Engaging in creative activities is known to increase well-being by reducing levels of stress, anxiety, and improve life satisfaction. Interventions utilizing creative activities have proven to enhance therapeutic results in various mental disorders. Similarly, virtual reality has emerged as an effective method of decreasing negative aspects of mental disorders. While both creative interventions and virtual reality show promise in enhancing well-being, the efficacy of combining the two has not been explored. This study aimed to combine and compare 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional art-making on stress, anxiety, and mood in a non-clinical college student sample. While walking through an exhibit at the East Tennessee Historical Society last year, I witnessed one of the curators tape sheets of white paper on top of some of the paintings. The exhibit served to remember the artwork of the Knoxville artist Lloyd Branson (1853 – 1925). His paintings consisted of mostly portraits, large-scale history scenes, and peaceful landscapes. Of the portraits displayed in the gallery, a few of them showed nude women. One of the paintings titled The Weeping Magdalene referred to a biblical narrative of Mary Magdalene crying. The Villa of the Papyri is one of the most important archaeological sites from Roman antiquity for its preserved architecture, library, and art collection. All three of these would be truly remarkable in their own right, but their combined presence in one site has drawn scholars to study the villa for centuries. This thesis contributes to this corpus of work by examining the west peristyle garden at the Villa of the Papyri and proposing the presence of a philosophical garden therein. The Knoxville Museum of Art is an art museum located in the heart of downtown Knoxville. The museum currently has descriptions of its many art pieces written beside the displays in paragraphs of text. However, this current setup only allows the museum to include a certain amount of text description about the pieces, and not all museum visitors want to take the time to read the small print to the side of each piece. As a result, the museum has requested a website application that allows the museum to upload snippets of audio for selected pieces in order to provide …

This thesis uses literatures on art geography, community building, and the art market to explore the process of space-making for art production. In the year 2000, the Antagonist Art Movement (AAM) was established in New York City to create virtual and physical spaces that support art and artists. I contribute to an ongoing discussion about the relationship between art and geography by exploring how artists create spaces for art, and the role of artist communities in maintaining such spaces.
