Authentic Leadership Associations With Team Cohesion And Athlete Satisfaction: Examining The Relative Effects Of Coach And Athlete Leadership, Kyle Bezaire

The purpose of the present study was twofold. The first purpose was to determine if youth sport athletes perceived their head coaches and athlete leaders to differ in their frequency of use of authentic leadership behaviours. The second purpose was to determine which authentic leadership behaviours for each group were related to the outcomes of cohesion and athlete satisfaction. The sample comprised 119 competitive youth sport athletes. Results indicated that head coaches and athlete leaders both displayed all four authentic leadership behaviours (self-awareness, relational transparency, internalized moral perspective, and balanced processing of information), with head coaches displaying all four behaviours …

The frequency and the effectiveness of leadership behaviours have been used interchangeably by researchers using the Leadership Scale for Sports (LSS; Chelladurai & Saleh, 1980) and/or Differentiated Transformational Leadership Inventory (DTLI; Callow, Smith, Hardy, Arthur, & Hardy, 2009). The primary purpose of the present study was to determine if athletes perceive differences between the frequency and effectiveness of athlete leadership behaviours. The secondary purpose was to examine the relationships between the frequency and the effectiveness of athlete leadership behaviours, cohesion, and athlete satisfaction. The sample was 80 intercollegiate varsity athletes (34 females, 46 males) from the University of Windsor. The …
