A Study Exploring The Relationships Between Selected Home Experiences Of Students And Their Functioning In Language Arts At School., Maureen Therese. Schiller Jan 1991

A Study Exploring The Relationships Between Selected Home Experiences Of Students And Their Functioning In Language Arts At School., Maureen Therese. Schiller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the relationships between selected home experiences of Grade four students (N = 173), the interactions between their parents and their teachers as reported by parents on a questionnaire, and student functioning levels in Language Arts at school. Parents of above average students reported more writing experiences occurring in their homes compared to that which was reported from the parents of below average students' homes. Additionally, eleven individual items on the questionnaire also revealed correlations between the items, which were concerned with functional, pleasurable, and what appeared to be self-initiated reading and writing activities in the home, and …

Comparison And External Validation Of 40 Hz Eeg Activity In Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Reading Disability., Fred. Schmidt Jan 1991

Comparison And External Validation Of 40 Hz Eeg Activity In Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Reading Disability., Fred. Schmidt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined and compared 40 Hz EEG activity in children with Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and children with specific Reading Disability (RD). EEG activity limited to the 40 Hz range, referred to as focused arousal, is reportedly a measure of facilitatory attention processes and a foundational skill for efficient memory. Overt psychological measures of memory and attention were also administered for purposes of external validation of the focused arousal construct and to provide further clarification of memory processes in ADHD and RD children. In total, 38 right handed male children between the ages of 7 years 10 months …

Psychosocial Functioning Of Children With Learning Disabilities: The Relations Between Psychosocial Subtypes And Neuropsychological Functioning At Three Age Levels., Darren R. Fuerst Jan 1991

Psychosocial Functioning Of Children With Learning Disabilities: The Relations Between Psychosocial Subtypes And Neuropsychological Functioning At Three Age Levels., Darren R. Fuerst

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aims of this study were threefold: (1) develop a psychosocial typology of children with LD; (2) assess the external validity of the resulting typology; (3) explore the relations between age and psychosocial functioning. To this end, a sample of 728 children with LD between the ages of 7 and 13 years was constructed. All children met a commonly used set of criteria for LD (including normal intelligence, evidence of underachievement on a standardized test of academic skills, and no evidence of primary psychopathology) that has demonstrated good performance in previous research. For some analyses, children were subdivided into three …

The Associations Between The Knowledge Of Bulimia, Bulimic Tendencies, Exercise Involvement And Body-Image Distortion Among Ontario Fitness Council Members., Christine G. Ford Jan 1991

The Associations Between The Knowledge Of Bulimia, Bulimic Tendencies, Exercise Involvement And Body-Image Distortion Among Ontario Fitness Council Members., Christine G. Ford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the Bulimia Test (BULIT) and the Body Mass Index (BMI) for the women's sample indicating that as a subject's BMI increased, the higher they scored on the BULIT. A statistically significant negative correlation was found between the BULIT and age for the women's sample suggesting that as age decreases the higher the subject scored on the BULIT. If the subjects' age was low and their BMI was high they were at greater risk to score higher on the BULIT. One-way ANOVAs were calculated and found that instructors exercised significantly more than non-instructors. …

Women's Basketball Coaches' Perceptions Of Factors Influencing Decisions To Call Timeout, Alison Duke Jan 1991

Women's Basketball Coaches' Perceptions Of Factors Influencing Decisions To Call Timeout, Alison Duke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A pilot study found that offensive and defensive game events, players' emotional, physical, and attentional states, and strategy were designated as significant game factors. Head coaches of women's university basketball were asked to respond to a questionnaire designed to assess how often these variables were utilized as criteria for calling a timeout. Coaches perceived the physical state of their players to influence the calling of timeouts more significantly than the other five factors. However, university women's basketball coaches supported a three factor structure where only the mistakes made by players, the level of effort given by their players, and strategy …

The Organizational Life Cycle Of A Regional Athletic Association. The South Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association: Swossa, 1962-1990., Steven John. Gardner Jan 1991

The Organizational Life Cycle Of A Regional Athletic Association. The South Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association: Swossa, 1962-1990., Steven John. Gardner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the evolution of the South Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association (SWOSSA) from its inception in 1962 through to 1990. The Quinn and Cameron Summary Life Cycle model (1983) was the theoretical model used in this study. The three organizational life cycle stages which emerged from the research were: (1) The Creativity-Collectivity Stage, 1962 until 1967. (2) The Collectivity-Control Stage, 1968 until 1979. (3) The Elaboration of Structure Stage, 1980 until 1990. In a progression similar to Quinn and Cameron's model, SWOSSA's life cycle evolved over a number of sequential stages. Instead of 4 separate and distinct life …

Assessing Semantic Context Effects In Good And Poor Readers Using A Moving Window Paradigm., Lina. Murdaca Jan 1991

Assessing Semantic Context Effects In Good And Poor Readers Using A Moving Window Paradigm., Lina. Murdaca

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Using a moving window paradigm, sixth graders read sentences containing target words varying in context congruity, and difficulty. Mean word reading times across the varying conditions were recorded for target words, words immediately following the target word (target+1 word), and the last word of sentences. Contrary to expectations, the findings failed to yield any differences in good and poor readers' use of context. The only significant difference between good and poor readers was noted on last word reading times. Poor readers were found to read last words significantly faster than good readers. As was hypothesized, target word difficulty was found …
