Effects Of Oxytocin Administered In The Dry Period On Subsequent Lactation In Cows, George Martin Gorman Dec 1966

Effects Of Oxytocin Administered In The Dry Period On Subsequent Lactation In Cows, George Martin Gorman

Masters Theses

The need for a dry period in dairy cows has been established for more than a century, but the optimum length of the period and reason for the benefit derived from the pause in lactation has been studied only recently. On the basis of survey studies a dry period of 60-90 days has been shown to result in maximum production. Until a few years ago the stimulus of a dry period to lactation was thought to be due solely to a rebuilding of the nutrient stores in the animal. More recently the involvement of hormonal factors such as an interaction …

Effects Of Soil Moisture, Nitrogen And Several Climatic Factors On Yield And Evapotranspiration Of Corn, Bobby Ray Hathcock Dec 1966

Effects Of Soil Moisture, Nitrogen And Several Climatic Factors On Yield And Evapotranspiration Of Corn, Bobby Ray Hathcock

Masters Theses

A knowledge of the moisture content of the soil is important in irrigation experiments, in field experiments in general, and in irrigation practice on the farm (45). Measurement of soil moisture content has received much attention in the past several years with the increased concern and investigation into the area of consumptive use (evapotranspiration). In recent years, the emphasis on water use by various crops has led to the development of several methods for estimating evapotranspiration (ET.) In order to estimate ET, it is necessary to have a record of the soil moisture content throughout the growing season. The neutron …

The Results Of The Combined Isotonic-Isometric Execution Compared To The Isotonic Execution In Terms Of Strength Development And Muscle Girth, Arnold William Pedersen Dec 1966

The Results Of The Combined Isotonic-Isometric Execution Compared To The Isotonic Execution In Terms Of Strength Development And Muscle Girth, Arnold William Pedersen

Masters Theses

INTRODUCTION

Although many studies have been made to determine a method of weight training which produces the greatest increases in muscle strength and muscle girth, the conclusions vary in theory and methodology.

Weight training has been subjected to much research in the past. Many of the researchers agree on a method of weight training which produces the best results. However, some advocate the use of isometric contractions as the most desirable method of gaining strength. Others state that isotonic exercise is the only logical way to increase one's strength. Still others say a combination of the two will produce optimum …

The Effect Of Avitaminosis E On The Incorporation Of 35S-Sulfate By Rat Tissue Components, Sara Frierson Fulton Dec 1966

The Effect Of Avitaminosis E On The Incorporation Of 35S-Sulfate By Rat Tissue Components, Sara Frierson Fulton

Masters Theses

(Introduction) Previous work in this laboratory has shown that there is a decrease in sulfate production when 35S-cysteine is incubated with liver homogenates prepared from vitamin E-deficient rats as compared with the sulfate produced by homogenates from vitamin E-sufficient rats. In avitaminosis E the lowered incorporation of a test dose of 35SO4= into cellular lipoprotein and the mucopolysaccharides isolated from rib cartilage and lung has been shown. A decrease in the breaking strength of rats' aorta, presumably the result of impaired collagen production, was obtained when the aortas from vitamin E-deficient rats were compared …

Evaluation Of Factors Affecting The Performance Of Spring Lambs, G. Srinivasan Dec 1966

Evaluation Of Factors Affecting The Performance Of Spring Lambs, G. Srinivasan

Masters Theses

The predominant system of commercial sheep production in Tennessee is the production of milk-fat spring lambs. Spring lamb is the term applied to the new crop of lambs arriving at the market in the spring, generally born in the early winter and winter months, and marketed directly off their dams. Spring pasture, favorable climate, breeding, care and management have contributed to the excellence of spring lamb production in Tennessee. The objective of the breeder in spring lamb produc-tion is to produce lambs with a fast rate of growth from birth to slaughter and a sufficient amount of fat to bring …

Morphological Response Of Chrysanthemum Morifolium Varieties To A Growth Retardant As Modified By Light, James G. Staley

Masters Theses

More than fifty years ago scientist discovered that the growth and behavior of many plants could be changed and often controlled by applying small amounts of organic chemicals to leaves, stems, or roots. These chemicals have become known as "growth regulators" and some have proved to be extremely useful. Today growth regulating chemicals are being used as standard practices in the production of farm crops and ornamental plants. The responses obtained from these confounds have been adapted to many commercial uses. New chemicals with new uses continually increase the list. How plants respond when sprayed. dusted, or soaked with growth …

The Effects Of Glycerol Levels, Equilibration Times, And Their Interrelationship With Bulls On The Ability Of Bovine Semen To Survive The Freezing Process, Thomas William Lamb Dec 1966

The Effects Of Glycerol Levels, Equilibration Times, And Their Interrelationship With Bulls On The Ability Of Bovine Semen To Survive The Freezing Process, Thomas William Lamb

Masters Theses

In the past few years, artificial insemination has become one of the most important tools that the cattle breeder has at his disposal to improve the quality of his animals. The artificial insemination organizations invest a considerable amount of time and money in locating sires. A portion of these bulls are rejected after semen test because of low fertility or a low rate of survival of spermatozoa during the semen freezing process. The loss of many valuable bulls and much time and money might be avoided if the causes of freezing failures in some bulls could be determined. With this …

Productivity In Hampshire, Dorset And Southdown Flocks Of Sheep And Evaluation Of Factors Affecting Performance Of Lambs, Ben Thomas Powell Dec 1966

Productivity In Hampshire, Dorset And Southdown Flocks Of Sheep And Evaluation Of Factors Affecting Performance Of Lambs, Ben Thomas Powell

Masters Theses

Agriculture is entering an age where, to survive, the Tennessee farmer must either purchase more land or improve production on the land he has. Most of the time it is more economical to improve one's production per acre or per animal. One method of accomplishing greater production is through selection of superior producing animals. Selection has been done for centuries through visual observation. To justify their existence as a group, breeders of registered sheep must produce a type of sheep superior to those in the hands of the commercial producers they serve. This superiority must be expressed in demonstrated ability …

An Evaluation Of Crop And Soil Management Systems On Selected Farms In Dyer County, Tennessee, Clarence Homer Jent

Masters Theses

Since 1960, crop and soil management systems that do not provide adequate protection against soil erosion on sloping land have come into widespread use by farmers in West Tennessee. This has been the result of an increasing demand for soybeans and the favorable prices that farmers have received for this crop in recent years. The acreage of soybeans harvested for beans in Tennessee has steadily increased each year for the past six years. In 1960, Tennessee farmers harvested 394,000 acres of soybeans (8). In 1966, the forecast is that 941,000 acres will be harvested (9). The acreage of other cultivated …

Performance Of Diffeent Breed Types Of Ewes, Ram D. Singh Aug 1966

Performance Of Diffeent Breed Types Of Ewes, Ram D. Singh

Masters Theses

The production of milk-fat spring lambs is the predominant system of commercial sheep production in Tennessee. These lambs are produced primarily by mating native, western crossbred, or fine-wool grade ewes to purebred rams of the mutton breeds, including Hampshire, Southdown and Suffolk. Most producers of spring lambs prefer to sell their ewe Iambs and to buy replacement ewes from western sources rather than produce home-raised replacements. One of the major problems confronting spring lamb producers in this area is a source of productive ewes. The breeding of replacement ewes has considerable economic significance to the producer for greater and more …

Glucose Absorption, Carbohydrase Activities, And Carbohydrate Hydrolysis And Uptake In The Intestinal Tract Of Mature Sheep, Foster Glen Hembry

Masters Theses

Carbohydrates are the predominant source of energy used to carry out the biological processes of growth, maintenance, and reproduction in the animal body. Glucose is the most important carbohydrate metabolite in both the nonruminant and the ruminant animal. In the non ruminant, glucose is also the most abundant end product of carbohydrate digestion.

The nonruminant is able to utilize only traces of cellulose and hemicellulose as end products of microbial degradation in the large intestine, and the small intestine of this animal is the major site of carbohydrate assimilation. The microbiological digestion of carbohydrates makes the reticulo-nimen and to a …

The Economics Of Forage And Concentrate Rations For East Tennessee Grade A Herds With High Production Records, Roger Stanley Lyon Aug 1966

The Economics Of Forage And Concentrate Rations For East Tennessee Grade A Herds With High Production Records, Roger Stanley Lyon

Masters Theses

The grade A milk industry has steadily developed into one of the major agricultural industries in Tennessee today. The volume of Grade A milk sold under Federal order increased 51 per cent between 1956 and 1963. Yet, along with this increase in milk production, the number of grade A milk producers has declined. The decline in the number of pro-ducers is due to the advancement of technology in dairying which has caused greater milk production per cow, larger herd sizes and a tremen-dous increase in capital investment, These factors have forced many small producers out of production. For years dairy …

A Comparison Of Systems Of Developing Beef Bulls To About Twenty Months Of Age, Thomas C. Snodgrass Aug 1966

A Comparison Of Systems Of Developing Beef Bulls To About Twenty Months Of Age, Thomas C. Snodgrass

Masters Theses

Performance testing is important in the beef cattle industry as an aid to selection for improvement. It is an excellent means for evaluating the genotypic and phenotypic worth of an animal. Since the sire transmits one-half of the genetic material of each calf, an estimate of the genetic potential of each sirs should be made prior to selection if optimum genetic progress is to be accomplished. Despite the need for choosing a herd sire with a reliable performance record, there is still little information in the literature relating to methods of developing beef breeding bulls. Most per-formance testing programs for …
