Taub Numbers., Mark G. Naber Jan 1993

Taub Numbers., Mark G. Naber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Taub numbers are studied as a set of tensorial conservation laws derivable from curves of solutions to the vacuum Einstein equations. A formulation for Taub numbers of all orders is provided as well as a derivation of the Xanthopoulos theorem. Taub numbers are computed for the Schwarzschild and Kerr solutions viewed as perturbations of Minkowski spacetime and the Schwarzschild solution. They are found to give a measure of the mass and angular momentum and are free of the factor of 2 anomaly associated with the Komar numbers. Taub numbers are also computed for the stationary perturbations of the Schwarzschild solution.Dept. …

Taking The Wheel: Selected Aspects Of Windsor's Automotive Working Experience, 1920-1938 (Ontario)., Mark Christopher. Sajatovich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While historians have offered in-depth studies of the growth and development of Canadian unions in the post World War II era, the history of the automative workers during the inter-war years has remained relatively unexplored. This thesis is composed of six chapters, each one examining a major aspect of life for Windsor's automotive workers during this period. In addition to an examination of the worker within the context of the automotive factor, this paper attempts to illustrate the relationships which existed between the worker, the automotive company and his/her family. These experiences and roles of Windsor's automotive workers have not …

The Absence Of Aristotelian Teleology In Some Modern European Philosophers Of Nature., Darko. Piknjac Jan 1993

The Absence Of Aristotelian Teleology In Some Modern European Philosophers Of Nature., Darko. Piknjac

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Beginning with Aristotle, many philosophers have for centuries thought it important to consider the ends to which things, whether living or non-living, tend by nature. These ends have come to be known as final causes of things. But in the early decades of the seventeenth century we find some philosophers who think it undesirable to consider final causes in physics. Two such philosophers are Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes. In order to find out why they are of this opinion, we will consider and critically evaluate the reasons they give for maintaining their position. Before we do, however, it is …

The Characterization And Chemistry Of {\It Mono\/}- And {\It Bis\/}-Cyclopentadienyl Titanium Thiolates., Todd Timothy. Nadasdi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The reactions of Cp$\rm\sb2TiCl\sb2$ with the dithiols, HS(CH$\sb2)\sb{\rm n}$SH (n = 2, 3) in the presence of imidazole proceed with formation of imidazole$\cdot$HCl affording relatively insoluble titanocene dithiolate derivatives 2.1 and 2.2 respectively. Alternatively, 2.2 can be prepared by the reaction of Cp$\rm\sb2TiPh\sb2$ with dithiol. The spectroscopic and analytical data are consistent with the formulation of 2.1 and 2.2 as the bimetallic compounds Cp$\rm\sb2Ti(\mu$-S(CH$\sb2)\sb{\rm n}\rm S)\sb2TiCp\sb2$ (n = 2 2.1, n = 3 2.2). The time between the warning stimulus and the imperative stimulus (the Preparatory Interval (PI)) is either constant (in the Regular Procedure) or variable (in the Irregular Procedure). Two studies were conducted examining the performance of brain damaged subjects on Shakow's procedure. The subjects in …

Relative Habituation And Recovery Of Visual Attention To Orientation-Movement Compounds By Newborn Infants., David P. Laplante Jan 1993

Relative Habituation And Recovery Of Visual Attention To Orientation-Movement Compounds By Newborn Infants., David P. Laplante

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has demonstrated that newborn infants are capable of discriminating stationary objects based on one stimulus dimension. The present study asked the following questions: can newborns process spatial orientation changes?; does stimulus movement influence spatial orientation processing?; can stimulus movement changes be processed?; and can changes to two dimensions of a stimulus be detected? Forty-eight, 2-day-old newborns were administered successive presentations of either stationary or moving, high contrast, black-and-white square wave gratings (stripes) and their level of visual fixation was recorded. The results indicated that newborns are capable of detecting spatial orientation changes in stationary and moving stimuli. Moreover, …

Sex Differences In Perceptions Of Dangerous Sexual Behaviours: The Case Of Acquaintance Rape., Jodee M. Mccaw Jan 1993

Sex Differences In Perceptions Of Dangerous Sexual Behaviours: The Case Of Acquaintance Rape., Jodee M. Mccaw

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research in the area of coercive heterosexual sex has assumed that the shocking frequency of men's sexual coercion of women is due in part to misunderstandings and miscommunication between women and men, so that a woman may experience as coercive a sexual interaction which the man believes to be consensual. The present study was designed to investigate sex differences in perceptions of and communication during sexual encounters. Forty university undergraduates, 20 women and 20 men, were asked about their own experiences with coercive sex and then wrote stories based on an outline in which a woman and a man who …

The Merrill-Palmer Motherhood and Home Training School was founded in 1919. It operated independently until the 1970's, when it was absorbed by Wayne State University. Lizzie Merrill-Palmer founded the School with the intention of providing homemaking training to young girls, but over the years the School expanded its services. In my thesis I will focus on the Merrill-Palmer staff and their clients from 1920 to 1970. Through the years, the social workers and the clients both tried to achieve some measure of control or power in their relationship. This interaction was significantly influenced by the factors of race, class, and …

Static And Dynamic Responses Of Prestressed Concrete Beams With Openings., Hany Ahmed Aly. Abdalla Jan 1993

Static And Dynamic Responses Of Prestressed Concrete Beams With Openings., Hany Ahmed Aly. Abdalla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Web openings in beams occur quite often in practice to provide convenient passage of environmental services. As a result, storey heights in buildings can be reduced resulting in major cost savings. Some openings generally give rise to excessive deflections and stresses which have to be taken into consideration. In this research, a theoretical and experimental study is carried out to determine the influence of openings on the static and dynamic responses of prestressed concrete beams. The effect of openings on the behaviour of such beams at different stages of loading--transfer stage, working stage, and ultimate stage--as well as under excitation …

Structure Editors And Attribute Grammar Programming., Farook A. Wadia Jan 1993

Structure Editors And Attribute Grammar Programming., Farook A. Wadia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Attribute grammars provide a formal and yet intuitive way of specifying the static semantics of programming languages, but their use is not limited to compiler generation systems. Attribute grammars have been successfully used to provide solutions to problems from areas such as natural language processing, SQL processors, and circuit design transformers within a VLSI package (25). One of the major advantages of using attribute grammar as a programming paradigm is the modular and declarative structure that results. Also, programs written as executable specification of attribute grammars are easy to debug because they mirror the structure of the input data. W/AGE …

The Purity Of Kant's Ethics In Light Of His Doctrine Of The Summum Bonum., Sandra. Orsini Jan 1993

The Purity Of Kant's Ethics In Light Of His Doctrine Of The Summum Bonum., Sandra. Orsini

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Immanuel Kant demands a "pure" ethics. The moral law is based, "not in the nature of man, nor in the circumstances of the world in which man is placed, but"a priori solely in the concepts of reason." The incentive to moral action ought to be reverence for the law itself; yet Kant introduces the concept of the summum bonum as a necessary extension of morality. This concept originates from the demands of practical reason which seeks not only virtue for its own sake, but also seeks the reward of future happiness in proportion to worth. Several critics have charged Kant …

Performance Evaluation Of An Auction-Based Manufacturing Cell Using Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets., Qiong. Zhou Jan 1993

Performance Evaluation Of An Auction-Based Manufacturing Cell Using Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets., Qiong. Zhou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An auction-based manufacturing system is characterized by the fact that the central control computer is eliminated and all the system entities make decisions locally through the negotiation process. The performance evaluation of such manufacturing systems is a new research topic because the traditional OR scheduling and dispatching models usually assume the existence of a central controller, which is, however, removed from an auction-based system. This thesis deals with the modelling and analysis of an auction-based flexible manufacturing cell, in which multiple machining centres are organized in two stages and are capable of processing multiple part types. The Generalized Stochastic Petri …

The Effect Of Wittgenstein's Criticisms On Russell's Theory Of Knowledge., Raymond E. Boggs Jan 1993

The Effect Of Wittgenstein's Criticisms On Russell's Theory Of Knowledge., Raymond E. Boggs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has long been thought that criticisms that Ludwig Wittgenstein raised against Bertrand Russell's theory of knowledge manuscript caused irreparable damage to the arguments in the manuscript and forced Russell to abandon the project. Recent speculation on the precise nature of these criticisms and how exactly they undermine the manuscript has been used as evidence to support the claim that Wittgenstein forced Russell to give up the positions defended in the theory of knowledge manuscript. Regardless of the accuracy of the speculation on the nature of Wittgenstein's criticisms, the argument developed in this thesis is that the effect of Wittgenstein's …

Fluid Inclusion Geochemistry And Rare Earth Element Distributions In The Oka Carbonatite, Quebec., Weining. Liu Jan 1993

Fluid Inclusion Geochemistry And Rare Earth Element Distributions In The Oka Carbonatite, Quebec., Weining. Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two types of primary, aqueous fluid inclusions are present in monticellite, apatite and calcite from the Oka carbonatite: (1) liquid-vapour (LV) inclusions, and (2) liquid-vapour-halite (LVH) inclusions. LV inclusions have salinities of 4.3 to 24.7 wt.% and densities of 0.75 to 1.04 g/cm$\sp3,$ and homogenize to the liquid phase between 95 and 435$\sp\circ$C. The observed crystallization sequence of the host minerals was monticellite-apatite-calcite. Systematic variation in homogenization temperatures, salinities and densities of LV inclusions, combined with the crystallization sequence, suggests that type 1 fluids evolved from high to low salinity and probably from high to low temperature. The minimum pressure …

In addition the relationship between tool tip …

A Feature Recognition Algorithm For Polyhedral Parts., Yuan. Li Jan 1993

A Feature Recognition Algorithm For Polyhedral Parts., Yuan. Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Currently, parts designed via CAD are defined and stored as geometric and topologic solids. The descriptions of these parts exist in terms of low-level information such as faces, edges and vertices or primitive volumes that are unrelated to manufacturing. Consequently, CAM is not able to make full use of the CAD-generated part description. To link between CAD and CAM, automatic interpretation of part description is very important. It involves a re-interpretation of the part description to extract manufacturing-specific semantic knowledge about the part. This knowledge can then enable the process planning and other CAM operations to proceed without human intervention. …

An Analysis Of The Efficiency Of Intercultural Communication In Colonial India: A Test Of Sarbaugh's Homogeneity-Heterogeneity Schema (L. E. Sarbaugh)., Anita Elizabeth. Ninan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this study was to test the homogeneity-heterogeneity taxonomy of intercultural communication developed by L. E. Sarbaugh. This taxonomy suggests that the homogeneity of participants on the variables of World View, Code Systems, Knowing and Accepting and Perceived Relation and Intent in a communication interaction contributes to successful communication. The taxonomy also seeks to predict communication efficiency based on the extent of homogeneity-heterogeneity of the participants. To do so, dyads from The Raj Quartet were selected and their interactions were analyzed. It was found that Sarbaugh's schema held good for about forty percent of the cases. It was …
