Stability Analysis Of The Rotary Drill-String, Liangming Pan Dec 2014

Stability Analysis Of The Rotary Drill-String, Liangming Pan

Doctoral Dissertations

Oil and natural gas are major energy sources for modern society. A rotary drilling system is the best known technology to extract them from underground. The vibration and stability of drilling systems have been studied for decades to improve drilling efficiency and protect expensive down-hole components. It is well known that severe drill-string vibrations are caused by many different loads: axial loads such as the hook load and the self-weight of the drill-string, end torques applied by the surface motor and restrained at the bit, the inertial load caused by whirling, the fluid drag force, and the contact force between …

Models Linking Epidemiology With Immunology And Ecology, Eric Shu Numfor Aug 2014

Models Linking Epidemiology With Immunology And Ecology, Eric Shu Numfor

Doctoral Dissertations

Optimal control can be used to design intervention strategies for the control of infectious diseases and predator-prey systems. In this dissertation, we studied models encapsulating two relatively new areas of mathematical biology, which combine epidemiology with immunology and ecology.

We formulated immuno-epidemiological models of coupled within-host model of ordinary differential equations and between-host model of ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations, using the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) for illustration, and set a framework for optimal control of immuno-epidemiological models. By constructing an iterative sequence from a representation formula for a solution to the linked model and using the fixed-point …

A Spatial Analysis Of Streambank Heterogeneity And Its Contribution To Bank Stability, Paul Vanterpool Simmons May 2014

A Spatial Analysis Of Streambank Heterogeneity And Its Contribution To Bank Stability, Paul Vanterpool Simmons

Masters Theses

Streambank erosion is a function of fluvial detachment and geotechnical failure mechanisms working in combination to cause bank retreat. It is generally agreed that bank stability is dependent on both types of erosion; however, few studies have attempted to correlate the driving and resisting forces between the two. It has been proposed that: (1) streambanks possess a spatial structure and dependence of non-erodible resistant structures such as root masses and rocks; (2) streambanks naturally “armor” themselves from fluvial erosion with a combination of hard points and resistive soil; and (3) the stability of the streambank can be predicted by the …

Microgrid Modeling And Grid Interconnection Studies, Hira Amna Saleem May 2014

Microgrid Modeling And Grid Interconnection Studies, Hira Amna Saleem

Masters Theses

The demand for renewable energies and their integration to the grid has become more pressing than ever before due to the various reasons including increasing population energy demand, depleting fossil fuels, increasing atmospheric population, etc. Thus the vision of a sustainable future requires easy and reliable integration of renewable distributed generators to the grid. This master’s thesis studies the dynamics of distributed generators when they are connected with the main grid. Simulink MATLAB is used for the design and simulations of this system. Three distributed generators are used in this system: Photo-voltaic converter, Fuel cell and diesel generator. The control …
