At the end of each semi-structured interview, each participant was invited to perform a `song of identity' - …

The Influence Of Self-Presentational Efficacy On Men's Social Anxiety In The Weight Room, Karen Maini Jan 2010

The Influence Of Self-Presentational Efficacy On Men's Social Anxiety In The Weight Room, Karen Maini

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One barrier to exercise is the worry people have regarding their appearance while exercising (Leary, 1992). This self-presentational concern may lead to social anxiety (Treasure, Lox, & Lawton, 1998) and a decrease in or avoidance of exercise behaviour (Leary & Kowalski, 1995). Munroe-Chandler and Gammage (2008) found there are certain environmental characteristics that influence men's social anxiety in the weight room. Using these aspects, the study's purpose was to influence the social anxiety experienced by males in the weight room by manipulating their self-presentational efficacy. Although the high and low self-presentational efficacy groups did not differ on levels of self-presentational …

Spectacular Sacrifice: Death In Images, Timothy Swiffen Jan 2010

Spectacular Sacrifice: Death In Images, Timothy Swiffen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The filmed beheading deaths that have proliferated on the Internet present an unusual set of phenomena in the west. The aim of my project is to analyze these videos in terms of their connections to the larger visual discourses of represented violence and death in western culture. It is my contention that a theoretical understanding of the significance of these videos can be achieved by examining the traditions of ritualized violence through an updating of the insights made by Guy Debord, Ren Girard and Georges Bataille. By examining the relationship between these digitally encoded deaths and the theories of spectacle, …

Generalized Inference In Linear Regression Models, Quazi Ibrahim Jan 2009

Generalized Inference In Linear Regression Models, Quazi Ibrahim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we consider inference problems in linear regression under both homoscedasticity and heteroscedasticity of the error noise. Namely, we construct generalized confidence regions and generalized confidence intervals for regression coefficients of linear regression models. Regressor variables are considered non-stochastic. Independent normal errors with zero mean and constant or varying dispersion are considered. The regression data from two different regimes are considered. In testing the equality of the regression coefficients in the two regimes under heteroscedasticity, we develop the generalized pivotal quantities of their differences and the generalized p-values. Generalized methods of inference are especially useful in multiparameter cases …

Global Climate Change And The Industrial Animal Agriculture Link: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Elizabeth Bristow Jan 2009

Global Climate Change And The Industrial Animal Agriculture Link: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Elizabeth Bristow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the discourses of a variety of stakeholders regarding global climate change (GCC), assessing if and how they construct industrial animal agriculture as a risk, and if and how these discourses may have shifted since the release of the Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) Livestock's Long Shadow report. Using Ulrich Beck's concepts of risk society, risk conflicts and relations of definition, this thesis examines how various animal rights and welfare groups, environmental organizations, meat industry stakeholders, governmental agencies and newspapers in Canada, the U.S. and internationally, investigate and construct industrial animal agriculture as a risk, if at all, …

Toxoplasma Gondii Differentiation: Effects Of Modifying Lactate Dehydrogenase And Argonaute Expression Patterns, Urszula Liwak Jan 2009

Toxoplasma Gondii Differentiation: Effects Of Modifying Lactate Dehydrogenase And Argonaute Expression Patterns, Urszula Liwak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Conversion between two growth stages, tachyzoites and bradyzoites, plays a key role in the pathogenesis of Toxoplasma gondii. Current studies aimed to elucidate the roles of lactate dehydrogenase (TgLDH) and argonaute (TgAgo) in relation to conversion. The over-expression of TgLDH1 or TgLDH2 did not change the overall enzymatic activity or increase growth of tachyzoites. However, a significant in vitro differentiation into bradyzoites was detected. These findings suggest that TgLDH1 and TgLDH2 have important physiological functions, in addition to being glycolytic enzymes and differentiation markers. Furthermore, altered TgAgo expression increased bradyzoite formation and interfered with the parasite’s ability to successfully perform …

Effects Of Forward Lunge Training On Balance Control In Elderly Women, Leigh Bloomfield Jan 2009

Effects Of Forward Lunge Training On Balance Control In Elderly Women, Leigh Bloomfield

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Falls among the elderly are a common event and can lead to serious injury. Many studies have linked medial-lateral instability with increased fall risk. The current study aims to answer the following questions:Does lunge training with elderly women improve balance control during the lunge?Does lunge training result in better performance during other balance tasks? Nineteen elderly women were assigned to a 6 week lunge training group or a control group. Balance was assessed and lunges were recorded using a motion analysis system at 0,3and6 weeks. Following training, individuals in the exercise group performed lunges with lower forward trunk velocities F(2,34)=4.13,p<0.025, lower forward pelvis velocities F(2,34)=5.26,p<0.01, lower medial-lateral trunk velocities F(2,34)=6.6,p<0.004 and shorter step lengths F(2,34)=4.83,p<0.016 compared to their controlled counterparts. The use of the forward lunge as the sole training tool with elderly women can improve medial-lateral trunk stability during a lunge by decreasing peak medial-lateral trunk velocity in only six weeks.

Pioneers Of Flight: An Analysis Of Gender Issues In United States Civilian (Sport) And Commercial Aviation 1920-1940, Bieke Gils

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The 1920s and '30s have been identified as the 'golden age' for women who aspired to a career in the United States aviation industry. Despite their limited role in World War I, women pilots became significantly involved and highly visible in United States civilian (sport) and commercial aviation between 1920 and 1940. In contrast, by 1940 women pilots were excluded from the next stage of aviation development - that of passenger transportation. This study sheds light on the ways in which American women pilots during this period negotiated gender issues. Drawing on feminist standpoint theory, the researcher employs a critical …

Seismic Analysis Of Rehabilitated Buried Segmented Pipes Using Cipp Trenchless Technology, Sami Jasem

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The recent developments of analytical and experimental tests for underground pipelines rehabilitation are presented. The finite element simulation results appear to give reasonable estimates for encased liner buckling pressure tests. This work shows that further analytical, field, and/or laboratory studies and finite element analyses are required. This work also describes the numerical modeling of the axial compression and bending behaviours of segmented pipe joints using the finite element method. The results of published full-scale tests by others (Bouabid, 1993 and Singhal, 1984) of unrestrained joints for typical rigid pipes were used to validate and calibrate the finite element models. The …

Suburban Nation: An Investigation Of Suburban Ideology And Youth Culture, Sara Hines Jan 2009

Suburban Nation: An Investigation Of Suburban Ideology And Youth Culture, Sara Hines

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This written document is a supplementary accompaniment to the thesis production entitled Suburban Nation. This documentary film (and the written component) explores the ways in which scholars and cultural observers have addressed the historical development of suburban spaces in North America and how those spaces are experienced by residents - particularly youth - in the Canadian context. While the suburb has often been depicted as something that is either wholly good or wholly bad, this work seeks to complicate such understandings by examining some of the contradictory ways in which suburbia is experienced and interpreted by adults and youths.

Examining The Relationship Between Imagery Use And Mental Toughness, Paige Mattie Jan 2009

Examining The Relationship Between Imagery Use And Mental Toughness, Paige Mattie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The motivational functions of imagery include images of feeling confident, in control, and mentally tough (Hall et al., 1998). Despite the important contribution of mental toughness to athletic performance (Jones et al., 2007), little quantitative research has been devoted to examining this construct, or to developing strategies to enhance or maintain mental toughness. The present study investigated the relationship between imagery use and mental toughness. Participants included 151 varsity athletes (Mage = 20.70 ▒ 1.84). Imagery use was assessed using the Sport Imagery Questionnaire (Hall et al., 1998) and mental toughness with the Mental Toughness 48 Inventory (Clough et al., …

The Impact Of Questionnaire Design On Response Times And Responses To Questions, Marc Frey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past, it has been noted that minor changes in questionnaire design can influence the responses submitted (Jackson, Ing, & Arseneault, 2007). This study looked to evaluate whether variations in item wording or response scale characteristics would influence the way individuals cognitively process and respond to questionnaires. To facilitate this a 3x2x2x2 randomized by repeated measure experimental design was implemented, where scale characteristics and item wording were manipulated. Multiple Analysis of Variance tests were conducted, and it was noted that variations in scale characteristics and item wording resulted in differences in cognitive processing as well as the responses submitted. …

The Social Construction Of Physical Activity/Christianity Relationships At Christian Summer Camps, Jared Ginter Jan 2008

The Social Construction Of Physical Activity/Christianity Relationships At Christian Summer Camps, Jared Ginter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I explored, through participant observation, interviews and document analysis, how a relationship between physical activity and Christianity is socially constructed through the leadership at a Christian summer camp. Ontario Pioneer Camp (OPC), through its Leaders In Training (LIT) program, placed a strong focus on physical activity in 'creation' as a connection between physical activity and Christianity. Some of the more experienced leaders had a well thought out understanding of additional connections between physical activity and Christianity; however, they did not formally teach them. The leaders at LIT and Adventure Camp identified that having good leaders was the …

Recreation Policies And Programs For New Immigrants To Canada, Matias Ignacio Golob Jan 2008

Recreation Policies And Programs For New Immigrants To Canada, Matias Ignacio Golob

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I explored, through document analysis and interviews, how community recreation leaders can create supportive environments for participation and address barriers that negatively impact participation in leisure based physical activity among recent immigrant adults. The document analysis revealed opportunities for ethno-cultural recreation practices may be constrained by dominant values and norms entrenched in government policies and documents. Absent from the recreation policies were recommendations to preserve and enhance the multicultural heritage of Canadians. Interviews with municipal recreation administrators indicated fiscal restraints challenge municipal recreation from attending to the specific needs and interests of ethnic minority immigrants in the …

Functional Characterization Of The Interaction Between Heat Shock Protein 70 And The Human Dual-Specificity Phosphatase Yvh1, Eliseos John Mucaki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

YVH1 (DUSP12) is a highly conserved atypical dual-specificity phosphatase. Yeast deletion studies have suggested YVH1 plays a role in cell growth. However, the physiological role of the human orthologue is unknown. Our lab has determined that hYVH1 interacts with HSP70, a heat shock protein that plays a cell survival role. The focus of this study was to further characterize this interaction, and attempt to determine its functional significance. Results determined that this interaction is mediated through the ATPase domain of HSP70 and requires the zinc binding domain of hYVH1. Moreover, hYVH1 was found to be uncompetitively inhibited by ATP. Functional …

The Islamic Economic Option (Ieo) And The Challenge Of Faith To The New World Order., Crystal A. Ennis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Islam is an ever-present reality in the political, economic and social life throughout the Arab-Islamic world. In this region, there exists a pervasive notion that Islam should be an integral part of all economic and political aspects of the state. At present, many nations across the Arab-Islamic world face political and economic instability and uncertainty. Since the legitimacy of many regimes in the region is consistently called into question, and since Islamic movements and political parties often form the strongest opposition, the emergence of an Islamic government is a strong possibility. Overall, the purpose of this thesis is to examine …

Millennialism And Violence., Herbert Simms Jan 2005

Millennialism And Violence., Herbert Simms

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Religious and secular millenarianism have had a significant impact on the development of many different polities. In both its forms, millenarianism has both positive and negative impacts. It can provide a community with a strong motivation to work together while it promotes group cohesion, and serves as a mechanism of community development. At the same time, it can develop into authoritarianism and totalitarianism. This thesis examines millenarian belief structures' impact on politics and asks several questions. What impact has millenarian belief structures had on the development of the American political culture? Are secular or religious groups more prone to exhibiting …

The purpose of this thesis is to understand the quantum vacuum in curved space-time by comparing the phenomenon of Hawking radiation with the Casimir effect. I begin with an exposition on the semiclassical approximation, as yet our best framework for understanding the curved vacuum, with additional preliminaries regarding the nature of particles and vacua in general. I discuss the Schwarzschild black hole, and derive the Hawking particle flux. Hawking radiation is viewed as a kinematical effect, which I compare to the case of mirrors moving in flat space-time. I move on to the Casimir effect: I discuss the classic case …

Campaigns Of Corporate Social Responsibility: The Case Of Canadian Oil Producer Encana (Ecuador)., David. Demant Jan 2005

Campaigns Of Corporate Social Responsibility: The Case Of Canadian Oil Producer Encana (Ecuador)., David. Demant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the increasingly legitimized neo-liberal climate, state governments have adopted policies that divest themselves of formalized regulation. This move towards the deregulation of corporate policy has created a unique climate in which the responsibility of minimizing risk and behaving in a responsible manner is left to market forces to regulate. Corporations claim to have subsequently adopted self-mandated policies of corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a means of expressing their commitment to moral concerns. The Case of Canadian oil producer EnCana illustrates that while the admirable moral policy may exist, actual practice does not. EnCana's negligent environmental and social behaviour in …

Examining The National Longitudinal Survey Of Children And Youth: A Profile Of Canadian Adolescent Sexuality., Rita Gillis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Adolescence is a period of development that is characterized by numerous biological, cognitive, and psychosocial changes. Throughout adolescence, individuals gradually abandon their identity as "children" and progressively begin to assume adult demeanor and conduct. In assuming adult roles, adolescents participate in behavior traditionally reserved for adults. This behaviour includes use of substances such as tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs, formation of intimate relationships, and engagement in sexual intercourse. The present investigation conceptualizes adolescent sexual activity as a learned behavior and uses indicators of learning through direct experience and observation from social learning theory to create a model for explaining sexual …
