Optimizing Power, Delay And Reliability For Digital Logic Circuits With Cmos And Single-Electron Technologies., Jialin Mi Jan 2006

Optimizing Power, Delay And Reliability For Digital Logic Circuits With Cmos And Single-Electron Technologies., Jialin Mi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we present two low power approaches with consideration of delay and/or reliability. The first approach is based on CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) technology. Given a gate level topology of digital circuits and a target library, we propose a greedy algorithm for delay budgeting in order to optimize power dissipation. The algorithm is implemented with JAVA SDK. The developed software tool estimates how much power dissipation (percentage) can be saved without increasing the circuit delay, and the potential of power savings by relaxing the circuit's timing constraints. The second low power approach is proposed with SET (Single Electron …

Velocity-Pressure Coupling In Finite Difference Formulations For The Navier-Stokes Equations, Bashar Zogheib Jan 2006

Velocity-Pressure Coupling In Finite Difference Formulations For The Navier-Stokes Equations, Bashar Zogheib

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A new numerical algorithm for solving the two-dimensional, steady, incompressible, laminar, viscous flow equations on a staggered grid is presented in this thesis. The proposed methodology is finite difference based, but essentially takes advantage of the best features of two well-established numerical formulations, the finite difference and finite volume methods. Some weaknesses of the finite difference approach are removed by exploiting the strengths of the finite volume method. In particular, the issue of velocity-pressure coupling is dealt with in the proposed finite difference formulation by developing a new pressure correction equation in a manner similar to the SIMPLE (Semi-Implicit Method …

Using X+V To Construct A Non-Proprietary Speech Browser For A Public-Domain Speechweb, Xiaoli Ma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A SpeechWeb is a collection of hyperlinked speech applications that are distributed over the Internet. Users access the speech applications through remote browsers, which accept human-voice-input and return synthesized-voice-output. In previous research, a new architecture (LRRP) has been proposed, which is ideally suited for building a Public-Domain SpeechWeb. However, a non-proprietary speech browser is needed for this architecture. In this thesis, we have solved several limitations of X+V, a programming language for developing Multimodal applications, and we have used X+V to build a viable Public-Domain SpeechWeb browser. Our browser has the following properties: real-time human-machine speech interaction; ease of installation …

Studying The Anti-Cancer Potential Of The Natural Compound Pancratistatin., Amanda Mclachlan-Burgess

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the current challenges in the fight against cancer is to find anti-cancer treatments that specifically target cancerous cells, while leaving normal cells unharmed. Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a non-traumatic, physiological process by which cells that are no longer needed or are potentially harmful can be removed from the system. Recently, anti-cancer research has focused on targeting the components of biochemical pathways that can induce apoptosis specifically in cancerous cells. The search for cancer-specific drugs has led some researchers to investigate the potential anti-cancer activity of natural compounds. Pancratistatin (PST) is a natural compound that was isolated …

Finite Element Modeling Of Dynamic Impact And Cornering Fatigue Of Cast Aluminum And Forged Magnesium Road Wheels., Shixian (Robert) Shang Jan 2006

Finite Element Modeling Of Dynamic Impact And Cornering Fatigue Of Cast Aluminum And Forged Magnesium Road Wheels., Shixian (Robert) Shang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Numerical investigation of wheel dynamic impact and cornering fatigue performance is essential to shorten design time, enhance mechanical performance, and lower development cost. This dissertation focused on two objectives. First, finite element models of the dynamic impact test on a wheel and tire assembly were developed, which considered the material inhomogeneity of the wheel. The model complexity and resultant additional analysis time led to the development of a simplified approach for wheel impact testing without the tired. Comparison of the numerical predictions with the experimental measurements of wheel impact indicated that an approximate 20% reduction of the initial striker kinetic …

Blind Adaptive Equalization For Qam Signals: New Algorithms And Fpga Implementation., Kevin Banovic Jan 2006

Blind Adaptive Equalization For Qam Signals: New Algorithms And Fpga Implementation., Kevin Banovic

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Adaptive equalizers remove signal distortion attributed to intersymbol interference in band-limited channels. The tap coefficients of adaptive equalizers are time-varying and can be adapted using several methods. When these do not include the transmission of a training sequence, it is referred to as blind equalization. The radius-adjusted approach is a method to achieve blind equalizer tap adaptation based on the equalizer output radius for quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals. Static circular contours are defined around an estimated symbol in a QAM constellation, which create regions that correspond to fixed step sizes and weighting factors. The equalizer tap adjustment consists of …
