Using Active Database For Management Of Requirements Change, Haipeng Ge Jan 2005

Using Active Database For Management Of Requirements Change, Haipeng Ge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Software system development projects experience numerous changes during their life cycle. These changes are inevitable and driven by several factors including changes to a system's environment and changes of customers' needs. Requirements change has been reported as the major contributing factor for poor quality or even failures of software projects. This indicates that management of requirements change still remains a challenging problem in software development. A critical part of the requirements change management process is impact analysis. To carry out impact assessment, traceability information is needed. Over two decades, requirements traceability has been an important research topic in software research, …

Vanadium Phosphinimide Complexes For Ethylene Polymerization And The Chemistry Of Phosphinimines And Phosphine Oxides With Borane Reagents, Sarah Bess Hawkeswood Jan 2005

Vanadium Phosphinimide Complexes For Ethylene Polymerization And The Chemistry Of Phosphinimines And Phosphine Oxides With Borane Reagents, Sarah Bess Hawkeswood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A reproducible and high yielding synthesis of the vanadium imide phosphinimide complexes of the general formula V(NAr)(NPR3)Cl2 (Ar = Ph, C6H3-2,6-i-Pr2; R = i-Pr, t-Bu, Ph) has been developed. These complexes upon activation by methylaluminoxane demonstrated low to moderate ethylene polymerization activities comparable to published vanadium imide complexes. The dichloride derivatives react readily with a variety of alkali metal salts and Grignard reagents to produce vanadium imide phosphinimide thiolate, alkyl, aryl, amide and alkoxide complexes. In the presence of Zn, reduction of V(NPh)(NPt-Bu3)Cl2 occurred to afford what is proposed to be a vanadium(IV) imide bridged dimeric species (V(mu-NPh)(NPt-Bu3)Cl)2. The reaction …

Web Service Searching, Ismail Jaghmani Jan 2005

Web Service Searching, Ismail Jaghmani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the growing number of Web services, it is no longer adequate to locate a Web service by searching its name or browsing a UDDI directory. An efficient Web services discovery mechanism is necessary for locating and selecting the required Web services. Searching mechanism should be based on Web service description rather than on keywords. In this work, we introduce a Web service searching prototype that can locate Web services by comparing all available information encoded in Web service description, such as operation name, input and output types, the structure of the underlying XML schema, and the semantic of element …

R/Evolution: Social Medicine In Ink., Philip Morais Jan 2005

R/Evolution: Social Medicine In Ink., Philip Morais

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

R/Evolution: Social Medicine in Ink, positions composition of written words in print vis-a-vis dominance of wider social communications via multi-sensory communications media. Given no mass medium is more of an "antibiotic" perceptually for this contemporaneous "incubation" than specialized visual fragmentation of the Latin alphabet typographically set on pages, marginalized ABCs machines press in ink provide modified relevance in supplying new "circuit breaker" demands for an "electronic" jungle we swamp ourselves with. Writers who disembody their expressions by descendants of Gutenberg's technology thusly fully capitalize by writing in the mask of the artist-critic, to service to all atypically fit for facing …

Canada's Official Development Assistance For News Media And Journalism Promotion In The Developing World: Uncertain Objectives And Inconsistent Outcomes., Blake Cameron Roberts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The prevailing assumption among Western governments is that a free and independent news media is a key to political transition in the developing world. Consequently, media assistance interventions are components of all Western states' democratization, good governance and civil society promotion strategies. It is not clear, however, that Western support for the news media has a lasting effect on the political transition of the developing world. There are strong militating factors that hinder the establishment of a free and independent media sector in most developing states. This study examines specific aspects of Canada's media assistance strategy and engages in a …

The Localization Of Protein Disulfide Isomerase And Further Evidence Towards Its Role As A Neuroprotective Protein In Sh-Sy5y Cells., Dana Seslija

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) is a multifunctional protein most well characterized for its ability to form and exchange disulfide bonds (Darby et al., 1996). The localization of PDI in differentiated human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells was probed by the development of a recombinant fusion protein between green fluorescent protein GFP and PDI. SH-SY5Y cells expressing the recombinant reporter protein were also exposed to oxidative and ischemic stress, and examined for characteristics of apoptosis. These cells demonstrated that PDI provides a significant decrease in apoptotic traits as compared to the control cells. It was observed that there was reduced nuclear condensation, and …

The Problem Of Relevance., John W. Davie Jan 2005

The Problem Of Relevance., John W. Davie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My project is a systematic inquiry into the problem of relevance, which has been identified as an enduring difficulty in, for example, informal logic and information science where it plays a fundamental role in argument and information searches, respectively. My first task involves determining exactly what the problem of relevance is. To achieve that, I collected problem statements from the literature but I also analysed literature on relevance to discover further problems. The key problem that I investigate concerns the question, 'What is relevance?', which I take to concern the meaning and occurrence of relevance. Concerning the semantic question, I …

The Relationship Between Readiness To Change And Relapse Prevention Outcome: A Continuum Approach With An Alcohol Treatment Group, Dory Becker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the role of readiness to change (RTC) within the context of a relapse prevention (RP) treatment program for individuals with alcohol use disorders. RTC was assessed using the continuous version of the Readiness to Change Questionnaire, as research does not support the use of the categorical version with treatment seeking clients. Participants included 80 men and women seeking treatment for alcohol use disorders. Findings revealed that RTC did not predict treatment outcome. These results may have been a product of the poor psychometric properties of the continuous version of the RTCQ, as established in this study. Associated …

Microbially Controlled Selenate Reduction In Nutrient Limited Systems., Paul Alexander Kenward Jan 2005

Microbially Controlled Selenate Reduction In Nutrient Limited Systems., Paul Alexander Kenward

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The global cycling of toxic metals is of great concern to people world wide. Understanding the factors, biotic and abiotic, controlling metal mobility and persistence in natural aquatic environments has been the topics of many studies in recent decades. One of the toxic metals whose mobility and toxicity is of great concern is selenium. Selenium poisoning in fish and aquatic birds can cause terratogenic mutations and increased mortality in contaminated systems. Selenium mobility, and therefore bioavailability is dominated by its oxidation state. The selenium oxyanions selenate and selenite are far more mobile than elemental selenium. Elemental selenium precipitates and binds …

Millennialism And Violence., Herbert Simms Jan 2005

Millennialism And Violence., Herbert Simms

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Religious and secular millenarianism have had a significant impact on the development of many different polities. In both its forms, millenarianism has both positive and negative impacts. It can provide a community with a strong motivation to work together while it promotes group cohesion, and serves as a mechanism of community development. At the same time, it can develop into authoritarianism and totalitarianism. This thesis examines millenarian belief structures' impact on politics and asks several questions. What impact has millenarian belief structures had on the development of the American political culture? Are secular or religious groups more prone to exhibiting …

The phenomenology of suicidal thoughts and behaviour has been an area of increased interest in recent years. One particular area of focus is psychological pain, or psychache. In this dissertation, Edwin Shneidman's psychological theory of suicide was studied. Shneidman has theorized that psychological needs are associated with the development of psychological pain, which in turn leads to suicide as an escape from pain. Two hundred and fifty-seven undergraduate students completed the Personality Research Form, the Psychache Scale, the Orbach and Mikulincer Mental Pain Scale, two items from Shneidman's Psychological Pain Assessment Scale, as well as demographic and suicide history items. …

On Hawking Radiation And The Casimir Effect., Darragh Rooney Jan 2005

On Hawking Radiation And The Casimir Effect., Darragh Rooney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to understand the quantum vacuum in curved space-time by comparing the phenomenon of Hawking radiation with the Casimir effect. I begin with an exposition on the semiclassical approximation, as yet our best framework for understanding the curved vacuum, with additional preliminaries regarding the nature of particles and vacua in general. I discuss the Schwarzschild black hole, and derive the Hawking particle flux. Hawking radiation is viewed as a kinematical effect, which I compare to the case of mirrors moving in flat space-time. I move on to the Casimir effect: I discuss the classic case …

Parallel Evolution Strategy For Protein Threading., Md. Rafiqul Islam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A protein-sequence folds into a specific shape in order to function in its aqueous state. If the primary sequence of a protein is given, what is its three dimensional structure? This is a long-standing problem in the field of molecular biology and it has large implication to drug design and cure. Among several proposed approaches, protein threading represents one of the most promising technique. The protein threading problem (PTP) is the problem of determining the three-dimensional structure of a given but arbitrary protein sequence from a set of known structures of other proteins. This problem is known to be NP-hard …

Poissonprob: A New Rate-Based Available Bandwidth Measurement Algorithm., Lu Xin Jan 2005

Poissonprob: A New Rate-Based Available Bandwidth Measurement Algorithm., Lu Xin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accurate available bandwidth measurement is important for network protocols and distributed programs design, traffic optimization, capacity planning, and service verification. Research on measuring available bandwidth falls into two basic classes: the network traffic modeling algorithms and the self-induced algorithms. The self-induced algorithms are based on packet dispersion techniques. The currently available bandwidth measurement algorithms face the problems of distortion of measurement on multi-hop paths, system resource limitations, probe traffic intrusiveness and measurement accuracy. We have developed a new rate-based self-induced algorithm---PoissonProb. The intervals between probe packets of this algorithm are in Poisson distribution format and the algorithm infers the available …
