Retrieving Function Components From A Reuse Library., Qiuyan An Jan 1998

Retrieving Function Components From A Reuse Library., Qiuyan An

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increasing software development productivity is not enough to close the gap between the software demands in industry and software that can be provided in practice. Software reuse is claimed to be the only realistic approach to solve this problem [17]. As the reusable components are growing, we are faced the challenge of modulating, structuring and storing these components into reuse library so as to achieve faster and effective retrieval for reuse. In this thesis we investigate an approach of structuring a function library and an efficient type-based retrieval method based on this structured library. In searching for functions, the trivial …

Synthesis Of Multiplexor-Based Fpgas Using 123 Decision Diagrams., Anthony E. Armah Jan 1998

Synthesis Of Multiplexor-Based Fpgas Using 123 Decision Diagrams., Anthony E. Armah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are programmable devices that can be directly configured by the end user. Reduced Ordered Binary Decision Diagrams (ROBDD) have been used for the synthesis of multiplexor-based FPGAs. However, ROBDDs are extremely sensitive to variable ordering and require all branches to have the same ordering. In this thesis a new decision diagram based model, the 123 Decision Diagram (123DD), that relaxes some of the constraints of ROBDDs is used to synthesize multiplexor-based FPGAs. 123DD combines both the advantages of ROBDD and BDD. This thesis focused on the widely used ACTEL FPGAs with emphasis on the general ACT …

Automatic Robot Path Generation For Manufacturing On Sculptured Surfaces., Wenwei. Gong Jan 1998

Automatic Robot Path Generation For Manufacturing On Sculptured Surfaces., Wenwei. Gong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Robot path planning is an important task in modern manufacturing. Currently, many commercial systems are capable of automatically generating robot paths with collision detection and correction. However, few can deal with automatic robot path generation on free-form surfaces, which has many applications such as tool and die polishing, tool and die welding, and automotive body panel spray painting. This thesis presents a new prototype system for automatic robot path generation for manufacturing on free-form surfaces. The proposed system consists of three modules: surface data construction, automatic robot path generation, and robot path simulation. To validate the new system, several simulation …

Novel Approaches In Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction., Monique Elise. Verhaegen Jan 1998

Novel Approaches In Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction., Monique Elise. Verhaegen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Perhaps the most challenging current analytical problem associated with PCR is the determination of the starting quantity of target DNA. The objective of this research was to devise novel quantitative PCR assays for DNA and RNA which are automatable, highly sensitive and easily adaptable to the routine clinical chemistry laboratory. One project focused on the development of the first quantitative assay for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) mRNA based on co-amplification with a recombinant RNA internal standard (IS) and hybridization performed in microtiter wells. The PSA mRNA and the IS, differing only in a 24 bp centrally located sequence, contained the same …

Thermal Reactions Of Monocyclopentadienyl Titanium Thiolate Complexes., Andrea Victoria. Firth Jan 1998

Thermal Reactions Of Monocyclopentadienyl Titanium Thiolate Complexes., Andrea Victoria. Firth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The thiolate complexes, CpTi(OC6H3-2,6- i-Pr2)(SR)Cl (R = Et, t-Bu, CH2 Ph, Ph), were prepared. Reaction of CPTi(OC6H3-2,6- i-Pr2(Me)Cl with t butylthiol in the presence of base afforded the species CpTi(OC6H3-2,6- i-Pr2(Me)(SCMe3). The analogous species CPTi(OC 6H3-2,6-i-Pr2) (Me) (SCH2Me) is unstable, liberating methane and yielding the dimeric product of C-H bond activation, [CpTi(OC6H3-2,6- i-Pr2)(m-SCHMe)]2. In a related thermolysis of CpTi(OC6H3-2,6-i-Pr2)(SBn) 2, the dimer species [CpTi(m-S)(OC6H3-2,6- i-Pr2)]2 and (PhCH2)2S are obtained. Kinetic studies of the C-S bond thermolysis reaction are consistent with an intramolecular process proceeding via a terminal sulphide intermediate and rapid dimerization (k = 2.8 x 10-6 s -1). The …

Mrt: Is It Effective In Decreasing Recidivism Rates With Young Offenders?, Tammy Deschamps Jan 1998

Mrt: Is It Effective In Decreasing Recidivism Rates With Young Offenders?, Tammy Deschamps

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Moral Reconation Therapy Program is a rehabilitative program presently in use at New Beginnings of Essex County; a phase II open custody facility in Windsor, Ontario. This study examined the effects o f the MRT program on recidivism rates. The MRT program, a cognitive behavioural approach, was examined from the perspective o f the social control framework developed by Travis Hirschi. It was hypothesized that MRT would have little effect on recidivism rates because it does not adequately address the social control bonds ( attachment, commitment, involvement and belief in the moral order) discussed by Hirschi. The records o …

Neuropsychological And Socioemotional Sequelae Of Infantile Hydrocephalus In Three Etiological Groups: A Developmental Perspective., Simone W. A. T. Kortstee Jan 1998

Neuropsychological And Socioemotional Sequelae Of Infantile Hydrocephalus In Three Etiological Groups: A Developmental Perspective., Simone W. A. T. Kortstee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, a group of 46 children, early shunted for hydrocephalus, were examined with regard to the development of their neuropsychological and socioemotional functioning. The purpose of this study was to test the model of Nonverbal Learning Disabilities (NLD; Rourke, 1989, 1995), by studying a clinical group of children with assumed early cerebral white matter damage or dysfunction. As the NLD model predicts a specific course of development, children of two age groups (5--8 yrs (n = 23) and 9--14 yrs (n = 23)) were included in the study. A second purpose of the study was to investigate the …

Noncausal Predictive Lattice Modeling For Image Compression., Raymond Chi Ho. Chan Jan 1998

Noncausal Predictive Lattice Modeling For Image Compression., Raymond Chi Ho. Chan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to investigate the lattice modeling technique on the application of image compression. Auto-Regressive (AR) modeling is a classical model for linear prediction. To obtain the model parameters based on the Least Square Error (LSE) criterion, lattice algorithms provide an efficient and robust approach. With prediction coding as the framework an accurate model or prediction can yield a better reduction in entropy or redundancy. As a result, coding on the less well correlated prediction residue will result in a compression. The characteristics of the prediction residue have also benefited the quantization process. For this purpose, …

Traditional Theodicy: Christian And Hindu Responses., F. Stefan Polewski Jan 1998

Traditional Theodicy: Christian And Hindu Responses., F. Stefan Polewski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper attempts to trace how evil has been understood in the traditions of Thomism, and Hinduism. The Thomist tradition (having its foundation in the Greek fathers of Plato and Aristotle), built on the thought of Augustine. A school of Christian thought that has been largely ignored (or overlooked), that clearly characterizes the Greek Fathers (as distinct from the Latin), is the Irenaean. It, however, was not carried beyond the "relatively inchoate beginnings" of the Church in the third to the fourth centuries. 1 This examination of the problem of evil and human suffering then turns to examine answers offered …

Gender And Equality In God's Army: An Examination Of Women's Public And Domestic Roles In The Salvation Army, British Origins To 1930., Andrew Mark Eason Jan 1998

Gender And Equality In God's Army: An Examination Of Women's Public And Domestic Roles In The Salvation Army, British Origins To 1930., Andrew Mark Eason

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the extent to which this egalitarian philosophy of ministry and leadership was operative in the concrete life of the Salvation Army in Britain between the 1870s and 1930. This work argues that Salvationists, including the Booths themselves, held Victorian and evangelical assumptions about gender and authority which were at odds with any widespread implementation of sexual equality within the movement. While women and men occasionally shared a preaching ministry, most Army tasks were assigned on the basis of gender rather than equality. Men assumed administrative and decision-making roles whereas women undertook responsibilities consistent with sacrificial service. Furthermore, …

Neuroradiological Correlates Of Neuropsychological Functioning In Multiple Sclerosis., Lisa Ann. Smith-Walker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The correlation between the pathological changes of multiple sclerosis and the subcortical dementia profile was investigated. The relationship of demyelination (as detected by T2-weighted and gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted MRI imaging), to both physical disability (as documented using the Expanded Disability Status Scale), and cognitive deterioration (as detected by neuropsychological assessment), was examined. Twelve individuals with early-stage relapsing-remitting MS underwent serial imaging, neurological examination, and neuropsychological assessment at both baseline and 6month follow-up. Results revealed mild deterioration in functioning with respect to all four aspects of the subcortical dementia profile (i.e., attention and information processing speed, memory, executive functioning, and affective disturbance). …

Paleomagnetism Of Mississippi Valley-Type Ores In Navan, Ireland, And Robb Lake, British Columbia, And Of Dolomitization In Southern British Columbia, Canada., Mark T. Smethurst

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The genesis of the Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) lead-zinc mineralization in the Tara Mine at Navan, Ireland and of the mineralization at Robb Lake in northeastern British Columbia has been disputed, in part because their ages are undefined. Timing of fluid flows in southeastern British Columbia is crucial to the understanding of the geologic evolution of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) and major ore bodies found within it. Paleomagnetism will be used to date the mineralization and dolomitization of the Navan and Robb Lake study areas and of the dolomitization in southeastern British Columbia. The Navan orebody is hosted in …

An Analysis Of Sport Managers' Interpersonal Communication Skills In Selected Ontario Amateur Sport Organizations., Jennifer Lyn. Graham Jan 1998

An Analysis Of Sport Managers' Interpersonal Communication Skills In Selected Ontario Amateur Sport Organizations., Jennifer Lyn. Graham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the dimensions which account for effective communication in order to clarify the domain of interpersonal communication. Real and ideal perceptions of superiors, managers, and subordinates were compared to determine if the views of others (superiors and subordinates) differed from self (manager) perceptions of desirable interpersonal communication skills. The Interpersonal Communication Inventory (ICI), was used to examine sport managers' interpersonal skills. This instrument was revised by adding an ideal perceptual domain, and by changing the wording to allow for both self and others' perspectives to be investigated. The key areas reported in previous interpersonal communication research were compared …

Relations Of Autonomy And Sociotropy To Eating Disturbances In Female University Students And Women With Eating Disorders., Karen Joan. Narduzzi Jan 1998

Relations Of Autonomy And Sociotropy To Eating Disturbances In Female University Students And Women With Eating Disorders., Karen Joan. Narduzzi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation assessed relations between personality factors and eating disordered attitudes and behaviours. Specifically, the study evaluated the degree of association between varying levels of eating disorders and the dimensions of Autonomy and Sociotropy, two personality traits suggested by past research to be linked with both depression and eating disorders. Autonomy measures a heightened focus on issues of self-definition and self-worth, whereas Sociotropy measures excessive investment in maintaining interpersonal relationships. This study utilized these measures, along with a projective test to evaluate a psychodynamic model of eating disorders. The model postulates that eating disturbances arise from an underlying anaclitic …

Lose/Lose: "The Windsor Star"'S Coverage Of Local Hospital Restructuring (Ontario)., Andrea. Neufeldt Jan 1998

Lose/Lose: "The Windsor Star"'S Coverage Of Local Hospital Restructuring (Ontario)., Andrea. Neufeldt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In particular, this is a case study of The Windsor Star's coverage of local hospital restructuring. In 1994, the local District Health Council (DHC) released its restructuring plan. The Win/Win model proposed closing two out of four local hospitals and the removal of 540 hospital jobs. To make up for the loss of service and jobs, the community sector was to be enhanced. At the time, the provincial NDP government agreed to the plan and promised funding for its implementation. A year and a half later, the Progressive Conservatives were elected and eventually reneged on the promised funding levels. As …

Mineralogy, Chemistry And Hydrothermal Evolution Of The Pea Ridge Iron-Oxide-Rare Earth Element Deposit, Missouri, United States Of America., Ian Douglas. Kerr Jan 1998

Mineralogy, Chemistry And Hydrothermal Evolution Of The Pea Ridge Iron-Oxide-Rare Earth Element Deposit, Missouri, United States Of America., Ian Douglas. Kerr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Pea Ridge Fe-oxide deposit is hosted by a sequence of 1.45--1.48 Ga rhyolite tuffs of the St. Francois terrane of S.E. Missouri. Mineralization comprises early actinolite-apatite-magnetite alteration and a magnetite-apatite orebody. Rare earth elements (REE) in these stages are concentrated in monazite inclusions within apatite. Hematite replaces magnetite around the margins of the orebody. Subsequent alteration of the host rhyolites resulted in the sequential deposition of quartz, andalusite, muscovite and K-feldspar, indicating that an acidic fluid at temperatures above 341°C increased in pH and decreased in temperature during alteration. Comparisons previously made with the Olympic Dam deposit are justified …

This study investigated the relationship between inservice teachers' beliefs about computers and their levels of computer use. Teacher beliefs were constructed from five measures: self-confidence, self-competence, perceived value of computers, computer experience, and perceived likelihood of using computers under differential access to computers, programs, and a computer-knowledgeable individual. Levels of computer use were subdivided into three areas for which computers would be used: personal, teaching, and student learning. The sample consisted of 80 inservice teachers enrolled in inservice courses offered at the University of Windsor. Data was gathered at the end of September and at the beginning of October in …

The Relationship Between Young Adult Suicidal Behavior And Difficulties Developing Intimacy, Problematic Family Relationships And Depression., Michael Edward Anthony. Oosterhoff Jan 1998

The Relationship Between Young Adult Suicidal Behavior And Difficulties Developing Intimacy, Problematic Family Relationships And Depression., Michael Edward Anthony. Oosterhoff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Suicidal Behavior is an increasingly common problem that occurs with young adults. While there has been considerable research in this area there has been little detailed examination of the relationship of suicidal behavior with the salient developmental issues of young adulthood. A primary developmental issue facing young adults is the establishment of intimacy in interpersonal relationships. The establishment of intimacy is necessarily relational in nature and therefore the patterns of intimate relating exposed to while growing up likely have a significant effect on the later success in developing intimacy with others. Of the patterns of intimate interpersonal relating exposed to …

The Role And Regulation Of Cathepsin B During Skeletal Muscle Cell Differentiation, Derek Thomas Jane Jan 1998

The Role And Regulation Of Cathepsin B During Skeletal Muscle Cell Differentiation, Derek Thomas Jane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The results reported in this dissertation provide evidence that the cysteine protease, cathepsin B, is one of the nonmuscle-specific genes expressed in a regulated manner during myogenesis. Unlike muscle-specific enzymes such as creatine phosphokinase (CPK), levels of cathepsin B activity are high in dividing, presumptive myoblasts. As these cells align in linear arrays in preparation for fusion, levels of cathepsin B activity drop dramatically and then increase in a fusion-related manner characteristic of muscle specific enzymes. This current studies appears to be the first to demonstrate a "down-up" pattern of cathepsin B activity over the entire differentiation process in vitro …

Vlsi Library Cells For Cellular Neural Network Applications., Anu. Mathew Jan 1998

Vlsi Library Cells For Cellular Neural Network Applications., Anu. Mathew

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cellular Neural Networks (CNNs) are massively parallel nonlinear locally connected analog cells; they are often targeted for use in image processing applications. An analog signal processor which (in majority of cases) does not require A/D conversion, occupies only a fraction of the area occupied by its digital counterpart. In image processing, it is possible to integrate an analog processor with each signal source (pixel) without leading to impractically low signal-source (or pixel) density. This makes possible the parallel loading or injecting of the input signal into the analog processor. Thus, sequential sampling at the output voltage (or current) of each …

The Icrc And Neutrality In Modern Civil And Ethnic Conflict (Red Cross)., Michelle Charmaine Smith Jan 1998

The Icrc And Neutrality In Modern Civil And Ethnic Conflict (Red Cross)., Michelle Charmaine Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Neutrality is the primary focus of the thesis, for it is a controversial and complex issue which the ICRC places at the heart of its mandate of humanitarian activity. The controversy surrounding neutrality is not new. Since its inception in 1864, the ICRC has met with criticism concerning its neutral mandate. There has been a general loss of respect for the ICRC neutrality, particularly in cases of civil conflict. ICRC workers are targeted and killed while carrying out their duties, and the neutrality of the Red Cross emblem is …
