The Social Construction Of Physical Activity/Christianity Relationships At Christian Summer Camps, Jared Ginter Jan 2008

The Social Construction Of Physical Activity/Christianity Relationships At Christian Summer Camps, Jared Ginter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I explored, through participant observation, interviews and document analysis, how a relationship between physical activity and Christianity is socially constructed through the leadership at a Christian summer camp. Ontario Pioneer Camp (OPC), through its Leaders In Training (LIT) program, placed a strong focus on physical activity in 'creation' as a connection between physical activity and Christianity. Some of the more experienced leaders had a well thought out understanding of additional connections between physical activity and Christianity; however, they did not formally teach them. The leaders at LIT and Adventure Camp identified that having good leaders was the …

Non-Violence In The Indian Religious Tradition, John Edward Andrew Foot Jan 1999

Non-Violence In The Indian Religious Tradition, John Edward Andrew Foot

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to trace the roots of non-violence from the Vedic Age, circa 3000 BCE to the present day. The emphasis is on the history and philosophy of the three main religions of India, Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. For the modern period significant stress will be placed on Mohandas Gandhi, the single most influential devotee of non-violence. An investigation of the early culture of India, reveals a group of people living in the Indus Valley as sophisticated and as aware of the world as any other civilization during the same time period. The collections of the …

A Comparison Of The Contentions Of The Value Of Existence In The Process Aesthetic Theory Of The Metaphysics Of Alfred North Whitehead And "The Plague" Of Albert Camus., Sarah J. Roebuck Jan 1998

A Comparison Of The Contentions Of The Value Of Existence In The Process Aesthetic Theory Of The Metaphysics Of Alfred North Whitehead And "The Plague" Of Albert Camus., Sarah J. Roebuck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis compares the contentions of the value of existence in the process aesthetic theory of the metaphysics of Alfred North Whitehead and The Plague of Albert Camus. One of the central tenets of the process aesthetic theory is that each experience contains aesthetic value. There are various levels of value achievement, depending on the choices of actual entities (the most basic units of reality). Beauty is the ideal value, and is the attainment of the aesthetic mean. Likewise, for Albert Camus, existence is valuable unto itself, and simply to live is to concede that existence is valuable. To rebel …

Gender And Equality In God's Army: An Examination Of Women's Public And Domestic Roles In The Salvation Army, British Origins To 1930., Andrew Mark Eason Jan 1998

Gender And Equality In God's Army: An Examination Of Women's Public And Domestic Roles In The Salvation Army, British Origins To 1930., Andrew Mark Eason

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the extent to which this egalitarian philosophy of ministry and leadership was operative in the concrete life of the Salvation Army in Britain between the 1870s and 1930. This work argues that Salvationists, including the Booths themselves, held Victorian and evangelical assumptions about gender and authority which were at odds with any widespread implementation of sexual equality within the movement. While women and men occasionally shared a preaching ministry, most Army tasks were assigned on the basis of gender rather than equality. Men assumed administrative and decision-making roles whereas women undertook responsibilities consistent with sacrificial service. Furthermore, …

The Jewish And Hellenistic Influences On Paul: A Case Study Of "Mysterion" (Saint Paul)., Christopher Gary Fraser Jan 1998

The Jewish And Hellenistic Influences On Paul: A Case Study Of "Mysterion" (Saint Paul)., Christopher Gary Fraser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines how the word mysterion ("mystery") in the Apostle Paul's writings was influenced by both Jewish and Hellenistic sources. The word mysterion occurs eight times, twice in Romans (11:25 and 16:25), and six times in 1 Corinthians (2:1, 7; 4:1; 13:2; 14:2; and 15:51). This study is divided into two parts. The first section (Part 1) uses an historical methodology to focus on the origin and development of the word mysterion. This section will look not only at the use of the word mysterion within the mystery cults, but also at the way it developed in other areas. …

The Great Goddess: Her Vestiges Uncovered In Three Patriarchal Religions (Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism)., Janette Orr Jan 1997

The Great Goddess: Her Vestiges Uncovered In Three Patriarchal Religions (Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism)., Janette Orr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Great Goddesses held real power in the Ancient World, whether in goddess-dominated religions or god-dominated religions, where the goddesses played subordinate roles. The feminine principle was always present, unlike in the three patriarchal religions under study: Judaism, Christianity and Buddhism. What happened to the Goddesses in these religions? The gods and male founders of these religions appropriated the Great Goddesses' powers of creating and sustaining life, and the Great Goddesses' powers over the process of death and renewal/regeneration/rebirth. They debased or subordinated the Goddesses' key symbols--the serpent, the tree, the earth, and the moon. By comparing goddess-dominant myths or …

The Biblical Book Of Ruth: A Feminist Literary Reading., Kaija Helena Anneli Ranta Jan 1995

The Biblical Book Of Ruth: A Feminist Literary Reading., Kaija Helena Anneli Ranta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The book of Ruth has been widely accepted as being a positive text for and about women in the Hebrew Bible. Frequently described as being 'delightful' or 'whimsical', it is regarded as a fine example of a short story with full and complete characters. Naomi's perseverance, Ruth's faithfulness, as well as the deity's providence are examples of this view. The book is seen as one of only a few remnants of women's experience recorded in the patriarchal book of the Hebrew Bible. Through careful re-reading, I revealed hidden complexities contained within this text. In the process, inconsistencies of the characters, …

The Right To Life And Death: What Do Presbyterians Say?, Mary Templer Jan 1993

The Right To Life And Death: What Do Presbyterians Say?, Mary Templer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the official positions of the Presbyterian Church in Canada on capital punishment, abortion and euthanasia, and the process the Church underwent to arrive at these positions. The theological and ethical principles upon which these positions are based are evaluated, and the work of the authors referred to by the Presbyterian Church in its research is discussed. Five ordained Presbyterian ministers and twelve lay Presbyterians were interviewed with a view to discovering their understanding of the Presbyterian Church's positions on capital punishment, abortion and euthanasia, their personal opinions and experiences of these issues, and their perceived role of …

Bereavement After Miscarriage: Implications For Pastoral Care., Catherine L. Mackendrick Jan 1990

Bereavement After Miscarriage: Implications For Pastoral Care., Catherine L. Mackendrick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the dilemma women experience when they have a miscarriage. The tension between their perception of its significance and the perception of those around them, create difficulties for them as they attempt to integrate the event into their life-pattern. The social and psychological setting for miscarriage, the dynamics of perinatal bereavement, and models of care are reviewed. The theological and philosophical background of dualistic attitudes towards women and their bodies is examined in the work of traditional and feminist theologians. An examination of the results of interviews with twenty women who had miscarried within the previous four years …

Dignity: The Organization (Homosexuals, Catholic)., Diane R. Pawlowski Jan 1990

Dignity: The Organization (Homosexuals, Catholic)., Diane R. Pawlowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines Dignity, a voluntary organization comprised of gay and lesbian Roman Catholics, and their friends. The research project asks how Dignity can survive in the face of hostility from the Church hierarchy. This opposition has been expressed by the 1986 Vatican document, "Letter to the Bishops of the World on the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons," and in the resulting expulsion of twenty-seven local Dignity chapters from their home parishes. Dignity's position on sexual ethics places it in opposition to traditional Church teaching. This study discusses Dignity's position on sexual ethics, examining Dignity documents and position papers, including …

Trimorphic Protennoia And The Wisdom Tradition: Protennoia And Sophia., Rosemary Halford Jan 1990

Trimorphic Protennoia And The Wisdom Tradition: Protennoia And Sophia., Rosemary Halford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Coptic writing Trimorphic Protennoia (Nag Hammadi Codex XIII, 1) has a complicated literary stratigraphy that must be respected to permit a coherent thematic analysis. The writing contains superficial Christianization, several Sethian cosmological and baptismal sections and an aretalogical base layer. A comparative analysis shows that the aretalogical material demonstrates great affinity with writings of the Hellenistic Jewish sapiential tradition. Non-canonical sapiential speculation demonstrates an increasingly sectarian attitude toward Sophia which led to her outright gnosticization, as attested by Trimorphic Protennoia. The many parallels among Jewish Sophia, Protennoia as a wisdom figure, and the johannine Jesus confirm that the Fourth …
