Excitation And Ionization Of 6li Ions Following Beta-Decay Of 6he., Eva Schulhoff Jan 2010

Excitation And Ionization Of 6li Ions Following Beta-Decay Of 6he., Eva Schulhoff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

6He beta-decays into 6Li causing an electronic rearrangement of the final 6Li atom. The calculations involve expanding the initial state of 6He in terms of a complete set of final states of 6Li. Correlated Hylleraas-like wave functions were used to create a pseudospectrum, which spans both the bound and continue states of 6Li. The sudden approximation with neglected recoil was used. Starting from the 1 1S1 and 2 3S1 initial configurations, the transitions to the final 6Li bound states, as well as the total probabilities of single and double ionization were calculated. The transition probabilities to bound states were compared …

Development Of A Coaxial Electron-Laser Beam Collision Experiment, Justin Teeuwen Jan 2010

Development Of A Coaxial Electron-Laser Beam Collision Experiment, Justin Teeuwen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An electron optical system which propagates an electron beam coaxially with a laser was designed, developed and tested. Greatly improved signal rates were obtained when excitation of various target species under electron impact was studied. Measurements of excitation in nitrogen, specifically the (0,0) second positive band of N2 and (0,1) first negative band of N2 are made and compared with well-known previous results to calibrate the system. Emission cross section measurements were made by direct excitation of a number of argon transitions, including the 3p5 4p [1 1/2] (J=1) -> 3p5 4s [1/2] (J=0) transition. Comparison with previous results showed …

Tests Of Cusp Conditions And Integral Recursion Relations For Helium Wave Functions., Levant Inci Jan 2004

Tests Of Cusp Conditions And Integral Recursion Relations For Helium Wave Functions., Levant Inci

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this work is to apply the Kato cusp conditions to Hylleraas type variational wave functions and to test the numerical stability of the integral recursion relations for helium and helium-like ions. The Kato cusp conditions are applied from helium (Z = 2) up to argon (Z = 18), then the exact cusp values are compared with the cusp values from two basis set and three basis set Hylleraas type wave functions. Integral recursion relations are calculated for different powers of r1, r2, and r 12 and also for different nonlinear parameters (alpha, beta).Dept. of Physics. Paper copy …

High Precision Theoretical Study Of The Hydrogen Ion., Mark Michael Cassar Jan 2004

High Precision Theoretical Study Of The Hydrogen Ion., Mark Michael Cassar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study of the hydrogen molecule-ion H+2 is presented. The purpose is to show that a carefully modified, doubled basis set in the standard Hylleraas coordinates provides an excellent, yet straightforward, description of this ion without recourse to approximation methods. Three non-linear parameters are used so that distance scales may be set independently for all three radial coordinates r 1, r2 and r12. Vibrational modes are effectively accounted for by including only high powers of the inter-proton coordinate r12. High precision variational calculations are carried out for the 1 1 S ground state, and the first two excited states---2 1S …

Hyperfine Structure For The Rydberg States Of Helium-3., Qixue. Wu Jan 2004

Hyperfine Structure For The Rydberg States Of Helium-3., Qixue. Wu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A comprehensive study is made of the hyperfine structure of the helium isotope 3He for all states up to n = 10 and L = 7. High precision values of the hyperfine structure parameters CSS', DS, and ESS' are calculated using the doubled-basis-set Hylleraas-type wave functions developed by Drake. In this calculation, the singlet-triplet states mixing, the Breit relativistic, QED and finite nuclear size effects are included. Hyperfine splittings and hyperfine shifts have been calculated by diagonalizing the complete fine and hyperfine interaction matrix. Our results nicely agree with the available experimental ones. One of the applications of the calculated …

Electron Collision Studies Of Cesium Using A Magneto-Optical Trap., John Alexander. Macaskill Jan 2003

Electron Collision Studies Of Cesium Using A Magneto-Optical Trap., John Alexander. Macaskill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Experiments involving a magneto-optical trap (MOT) as the target in electron impact cross section studies were carried out. The use of a MOT allows the kinematic properties of the target atoms, and their electronic states, to be controlled via operating parameters of the MOT's lasers. A MOT is capable of saturating the excited state of a gaseous target of atoms and provides a unique opportunity to measure exotic collision processes. Measurements use a trap-loss technique to relate the loss rate of atoms from the trap due to electron interactions to a collision cross section. Total scattering cross section measurements are …

Electron Impact Excitation Studies Of Unstable Atomic Species., Ady Kamel. Abdellatif Jan 2003

Electron Impact Excitation Studies Of Unstable Atomic Species., Ady Kamel. Abdellatif

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The polarization of Balmer-alpha radiation excited in collisions of electrons with atomic hydrogen is presented for an electron energy range from threshold to 1000 eV. Measurements are in good agreement with calculations carried out using either convergent-close-coupling or R-matrix with pseudo-states approaches. Cascade is demonstrated to have a significant effect. Balmer-alpha excitation function data are also presented. A previous measurement of the polarization of Balmer-alpha following dissociative excitation of H2 by electrons is confirmed and extended. The electron impact excitation spectrum of atomic and molecular nitrogen in the VUV range (800 A--1800 A) is presented. The excitation functions of the …

Variational Calculations For General Three-Body Systems., Mark Michael. Cassar Jan 1998

Variational Calculations For General Three-Body Systems., Mark Michael. Cassar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A general study of the bound states for the quantum mechanical three-body problem is presented over a broad range of particle masses. The purpose is to identify improved methods for constructing the variational wave functions in terms of the Hylleraas interparticle coordinates r 1, r2, and r12. A new nonlinear parameter is introduced so that distance scales can be set independently for all three coordinates. Significant improvements are found, particularly as the particle masses approach equality and mass polarization effects become large. As a pilot project, high precision variational calculations are carried out for the 1s2 1S ground state of …

Calculation Of Hyperfine Shifts Of 2s And 2p States Of Heliumlike Atoms Up To Z = 10., Limin. Pan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The hyperfine shifts of 2S and 2P states of heliumlike atoms from helium to neon (both stable and unstable isotopes) have been calculated with accuracy better than 0.1 MHz. The fine structure and hyperfine structure parameters ( CS1,1,CS 1,0,CP1,1, CP1,0,D1, E1,1 and E1,0 ) are calculated using the double-basis-set wavefunctions in Hylleraas coordinates developed by Drake. Hyperfine shifts due to the electric quadrupole interaction, the Breit relativistic, QED and finite nuclear size effects have been included in the calculation. Our results are in good agreement with the recent experimental data.Dept. of Physics. Paper copy at Leddy Library: Theses & Major …

Variational Calculations For The Lithium Isoelectronic Sequence., Mauro. Tambasco Jan 1997

Variational Calculations For The Lithium Isoelectronic Sequence., Mauro. Tambasco

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Variational eigenvalues for the $1s\sp2 2s\ \sp2S$ and $1s\sp2 2p\ \sp2P$ states of the lithium isoelectronic sequence $(3 \le Z \le 15)$ are calculated using multiple basis sets in Hylleraas coordinates. A systematic convergence pattern for each of these nonrelativistic energies is established, and extrapolated values are determined to within an accuracy of several parts in 10$\sp{10}$ to 10$\sp{11}.$ An analytical calculation to determine the first two coefficients $\varepsilon\sp{(0)}$ and $\varepsilon\sp{(1)}$ of the Z-expansion for the above states of the lithium isoelectronic sequence is also presented. Using improved electron-pair energies, the third coefficient $\varepsilon\sp{(2)}$ for the above states is determined …

Order Alpha(6)Mc(2) Contributions To The Fine Structure Splittings Of Helium And Helium-Like Ions., Zong-Chao. Yan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the Douglas and Kroll order $\alpha\sp6mc\sp2$ contributions to the $1s2p\sp3P\sb{J}$ fine structure splittings of helium are evaluated using the new variational wave functions of Drake (2). Our results improve the old calculation of Daley et al. (13) by several orders of magnitude. Extensions are made to two-electron ions in arbitrary angular momentum states. The other triplet states calculated are Z = 2, 1snp $\sp3P\sb{J}$, n = 2,$\cdots$, 10; Z = 3$\cdots$, 12, 1s2p $\sp3P\sb{J}$; Z = 3,$\cdots$,12, 1s3p$\sp3P\sb{J}$; Z = 2,$\cdots$, 12, 1s3d $\sp3D\sb{J}$; and Z = 2, 1snd $\sp3D\sb{J}$, n = 4,$\cdot\cdot\cdot$, 10. Measurements Of The Zeeman Mixing Cross Section Of (6)(2)P(1/2)Cs Atoms, Induced By Collision With Helium Gases., Ju. Gao Jan 1993

Measurements Of The Zeeman Mixing Cross Section Of (6)(2)P(1/2)Cs Atoms, Induced By Collision With Helium Gases., Ju. Gao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Collisional transitions between Zeeman substates of Cs $\rm 6\sp2P\sb{1/2}$ atoms in collisions with He atoms have been investigated by methods of atomic fluorescence spectroscopy. Cs vapour contained in a quartz cell together with helium at low pressure, was selectively excited by pulsed dye-laser radiation to the $\rm 6\sp2P\sb{1/2,-1/2}$ Zeeman substate in a magnetic field of strength ranging from 1.5 T to 7 T. The fluorescence spectrum consisting of components emitted from the directly excited state and from the collisionally populated state, was resolved with a Fabry-Perot interferometer. Measurements of the relative intensities of the fluorescence components yielded the Zeeman mixing …

Zeeman Mixing In 6(2)P Rubidium Atoms Induced In Noble-Gas Collisions., R. Blair. Middleton Jan 1991

Zeeman Mixing In 6(2)P Rubidium Atoms Induced In Noble-Gas Collisions., R. Blair. Middleton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rubidium vapour, together with a noble gas contained in a cell located in a 4.75T magnetic field, was irradiated with light from a pulsed dye laser. This radiation produced selective excitation of the 6$\sp{\rm z}$P$\sb{\rm J,m}$ (J = 1/2, 3/2, m = $-$3/2, $-$1/2, 1/2, 3/2) Zeeman substates. Collisions of the excited 6P atoms with He, Ne and Ar atoms and the resulting Zeeman mixing produced a population in the whole 6P Zeeman manifold and resulted in the emission of a Zeeman fluorescence spectrum which was resolved with a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer, detected with a photomultiplier and stored in a …

Stokes Parameter Studies Of Electron-Rare Gas Collisions., John Jay. Corr Jan 1990

Stokes Parameter Studies Of Electron-Rare Gas Collisions., John Jay. Corr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Electron impact excitation of the rare gases has been studied via a series of polarisation correlation Stokes parameter measurements performed on an electron-photon coincidence apparatus. The Stokes parameters yield fundamental information on the magnitudes and relative phases of the scattering amplitudes which describe the scattering process, and also yield basic information about the elements of the density matrix describing the excited atomic state. Use of an in-plane polarisation analyser allowed a detailed study of the relative so-called "height" of the excited state charge cloud immediately following the electron-atom collision. A breakdown of the reflection symmetry, with respect to the scattering …

Laser Spectroscopy Of The Mercury-Zinc Excimer., Ezzat M. Hegazi Jan 1989

Laser Spectroscopy Of The Mercury-Zinc Excimer., Ezzat M. Hegazi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Extensive and previously unknown fluorescence and excitation spectra of the HgZn excimer have been observed and correlated with a potential energy (PE) diagram drawn and labelled according to Hund's case (c). The spectra were excited in a Hg-Zn mixture contained in a quartz vapour cell by successive pulses from two dye lasers using the pump-and-probe method, and were recorded using techniques of time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. The reservoir states, which became populated by the pump pulse, were found to be the A1, AO$\sp-$ and AO$\sp+$ states. The fluorescence band at 4750 A, which has a 6$\mu$s lifetime and was first observed …

The Coulomb Green Functions With Applications To Two Photon Transitions., Robin Andrew. Swainson Jan 1988

The Coulomb Green Functions With Applications To Two Photon Transitions., Robin Andrew. Swainson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A comprehensive examination of the properties of the Schrodinger- and Dirac-Coulomb Green function as applied to bound state problems is presented. A method of treating the Dirac-Coulomb radial equations is described which allows both the Dirac wavefunctions and Green functions to be treated quite analogously to the corresponding Schrodinger functions. Matrix elements in the form of double Laplace transforms of the Green functions are calculated and presented in a variety of useful forms. The results are applied specifically to two photon transitions in hydrogenic ions, with a calculation of the decay of the 2s$\sb{1/2}$ state.Dept. of Physics. Paper copy at …

Collisional Relaxation In 5(2)P Potassium Atoms., Randolph William Derek. Berends

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Collisional excitation transfer and relaxation of K 5$\sp2$P atoms in collisions with noble gases, as well as the radiative lifetimes of the K 5P, 6P and 7P fine-structure states have been investigated by methods of atomic fluorescence spectroscopy. Potassium vapour was mixed in a cell with a noble gas and selectively excited by pulsed dye-laser radiation to the 5$\sp2$P$\sb{1\over2}$ or the 5$\sp2$P$\sb{3\over 2}$ state in zero magnetic field and to the 5$\sp2$P$\sb{{1\over 2}-{1\over 2}}$ or the 5$\sp2$P$\sb{{3\over 2}-{3\over 2}}$ Zeeman substate in a field of 70 kG. Interferometric analysis of the fluorescence emitted from the directly (optically) excited state and …

The most important aspect of the hydrogen work was the determination of the H(,2) Lyman alpha emission cross section. Use of the Lyman series from atomic hydrogen for the calibration of optical equipment in the 90 to 122 nm …

A Measurement Of The Single Positive Helium Ion(Doublet-2s(1/2)-Doublet-2p(1/2)) Lamb Shift., Jagdish S. Patel Jan 1986

A Measurement Of The Single Positive Helium Ion(Doublet-2s(1/2)-Doublet-2p(1/2)) Lamb Shift., Jagdish S. Patel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A beam of unpolarized metastable He('+) 2s(, 1/2) ions, quenched by a static electric field, (')E has an anisotropy in the emitted radiation that can be used to determine the He('+) 2('2)s(, 1/2)-2('2)p(, 1/2) Lamb shift. A high precision measurement of this anisotropy for a field strength of (VBAR)(')E(VBAR) = (370.97 (+OR-) 0.06) V/cm has been made. The value of the field-free anisotropy, A('(0)), adjusted by small corrections is (0.1178082 (+OR-) 0.0000086), where the uncertainty is the statistical one standard deviation. Using much improved apparatus over Drake, Goldman and van Wijngaarden, our values for both the anisotropy A('(0)) and the …

Excitation Studies In The Rare Gases And Simple Molecules Using A High Resolution Electron Spectrometer., Henricus W. Dassen Jan 1983

Excitation Studies In The Rare Gases And Simple Molecules Using A High Resolution Electron Spectrometer., Henricus W. Dassen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A high resolution electron spectrometer has been used to perform electron scattering studies with both atomic and molecular targets. Work has been done on negative ion resonance production in the rare gases and on polarization correlation measurements in diatomic molecules. High resolution metastable excitation function measurements have been made in the doubly excited state region for Ne, Ar and Kr targets. Comparison of the spectra obtained suggests that the gross features are due to negative ion resonances. Previous techniques which have proved successful in the identification and classification of resonances in the rare gases at energies below the first ionization …

A New Approach To The Jwkb Treatment., Nasr Youssef. Saad Jan 1980

A New Approach To The Jwkb Treatment., Nasr Youssef. Saad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The JWKB approximation is widely used in many problems in quantum mechanics for its simplicity and also because a closed-form solution often provides more insight than a numerical one. Unfortunately, like all approximations, the JWKB method has its limitations: Firstly, it may fail near or at a classical turning point, and secondly, it employs solutions for a potential which deviates from the actual potential W(x). In this work, a new method is proposed to avoid the limitations of the JWKB method while keeping its advantages. First, the singularity around the classical turning point is resolved not only for a linear …
