Comparison Of Equivalent Three And Five Phase Brushless Dc Motors : Evaluation Of Torque Production For Inverter Failures In One Phase, Brian Lain Dec 1996

Comparison Of Equivalent Three And Five Phase Brushless Dc Motors : Evaluation Of Torque Production For Inverter Failures In One Phase, Brian Lain

Masters Theses

In this study the post-failure torque production of three-phase and five-phase brushless dc motors is compared for inverter single phase failures. Brushless dc motors are conventionally configured as three-phase motors, however a five-phase brushless dc motor can produce more torque after a single phase failure. To allow equitable comparison of these two systems an "equivalent" basis is established. The "equivalent" systems will be equal with respect to physical size, dc supply voltage, dc supply current, rated power, and rated torque. After a failure in the inverter the three-phase and five-phase systems have different abilities to produce torque. Two types of …

Kingship In The Poetry Of The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Steven P. Harthorn Dec 1996

Kingship In The Poetry Of The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Steven P. Harthorn

Masters Theses

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle contains among its prose entries several poems which appear between the years 936 and 1104. Almost all of these poems are united by the theme of kingship, which dominates the Chronicle as a whole but receives even closer attention in the poetry. The Chronicle-poems display various attitudes about the kingship: some highly favorable, others critical, and many mixed in their opinions. In this manner, they maintain thematic continuity with the rest of the Chronicle, but amplify its values through rhetorically heightened expression. The plan of this study is as follows. First, we shall briefly consider …

An Ecological Assessment Of Wetland Mitigation Projects In East Tennessee, Kim Pilarski Dec 1996

An Ecological Assessment Of Wetland Mitigation Projects In East Tennessee, Kim Pilarski

Masters Theses

Federal wetland protection regulations stipulate that developers who destroy natural wetlands are required to construct mitigation or replacement wetlands. Despite the frequency of wetland mitigation, few studies have evaluated the ability of mitigated wetlands to mimic the ecological function and community composition of natural wetlands. Fewer still compare mitigation sites with existing natural wetlands in the same ecological region.

Studies from other freshwater habitats suggest that comparisons of the ratios of functional feeding groups (FFGs) of benthic macroinvertebrates (i.e., shredders, scrapers, collectors, predators) may provide useful information about the ability of mitigated wetlands to mimic the ecological functions of natural …

A Study Of Histological Aging Of The Human Clavicle, Nikki L. Rogers Dec 1996

A Study Of Histological Aging Of The Human Clavicle, Nikki L. Rogers

Masters Theses

This study attempted to augment the Stout and Paine (1992) and Stout and colleagues' (1996) methods of histological aging for the clavicle. In the 1992 study, the predictive equation was generated from a sample of only 40 individuals taken from an autopsy population (mean ages 28.6 years) with no prior sampling strategy. The 1996 expansion (Stout et al., 1996) tested the 1992 equation, added 41 males and 42 females from a Swiss cemetery sample to the original autopsy sample to generate a new predictive equation based on all 123 individuals.

In this study, an independent autopsy population was used to …

Comparison Of Forest Stand Edges In Riparian And Mesic Habitats Along Watts Bar Reservoir Shoreline, Ruth Anne Hanahan Dec 1996

Comparison Of Forest Stand Edges In Riparian And Mesic Habitats Along Watts Bar Reservoir Shoreline, Ruth Anne Hanahan

Masters Theses

Approximately fifty years ago, the landscape upslope from the natural, riverine position banks of the Tennessee River was inundated by the closing of Watts Bar Dam. On the currently forested shoreline, habitats within the direct influence of the reservoir pool are riparian. Those above that influence are mesic. The purpose of this research was to determine compositional and structural differences between edges of mature forest stands established in a riparian habitat and those established in a mesic habitat along Watts Bar Reservoir shoreline.

Thirty quadrats were placed on shoreline sites with mature, minimally-disturbed forest stands: 15 in a riparian habitat …

Cryogenic Fluid Vertical Line Quench : Characterization, Validation, And Qualitative Analysis Of A Reduced Gravity Experiment, Jerry Franklin Fairchild

Masters Theses

Data collected from an experimental apparatus to study transient flow boiling effects (quenching) were analyzed. Data included tube wall temperatures and fluid pressures gathered by thermocouples and pressure transducers during the upflow of liquid nitrogen in hot vertical stainless steel and quartz tubes. Attempts were made to characterize system performance and validate previously made assumptions. Qualitative comparisons were made between reduced gravity tests performed on NASA's KG-135 and current ground tests. Differences between terrestrial and reduced gravity quench processes are presented and discussed. Recommendations for future studies are also provided which included additional reduced gravity tests with a better instrumented …

Automated Testing Facility For Television Industry, Roxanna Ganji Dec 1996

Automated Testing Facility For Television Industry, Roxanna Ganji

Masters Theses

This thesis is the result of a research project on an Automated Testing Facility (ATF) for the television industry. The purpose of this project is to provide the industry with on automatic system for measuring television performance from different points of view. Manual methods for measuring television performance have been used for years, and they have become standard industrial practice. However, manual processes limit the volume and consistency of the measurements. Therefore, the ATF project converts the manual procedures to automated ones using the LabVIEW graphical programming language. This thesis reviews the background of the ATF project and studies the …

Liquid-Liquid Extraction In A Batch Agitated Vessel With A Non-Newtonian Dispersed Phase, Charlotte M. Farmer Dec 1996

Liquid-Liquid Extraction In A Batch Agitated Vessel With A Non-Newtonian Dispersed Phase, Charlotte M. Farmer

Masters Theses

Chemical industry utilizes solvent extraction as an alternative to conventional distillation, specifically for the separation of liquid mixtures with unfavorable vapor-liquid equilibria relationships and/or thermally unstable components. Common to most extraction applications (i.e., mixer settler, multistage tower extractors, rotating disc contactors, etc.) is the transfer of material taking place to or from drops of one liquid dispersed in another. Thus, a more complete knowledge of the factors affecting transfer to and from drops is essential to further understanding extraction and the development of improved design principles. An extensive literature search indicates that much work has been done over the years …

Similarity And Features Of Natural Textures, Christopher Michael Heaps Dec 1996

Similarity And Features Of Natural Textures, Christopher Michael Heaps

Masters Theses

Several features responsible for attentive texture similarity have been proposed, but exactly which ones are important for attentive texture perception and classification is unclear. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine if features are used to judge the attentive similarity of natural textures, and if so to identify these features and establish what type of model is best for conceptualizing them. Subjects in two experiments placed pictures into groups however they wished. Other groups of subjects described the resulting clusters and MDS dimensions, identified the objects/surfaces depicted in the pictures, and ranked the pictures along several hypothesized attribute-based …

Aligning Quadrilateral Elements With Principal Stress Directions, Philip Warren Howell Dec 1996

Aligning Quadrilateral Elements With Principal Stress Directions, Philip Warren Howell

Masters Theses

In the finite element method as applied to structural mechanics it has been observed that four-node quadrilateral elements (Q4's) tend to perform well when they are aligned with directions of principal stresses. This seemed to suggest that Q4's had poor behavior when placed in shear and that they would therefore perform better when they were aligned with the principal directions. It is also well known that Q4's perform best when they have near right angles at the corners and near one-to-one aspect ratios. It was speculated that the constraint on aspect ratio might be reduced if the shear were eliminated …

Shear Strength Testing And Fractal Analysis Of Rock Discontinuities, Matthew Byron Haston Dec 1996

Shear Strength Testing And Fractal Analysis Of Rock Discontinuities, Matthew Byron Haston

Masters Theses

The shear strength of rock joints is an important concept in civil engineering and in the geosciences. Shear strength of rock joints is developed by the sliding of two planes of a rock mass over one another. The peak shear strength for any given normal stress has been shown to be related to the base friction angle, the unconfined compressive strength, and the magnitude of roughness of a rock discontinuity. To help reduce the costs associated with testing, models have been developed to predict the peak shear strength of rock joints. Some of these models have been accepted for use …

Design And Analysis Of A Low Cost Capacitive Liquid Level Sensor, Benjamin Neal Lease Dec 1996

Design And Analysis Of A Low Cost Capacitive Liquid Level Sensor, Benjamin Neal Lease

Masters Theses

This paper presents a concept for a low cost, capacitive liquid level detector for use in under hood automotive applications. Current sensors for liquid level detection employ float switch technology. This technology is highly vibration sensitive, and limited in cycle life due to the contacting nature of the reed switch. The proposed sensor detects the presence of liquid by discriminating the change in dielectric constant of the media on the sensor probe. A solid state output is provided eliminating cycle life problems. The entire sensor is constructed from a printed circuit assembly and two plastic parts which are ultrasonically welded …

Interaction Of Retinoblastoma Gene Product With Transcription Factors Atf-A And Atf-2, Huo Li Dec 1996

Interaction Of Retinoblastoma Gene Product With Transcription Factors Atf-A And Atf-2, Huo Li

Masters Theses

The retinoblastoma gene product (pRb) plays an important role in constraining cellular proliferation and in regulating the cell cycle. pRb's regulation of the expression of transforming growth factor β2 (TGF-P2), an inhibitory growth factor gene, was suggested to be mediated by Activating Transcription Factor 2 (ATF-2)(Kim et al., 1992), Factor a (ATF-a) (Gong et al., 1995), and their DNA target element (ATF site: CGTCA) in the TGF-P2 promoter. The differential regulation of TGF-P2 promoter activity (first observed by Gong et al., 1995) by pRb has been explored in more depth and the functional interaction sites of ATF-2 and ATFa on …

Archaeological Investigations At Two 19th Century Farmsteads In Rhea And Roane Counties, Tennessee, Charles Alan Longmire Dec 1996

Archaeological Investigations At Two 19th Century Farmsteads In Rhea And Roane Counties, Tennessee, Charles Alan Longmire

Masters Theses

The Upland South pattern of spatial organization has long been associated with Euroamerican, specifically Scots-Irish, farmstead arrangement in the interior Southeastern United States. Recent archaeological investigations along the Cumberland Escarpment in the East Tennessee Valley have provided a look at two 19th century farmsteads which can be added to the body of archaeological knowledge in this region. This thesis is an in-depth report of archaeological investigations at these two farmsteads. One of these sites, 40RE192, was initially thought to be an early 19th century Euroamerican farmstead dating circa 1820 to 1840. Further analysis has cast doubt on this interpretation. The …

Microbial Control In Industrial Water Recycle Systems, Oscar Lee Martin Dec 1996

Microbial Control In Industrial Water Recycle Systems, Oscar Lee Martin

Masters Theses

Industrial water recycle systems (e.g. cooling and clarification systems) provide an ideal environment for the proliferation of microorganisms. Common microorganisms within these systems include algae, aerobic bacteria, anaerobic bacteria, and fungi. These microbes contribute to biological fouling and microbiologically influenced corrosion. These problems contribute to reduced cooling, routine cleaning, equipment replacement, and treatment. To reduce the potential for these problems, an effective microbial control program must be implemented. An approach that considers the modification of the existing microbial control program before implementing a new program was applied to the problem. When selecting a new microbial control technology, one must consider …

Equivalent Sphere Approximations For Skin, Eye, And Blood Forming Organ Dose Estimation In Space Radiation Protection Studies, William Littell Maxson Dec 1996

Equivalent Sphere Approximations For Skin, Eye, And Blood Forming Organ Dose Estimation In Space Radiation Protection Studies, William Littell Maxson

Masters Theses

Throughout the manned space flight program, protecting astronauts from space radiation has been the subject of continuous and intense study. For interplanetary crews, the two main sources of radiation hazards are solar particle events (SPEs) and galactic cosmic rays (GCR). Solar particle events are composed mainly of high fluxes of protons, neutrons, deuterons, tritons, He-3, and alpha particles which can provide an acute exposure of 200 to 300 cSv from a single event. The galactic cosmic rays are composed of much lower fluxes of high-energy, high-LET, heavy ions which provide stochastic exposures of 12 -15 cGy/yr or 40 - 50 …

Adhesion Of Retrovirally Transduced Endothelial Cells To Expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene Vascular Grafts, Kelly Rae Morgan Dec 1996

Adhesion Of Retrovirally Transduced Endothelial Cells To Expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene Vascular Grafts, Kelly Rae Morgan

Masters Theses

Seeding small inner diameter vascular grafts with endothelial cells genetically modified to secrete anticoagulant proteins offers a means in which to improve graft patency. The endothelium is an attractive site for gene transfer due to its proximity to circulating blood. Previous in vivo and in vitro animal studies using naive cells seeded onto vascular grafts have demonstrated promising results. However, genetically modified ECs appear impaired in their ability to adhere to synthetic graft materials under in vivo and in vitro flow conditions. This study addresses the issue of retrovirally transduced EC adhesion to expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) vascular grafts. Human umbilical …

Modeling Of The Hydrologic Transport Of Mercury In The Upper East Fork Poplar Creek (Uefpc) Watershed, Barry P. Moran Dec 1996

Modeling Of The Hydrologic Transport Of Mercury In The Upper East Fork Poplar Creek (Uefpc) Watershed, Barry P. Moran

Masters Theses

This study evolved out of the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant's requirement to comply with the NPDES permit. The permit will limit mercury loads to 5 grams per day for water leaving the Y-12 Plant at Station 17 based on average daily values for a 3-month period in order to reduce the exposure risk to humans, animals and aquatic life. The NPDES permit allows mercury loads produced from flows greater than 15 million gallons per day (MOD) to be excluded from the calculations. Storm event flows frequently exceed 15 MGD and are capable of producing plant-wide mercury loadings of hundreds of …

Synthesis Of Anion Exchange Resins For Selective Complexation Of Pertechnetate Ion, Vijay T. Patel Dec 1996

Synthesis Of Anion Exchange Resins For Selective Complexation Of Pertechnetate Ion, Vijay T. Patel

Masters Theses

Anion exchange resins were synthesized by functionalizing polymer supports with different crosslink densities. A variety of amines, including trialkylamines, with different alkyl-chain lengths were used as the ligands in the synthesis of monofunctional and bifunctional resins. The resins were characterized by total anion exchange capacities (TAEC), percent solids of the resins, chlorine and nitrogen elemental analyses. The results show that as the alkyl-chain length of the trialkylamine increases, the degree of functionalization decreases. An increase in alkyl-chain length also contributes to an increase in hydrophobicity, resulting in slow accessibility. Bifunctional resins were synthesized with two different trialkylamines on a 5% …

Biosynthesis And Chemical Constants Of Mono-Acylated Anthocyanins, Marc Redus Dec 1996

Biosynthesis And Chemical Constants Of Mono-Acylated Anthocyanins, Marc Redus

Masters Theses

In this study, a number of non-natural anthocyanins were biosynthesized by the addition of various organic acids to suspension cultures of wild carrot. This resulted in the incorporation of the organic acid residue in a specific place on the anthocyanin molecule, and the resulting novel anthocyanin was purified and characterized. The color of anthocyanins generally decreases with increasing pH due to the conversion of the flavylium ion into a hemiacetal. In addition, the flavylium ion can be converted into blue quinonoid forms at increased PH. Because these reactions result in loss of or changed color of the anythocyanins, their rate …

A Variety Index For Toddlers : Development And Application, Dana Rae Robertson Dec 1996

A Variety Index For Toddlers : Development And Application, Dana Rae Robertson

Masters Theses

When embarking upon the development of an index of dietary variety for toddlers, several issues must be considered. The first issue is which food guide or pattern will be used as a model for variety. A second issue is what method will be used to assess dietary intake; considerations include the type of information desired, the amount of time available for collection, resources available, the degree of accuracy desired, and characteristics of the population. After information is collected, the way the data are analyzed is another consideration in the formation of an index of variety. If accurate quantification of variety …

A current output multiplicity discriminator for use in the front-end electronics (FEE) of the Multiplicity Vertex Detector (MVD) for the PHENIX detector at RHIC has been developed in the Orbit Semiconductor 1.2 µ CMOS, n-well process. Requirements for the multiplicity discriminator include low-power, small area, high speed and common threshold matching. Additionally the discriminator must trigger on input signals ranging from 0.25 MIP(20 mV for the detector) to 5 MIP. Frequency response of the discriminator is such that the circuit is capable of generating an output for every detector beam crossing (105 ns). One channel of multiplicity discriminator occupies an …

On The Reconstruction Of Transient Automotive Emissions : An Application Of Generalized Predictive Control Theory, David Estes Smith Dec 1996

On The Reconstruction Of Transient Automotive Emissions : An Application Of Generalized Predictive Control Theory, David Estes Smith

Masters Theses

Due to increasing interest in the emissions-producing characteristics of today's automobiles, emissions testing procedures have come under close scrutiny. In addition, development of procedures to measure emissions of vehicles operating in "on-road" conditions have been proposed to gain knowledge of the instantaneous mass flow rates of various legislated gaseous emissions. The problem with the measurement of instantaneous flow rates is that the response of modern emissions analyzers are too slow for reliable results. Therefore, a method for improving the response of these instruments is needed.

A method is described which utilizes generalized predictive control theory concepts in conjunction with system …
