Social Theory From The Second Person Perspective, Connor Cosgrove May 2024

Social Theory From The Second Person Perspective, Connor Cosgrove

Major Papers

This paper relies on the work of Charles Taylor, Rahel Jaeggi, and Harmut Rosa to develop a method of ‘second-person critique.’ This is developed in opposition to first-person critique, otherwise known as self criticism, and third-person critique, which I take to be representative of instrumental reason. I criticize instrumental reason from Taylor’s perspective, while also relying on Martin Heidegger and Martin Buber to do the same. To further develop Rosa’s theory of resonance, I rely on David Graeber. I conclude by suggesting that while phenomenology has long accounted for our embodied relationship to the world, a ‘resonant phenomenology’ that includes …

The Sex Worker Rights Movement In Canada: Challenging The 'Prostitution Laws', Sarah Beer Jan 2011

The Sex Worker Rights Movement In Canada: Challenging The 'Prostitution Laws', Sarah Beer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The contemporary movement for sex workers' rights organizes around a range of international, national, and localized grievances. They are unified in their efforts to promote and protect sex workers' human and labour rights through the decriminalization and destigmatization of sex industry work. Within the context of social movement theory, literature on the sex worker rights movement has focused mainly on its failure to mobilize due to inadequate resources, small membership base, lack of sex worker leadership and absence of influential allies. In 2007, sex workers in Toronto, Ontario and in Vancouver, British Columbia, launched constitutional challenges to their respective Provincial …

Demonstrating Identities: Citizenship, Multiculturalism And Canadian-Tamil Identities, Anuppiriya Sriskandarajah Jan 2010

Demonstrating Identities: Citizenship, Multiculturalism And Canadian-Tamil Identities, Anuppiriya Sriskandarajah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Using political demonstrations as sites of analysis, this thesis explores popular understandings of diasporic identities within a Canadian multiculturalism framework and second generation Sri Lankan Tamil's (SLT) (re)negotiations of these constructions in forming and informing their identities. Through the use of critical discourse analysis and in-depth interviews I argue that popular constructions of diasporic identities and Canadian national identity as understood within a multiculturalism framework is not entirely in concurrence with diasporic minorities' identity constructions. The divergences that emerge amongst the discourses demonstrate a need for a more nuanced conceptualization of Canadian multiculturalism and citizenship which should incorporate the idea …

Neoliberal Governmentality, Corporate Responsibility, And The Governing Of Citizens In Nigeria: The Case Of Exxonmobil, Shell, And Chevron, Anna Zawada Jan 2010

Neoliberal Governmentality, Corporate Responsibility, And The Governing Of Citizens In Nigeria: The Case Of Exxonmobil, Shell, And Chevron, Anna Zawada

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates how oil corporations in Nigeria govern citizens through the implementation of certain corporate responsibility initiatives. The examination of ExxonMobil, Shell, and Chevron, and how each corporation governs individuals through various capacity-building initiatives will be discussed. From a governmentality perspective, this thesis examines how, under neoliberalism, private actors utilize certain governance ''techniques'' that render individuals to be responsible and self-sufficient. By focussing on the ''responsibilization'' of Nigerian citizens, the oil corporations have minimized their own responsibility to respect the environment, life-styles, forms of subsistence, and human rights of the population effected by their oil explorations. This thesis concludes …

Spectacular Sacrifice: Death In Images, Timothy Swiffen Jan 2010

Spectacular Sacrifice: Death In Images, Timothy Swiffen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The filmed beheading deaths that have proliferated on the Internet present an unusual set of phenomena in the west. The aim of my project is to analyze these videos in terms of their connections to the larger visual discourses of represented violence and death in western culture. It is my contention that a theoretical understanding of the significance of these videos can be achieved by examining the traditions of ritualized violence through an updating of the insights made by Guy Debord, Ren Girard and Georges Bataille. By examining the relationship between these digitally encoded deaths and the theories of spectacle, …

Global Climate Change And The Industrial Animal Agriculture Link: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Elizabeth Bristow Jan 2009

Global Climate Change And The Industrial Animal Agriculture Link: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Elizabeth Bristow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the discourses of a variety of stakeholders regarding global climate change (GCC), assessing if and how they construct industrial animal agriculture as a risk, and if and how these discourses may have shifted since the release of the Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) Livestock's Long Shadow report. Using Ulrich Beck's concepts of risk society, risk conflicts and relations of definition, this thesis examines how various animal rights and welfare groups, environmental organizations, meat industry stakeholders, governmental agencies and newspapers in Canada, the U.S. and internationally, investigate and construct industrial animal agriculture as a risk, if at all, …

The Role Of Zionism In Diasporic Jewish Education: On Education, Language And Community, Stephen Sheps Jan 2009

The Role Of Zionism In Diasporic Jewish Education: On Education, Language And Community, Stephen Sheps

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Zionism has become more than just a social movement; it has become a politicized ideological construct, an institution, an extension of Israeli politics and is commonly viewed as the unifying facet of what it means to be Jewish in the North American Diaspora. Within the Diaspora, there is an element of Zionism contained in Jewish educational resources that cannot go unnoticed. It is my belief that the methods of education used within these Diasporic communities impacts the way that Jews perceive themselves, each other and their relationship to the conflict in Israel/Palestine, reinforcing Zionist ideologies, beliefs, and a sense that …

The Social Situatedness Of Sexual Expression Among Youth In Rural Edo State, Nigeria, Jessica Barnett Jan 2009

The Social Situatedness Of Sexual Expression Among Youth In Rural Edo State, Nigeria, Jessica Barnett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research, utilizing data gathered among adolescent students living in rural southern Nigeria (Edo State), elucidates the youths' sexual understandings and their connections to HIV risk. I found that gender and age-related understandings acted as 'hubs' for the organization of the youths' sexual scripts. Overall, scripts that promote vulnerability to HIV include sex as controlled by the male, inherent in valued female/male relationships, a means to social status, and 'normally' violent. In addition, the youth do not view HIV as a present or preventable danger and view condoms as unreliable protection from disease that mainly work to disassociate oneself from …

Housing Responsibility And Advanced Liberal Government: Programs For The Homeless In Ontario, Silke Schaefer Jan 2009

Housing Responsibility And Advanced Liberal Government: Programs For The Homeless In Ontario, Silke Schaefer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the politics of homelessness in Ontario by examining two programs, the Consolidated Homelessness Prevention Program (CHPP) and the Hostels- to-Homes (H2H) program, that were created in 2006 and 2007 respectively by the Ministry of Community and Social Services. The CHPP program is designed at the local government level and provides funding and social services to the homeless and hard-to-house. The H2H program is a pilot project directed by the Ministry of Community and Social Services and uses a 'Housing-First' approach to get chronic shelter users into more permanent housing. From a governmentality perspective, this thesis examines how …

Ontario Domestic Violence Protection Act: An Analysis Of Discourse., April Girard Jan 2006

Ontario Domestic Violence Protection Act: An Analysis Of Discourse., April Girard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper explores different discourses in Ontario's Bill 117 (2000), An Act to Better Protect Victims of Domestic Violence. Through an examination of the Hansard transcripts this paper seeks to explore how feminist, men's rights and other actors, both state and non-state, collectively constructed the problem of domestic violence. I incorporate both feminist and Foucauldian insights focusing on how knowledge and power are deployed and produced within this discursive context. Using a combined content and discourse analysis research strategy, I identify seven important themes: everyone is responsible, protection and gender, rights and gender, funding and fairness, numerical and statistical truths, …

How Consumers Understand Private Security: The Case Of An Ontario Neighbourhood Security Program., Jeffrey G. Brown Jan 2006

How Consumers Understand Private Security: The Case Of An Ontario Neighbourhood Security Program., Jeffrey G. Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper deals with a contract security arrangement between a private firm and a group of residents of one public neighbourhood in an Ontario city. Using in-depth interviews with subscribers to the service, this is an exploratory study that analyzes the frequently neglected understandings of security consumers and the attributes of this new Canadian development in security provision. The results of this project highlight several themes, including disposable income, exclusivity, insecurity, responsibilization, and legality. These themes are used to demonstrate the claim that advanced liberalism relies on consumption, which is important for understanding how advanced liberal rule is put into …

Governing Female Sexuality: Prostitution, Problematic Associations And The Subcommittee On Solicitation Laws., Olga Marques Jan 2006

Governing Female Sexuality: Prostitution, Problematic Associations And The Subcommittee On Solicitation Laws., Olga Marques

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fuelled by the murder and disappearance of sex workers in British Columbia, the Subcommittee on Solicitation Laws (SSLR) was enacted to review current solicitation laws and recommend changes to ensure the safety of sex workers and the communities in which they work. Discourses of prostitution used by the SSLR were analyzed using governmentality literature (Rose, 1999) and Fairclough's (1992) social theory of discourse, to determine their continuity and variability from existing prostitution discourses, as well as their embodiment within the problematic of female sexuality. Although prostitution is not illegal in Canada, associations with crime, violence and public nuisance, serve to …

Perceptions Of Health And Environmental Contamination On The Aamjiwnaang First Nation Reserve (Ontario)., Kizzy Bedeau Jan 2006

Perceptions Of Health And Environmental Contamination On The Aamjiwnaang First Nation Reserve (Ontario)., Kizzy Bedeau

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research study explores how pollution from surrounding petro-chemical industry affects how aboriginal people on the Aamjiwnaang First Nation reserve construct their understandings of the land, the environment, and themselves as people. The residents are aware of the pollution around them, especially since tests of soil and water demonstrate high levels of toxic by-products of the industry. Traditionally, the self, land and spirituality formed coherent constructions of understanding the aboriginal self. Aboriginal people have a strong connection to their land and the environment as it forms part of their spirituality as well as relied upon for their modes of sustenance. …

The Nature And Impact Of Police/Mentoring Relationships On The Attitudes And Behaviours Of Youth., Cathy Knowler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of police mentoring relationships with youth on their attitudes and behaviours toward authority figures. The data was collected through a Case Study of the Essex Ontario Provincial Police Cop Camp. A random sample of 15 youths was studied. The participants were chosen by their teacher and their VIP officer because they showed some leadership potential but needed some discipline in that area. The counsellors of the camp were all O.P.P. officers who volunteered their time in order for the camp to be able to function. The participants of the camp …

Apparent Lesbian Performances, Heteroflexibility And Sexual Identity: Fluid Sexuality Among Young Women In Public Places., Allisa Scott Jan 2006

Apparent Lesbian Performances, Heteroflexibility And Sexual Identity: Fluid Sexuality Among Young Women In Public Places., Allisa Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Semi-structured interviews were used to document the experiences of fifteen young women between the ages of 18--31 who have engaged in "apparent lesbian performances". Apparent Lesbian behaviours occur when women engage in intimate behaviour with other women in public places. This study finds that women who engage in this behaviour may identify as lesbian, bisexual, or heterosexual. Their lesbian performativity is defined as "apparent" because it is characteristically not interpreted by the actors or their audience as the actions of "real" lesbians. Rather it is behaviour that has been encouraged and normalized by pop culture icons like Madonna and Britney …

The Governance Of Agriculture: Global Programs Of Development And Agricultural Biotechnology., Kelly Greenfield Jan 2005

The Governance Of Agriculture: Global Programs Of Development And Agricultural Biotechnology., Kelly Greenfield

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the name of progress and growth, the apparatus of development has formed a mode of global governance. This apparatus consists of development discourses and institutions and attempts to govern agriculture, pointing to the current effort underway to liberalize agriculture on a global scale. Farmers of the developing world are now subject to a regime of control that includes international institutions of governance, nation-state governments and multinational corporations. By examining the role of specialized agencies of the United Nations, specifically the FAO and UNESCO in the governance of agricultural practices, I focus on the implementation and management of agricultural biotechnology …

Ethno-Racial Groups And Income Attainment In Canada: Investigating The Mosaic., Tamara Rayvon Ferron Jan 2005

Ethno-Racial Groups And Income Attainment In Canada: Investigating The Mosaic., Tamara Rayvon Ferron

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper looks at income inequality, based on ethno-racial origins. While Canada is proclaimed to be largely egalitarian, in light of its liberal policies and ideologies such as liberalism and multiculturalism, this thesis examines the extent to which economic inequality, manifested in income attainment is present in Canada. Building on past research, which have identified links between ethno-racial origin and identity, it provides a snapshot of the socio-economic standing of different ethno-racial groups, speaking to a part of the everyday lived experiences of different people residing in Canada. Using cycle 14 of the General Social Survey and factors related to …

Campaigns Of Corporate Social Responsibility: The Case Of Canadian Oil Producer Encana (Ecuador)., David. Demant Jan 2005

Campaigns Of Corporate Social Responsibility: The Case Of Canadian Oil Producer Encana (Ecuador)., David. Demant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the increasingly legitimized neo-liberal climate, state governments have adopted policies that divest themselves of formalized regulation. This move towards the deregulation of corporate policy has created a unique climate in which the responsibility of minimizing risk and behaving in a responsible manner is left to market forces to regulate. Corporations claim to have subsequently adopted self-mandated policies of corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a means of expressing their commitment to moral concerns. The Case of Canadian oil producer EnCana illustrates that while the admirable moral policy may exist, actual practice does not. EnCana's negligent environmental and social behaviour in …

Ethno-Racial Groups And Occupational Attainment: Influence Of Human Capital And Social Capital., Koyel Ranu Jan 2005

Ethno-Racial Groups And Occupational Attainment: Influence Of Human Capital And Social Capital., Koyel Ranu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis using cycle 14 of the General Social Survey (2000) is to analyze the predictors of occupational attainment of ethno-racial groups in Canada, with a particular focus on the influence of human capital and social capital. Ethnic inequality has been the focus of a gamut of studies that have sought to identify the factors behind its existence. This thesis seeks to contribute to this range of literature by exploring whether occupational attainment is influenced by ethnic background alone or by general group characteristics such as human capital, social capital and immigrant status. Bivariate and multivariate analyses …

Examining The National Longitudinal Survey Of Children And Youth: A Profile Of Canadian Adolescent Sexuality., Rita Gillis Jan 2005

Examining The National Longitudinal Survey Of Children And Youth: A Profile Of Canadian Adolescent Sexuality., Rita Gillis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Adolescence is a period of development that is characterized by numerous biological, cognitive, and psychosocial changes. Throughout adolescence, individuals gradually abandon their identity as "children" and progressively begin to assume adult demeanor and conduct. In assuming adult roles, adolescents participate in behavior traditionally reserved for adults. This behaviour includes use of substances such as tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs, formation of intimate relationships, and engagement in sexual intercourse. The present investigation conceptualizes adolescent sexual activity as a learned behavior and uses indicators of learning through direct experience and observation from social learning theory to create a model for explaining sexual …

Governing At-A-Distance: Outsourcing, Network Prudentialism And Quality Assurance Standards., Dale Spencer Jan 2005

Governing At-A-Distance: Outsourcing, Network Prudentialism And Quality Assurance Standards., Dale Spencer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organizational research has entered into a network paradigm (Borgatti & Foster, 2003). Despite the proliferation of literature on networks, very little emphasis has been placed upon elucidating the ways in which networks are governed. This thesis moves to understand network governance within the context of the North American automotive industry. Within this industry, lead firms, specifically General Motors, Ford and Daimler-Chrysler, have outsourced a substantial portion of parts production. This thesis argues that in an aim to govern their supplier relations, North American lead firms' imposition of QS 9000 and now ISO/TS 16949 quality assurance standards upon their suppliers, is …

Guilty By Association: The Impact Of Mainstream Media Portrayal Of African Canadian Male Criminal Participation On The African Canadian Community., Phyllis A. Kumi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the effects of media produced constructions of Black masculinity and crime on Toronto's diverse African communities. Nineteen individuals, living in the areas of Downtown Toronto, Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough and East York, were interviewed about their experiences with the racialization of crime in the print and visual media. Interview discussions revolved around the welcome of immigrants of African descent, depictions of Black males, media coverage of crime according to the ethnicity of the assailant and victim and parental concerns of how their children are viewed by society. A second group of issues discussed is intra-group conflict and …

Strange Fruit: The Reification Of Race And The Myth Of Official Multiculturalism In Selected Canadian Media., Rawle G. Agard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the concept of 'race' and its place within the discourse of 'official multiculturalism' in the Canadian context. More specifically, I explore the ways that 'race' has been coded in the popular media in my examination of selected articles from the Toronto Star's coverage of: Philippe Rushton, human genome research, and racial profiling practiced by the Toronto Police Service. (Dis)Orderly Development In The North: Resistance And Rule In The Northern Boreal Initiative (Ontario), Steven Scott Richter Jan 2005

(Dis)Orderly Development In The North: Resistance And Rule In The Northern Boreal Initiative (Ontario), Steven Scott Richter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 2001 the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources released the Northern Boreal Initiative, outlining their plans to develop commercial forestry operations in the far northern regions of the province where many First Nations communities are located. The NBI emphasized an approach to land management known as 'community-based land use planning' or CBLUP, which stressed the importance of community led economic development. Drawing on concepts of appropriation, translation and alignment developed within the governmentality literature, I propose that such locally or regionally specific development projects can be viewed as sites where resistance and rule interact, resulting in novel configurations and organizations …

Abused Women's Perspectives On The Criminal Justice System's Response To Domestic Violence., Paula C. Barata Jan 2004

Abused Women's Perspectives On The Criminal Justice System's Response To Domestic Violence., Paula C. Barata

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the last five years a number of studies have been conducted that have given abused women voice in the discussion about whether or not the criminal justice system (CJS) can be helpful to them. These studies have used a variety of methods and examined different questions, but they have not considered how women's views of separate parts of the CJS come together in their perspectives about the system as a whole. The purpose of this study was to better understand battered women's views about the criminal justice system (CJS), and how those views are integrated into complex perspectives for …

Orphanhood, Informal Orphan Caregiving And The Impact Of Community-Based Organizations In The Context Of Hiv/Aids, In Nyanza, Kenya., Tamara M. M. Landry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the stressors the orphans and informal orphan caregivers were experiencing following the death of the orphans' parent(s), their coping strategies and the care and support provided by community based organizations (CBOs), in the context of HIV/AIDS in Nyanza, Kenya. This study was informed by conceptual realms within the Stress Process theory. Focus group discussions with orphans (thirty-one participants) and CBO members (16 participants) and in-depth interviews with informal orphan caregivers (4 participants) and CBO leaders (2 participants) were used in this study. This study makes a contribution to the stress process literature …

Postmodern Penality? Gps Electronic Monitoring And The New Penology., Ryan S. Cotter Jan 2004

Postmodern Penality? Gps Electronic Monitoring And The New Penology., Ryan S. Cotter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within the latter half of the 20th century, contemporary academics have noted a significant reorientation of criminal justice policy and practice. Explanations for this reorientation have been explained by: the emergence of a postmodern penality (Feeley and Simon, 1992); the limits of the sovereign state and the culture of high crime societies (Garland, 1996, 2000); and the imposition of 'New Right' politics (O'Malley, 1999). This thesis specifically examines Feeley and Simon's proposition that a postmodern penality has emerged. It is argued that rather than a replacement of the old penology with a new penology paradigm, contemporary practices are more characteristic …

Mapping The Lines: An Exploration Of Mobility And Urban Spaces Amongst Bicycle Couriers., Philip J. Boyle Jan 2004

Mapping The Lines: An Exploration Of Mobility And Urban Spaces Amongst Bicycle Couriers., Philip J. Boyle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent perspectives in social theory have highlighted the need for space to be understood as active in the patterning of social life. In this thesis, I consider how space in related to the patterning of corporeal mobility in cities by drawing upon interviews conducted with bicycle couriers. I show how space and mobility are articulated towards one another through the anticipatory interface of the cognitive map. The interviews also suggest that in addition to anticipation, mobility is also largely creative and circumstantial. The popular interpretation of such creativity as resistance to a spatial structure is specifically rejected in favor of …

Identifying Factors Of Stigma Influencing The Reintegration Of Ex-Inmates As Law-Abiding Citizens., Richard Phillips Jan 2004

Identifying Factors Of Stigma Influencing The Reintegration Of Ex-Inmates As Law-Abiding Citizens., Richard Phillips

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The thesis examines ex-inmates' self-report accounts of their experience with reintegration. In order to arrive at an understanding of this social stage, the labelling approach is used as a broad theoretical framework to develop a typology for understanding the different ways in which stigma is experienced and managed by ex-inmates with different criminal histories and life situations. While the study recognizes the social barriers to reintegration and the problems that every ex-inmate experiences because of social stigma, an important facet of this work is to understand that there are distinct personal, criminal, institutional, and social patterns of the stigma experience …

Influential Factors In Physically Active Leisure For International Students At The University Of Windsor: A Qualitative Study (Ontario)., Bert Meulders

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this exploratory study was to gain deeper insight into different factors for international students at the University of Windsor that influence involvement in and enjoyment of physical activity programs organized by Campus Recreation Services. The main source of data for this qualitative study were 12 semi-structured interviews with six male and six female international students from the University of Windsor, who represented a variety of cultural backgrounds. Three groups of four students were selected based upon their involvement in Campus Recreation Sport Programs during the Winter term of 2004: no involvement, involvement in recreational classes, and involvement …
