

Comfort Women: The 1946-1948 Tokyo War Crimes Trials And Historical Blindness, Kathryn J. Witt Ms.

The Great Lakes Journal of Undergraduate History

This essay analyzes why the comfort women were not mentioned until recent decades. The essay starts with an overview of Japan’s colonization and formation of the Comfort Women system; next, the history of the women and a comparison between the Korean and Dutch comfort women are being compared before going into the Tokyo War Crimes Trials. It discusses historical blindness through the Tokyo War Crimes Trials. There are three factors into how the United States government officials, including General Douglas MacArthur and Joseph Berry Keenan, manipulated the trials: United States government’s conduct, the general view on gender crimes, and the …

Cleveland Zionists: Raising Awareness Of The Holocaust, Megan Moledor Sep 2016

Cleveland Zionists: Raising Awareness Of The Holocaust, Megan Moledor

The Great Lakes Journal of Undergraduate History

The question of why it took the United States so long to aid in Europe during the Holocaust has been widely debated in history, due to confusion over what groups knew about the atrocity taking place and just how much information was available. When did the United States government understand the destruction that was being done to the Jewish populations overseas? Did specific organizations try to help to raise awareness? As early as the mid-1800s, Cleveland, Ohio became home to its own active Jewish society. Making a new home, but keeping their former ideals, these groups still stayed connected to …

The Poverty Of Bureaucracy: New Left Theory And Practice In The Canadian Labour Movement During The 1960s And 1970s, Sean P. Antaya

The Great Lakes Journal of Undergraduate History

This essay examines the New Left’s impact on the Canadian labour movement in the 1960s and 1970s. Specifically, it argues that in large industrial unions such as the UAW, New Left ideas that were popular amongst the rank and file were stifled by the more conservative labour bureaucrats. However, in public sector unions and unions unaffiliated with the Canadian Labour Congress, New Left ideas were often able to flourish, and these more radical unions were sometimes able to obtain substantial gains for their members throughout the 1970s while also fostering a broader sense of class consciousness in Canadian society -- …

Insights From Molecular Dynamics On Substrate Binding And Effects Of Active Site Mutations In Delta1-Pyrroline-5-Carboxylate Dehydrogenase, Bogdan F. Ion, Mohamed M. Aboelnga, James W. Gauld

Chemistry and Biochemistry Publications

The NAD+-dependent enzyme, 1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate dehydrogenase (P5CDH), has an important role in proline and hydroxyproline catabolism for humans. Specifically, this aldehyde dehydrogenase is responsible for the oxidation of both L-glutamate- -semialdehyde (GSA) and 4-erythro-hydroxy-L-glutamate- -semialdehyde (4-OH-GSA) to their respective L-glutamate product forms. We have performed a detailed molecular dynamics (MD) study of both the reactant and product complex structures of P5CDH to gain insights into ligand binding (i.e., GSA, 4-OH-GSA, NAD+, GLU) in the active site. Moreover, our investigations were further extended to examine the structural impact of S352L, S352A, and E314A mutations on the deficiency in the P5CDH enzymatic activity. …

Optimal Disposition Decisions For A Remanufacturing System Considering Time Value Of Products, Mostafa Pazoki, Walid Abdul-Kader Jul 2016

Optimal Disposition Decisions For A Remanufacturing System Considering Time Value Of Products, Mostafa Pazoki, Walid Abdul-Kader

Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Publications

This paper studies disposition decisions of cores where the value of returns deteriorates over time. Mainly in disposition decisions, a remanufacturer is interested to determine how many units to remanufacture and to salvage. To address this research problem along with value deterioration of returns, a rough-cut mathematical model is developed by considering various parameters of interest such as selling price, salvage value and remanufacturing rate with the aim to maximize total profit. Due to uncertainty limitations, the model can provide decision-makers with relevant insights about disposition decisions. Simulation modeling techniques are used to validate the proposed model. Numerical examples are …
