Strong Seedling Recruitment Does Not Limit Mangrove Vulnerability To Harvest, Orou G. Gaoue, Kowiyou Yessoufou Jun 2019

Strong Seedling Recruitment Does Not Limit Mangrove Vulnerability To Harvest, Orou G. Gaoue, Kowiyou Yessoufou

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

Ecological studies on the impacts of timber harvesting contributed to inform sustainable management strategies of tropical forests. However, these studies rely strongly on two major assumptions: (i) strong seedlings recruitment predispose for positive population dynamics, and (ii) more adult trees is a guarantee for a strong reproductive capability of the population. These assumptions are applied without accounting for the life history of the harvested species. Here, we revisit these assumptions in light of the life history theory, which predicts different responses of short- and long-lived species to perturbation. We predict that harvesting adults, rather than reducing seedling recruitment of long-lived …

Emergence Of Antibiotic Resistance In Immunocompromised Host Populations: A Case Study Of Emerging Antibiotic Resistant Tuberculosis In Aids Patients, Ashley A. Denegre, Martia L. Ndeffo Mbah, Kellen Myers, Nina F. Fefferman Feb 2019

Objective

The evolution of antibiotic resistance is far outpacing the development of new antibiotics, causing global public health concern about infections that will increasingly be unresponsive to antimicrobials. This risk of emerging antibiotic resistance may be meaningfully altered in highly AIDS-immunocompromised populations. Such populations fundamentally alter the bacterial evolutionary landscape in two ways, which we seek to model and analyze. First, widespread, population-level immunoincompetence creates a novel host environment with disrupted selective pressures. Second, within AIDS-prevalent populations, the recommendation that antibiotics be taken to treat and prevent opportunistic infection raises the risk of selection for drug-resistant pathogens.

Storage Time And Temperature On The Sensory Properties Broccoli, Robert Pellegrino, Jennifer Wheeler, Curtis R. Luckett Jan 2019

Storage Time And Temperature On The Sensory Properties Broccoli, Robert Pellegrino, Jennifer Wheeler, Curtis R. Luckett

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

Typically, broccoli arrives at the store within 7–14 days of harvest and is kept refrigerated until purchased or considered waste. To date, information has been limited on how this time on the shelf or storage temperature affects the sensory attributes that contribute to broccoli purchase or repurchase. In this study, 100 consumers performed acceptance tests and a check-all-that-apply (CATA) section to characterize sensory changes in two cultivars of broccoli (‘Diplomat’ and ‘Emerald Crown’) stored at two temperatures (0 °C and 4 °C) over five time points: 0, 14, 21, 28, and 42 days. Due to quality degradation during storage, the …

Two Hymenopteran Egg Sac Associates Of The Tent-Web Orbweaving Spider, Cyrtophora Citricola (Forskål, 1775) (Araneae, Araneidae), Angela Chuang, Michael W. William Gates, Lena Grinsted, Richard Askew, Christy Leppanen Jan 2019

Two Hymenopteran Egg Sac Associates Of The Tent-Web Orbweaving Spider, Cyrtophora Citricola (Forskål, 1775) (Araneae, Araneidae), Angela Chuang, Michael W. William Gates, Lena Grinsted, Richard Askew, Christy Leppanen

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

We report the discovery of two wasp species emerging from egg sacs of the spider Cyrtophora citricola (Forskål 1775) collected from mainland Spain and the Canary Islands. We identify one as Philolema palanichamyi (Narendran 1984) (Hymenoptera, Eurytomidae) and the other as a member of the Pediobius pyrgo (Walker 1839) species group (Hymenoptera, Eulophidae). This is the first report of Philolema in Europe, and the first documentation of hymenopteran egg predators of C. citricola. The latter finding is particularly relevant, given the multiple invasive populations of C. citricola in the Americas and the Caribbean, where neither egg sac predation nor …

When To Turn To Nature-Inspired Solutions For Cyber Systems, Nina F. Fefferman Jan 2019

When To Turn To Nature-Inspired Solutions For Cyber Systems, Nina F. Fefferman

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

Nature-Inspired algorithms have given us elegant solutions across the a broad spectrum of design challenges[1]. Efforts within cyber-systems are equally replete with cases in which algorithms either adapted from, or at least inspired by, observations of natural biological systems, ranging from efficient packet routing [2], to anomaly detection [3], and beyond [4]. It is tempting to turn to nature for many reasons, both aesthetic and practical. At the most basic of practical reasons, these algorithms are already-proven techniques, avoiding the potential for catastrophic failure (so long as the application is sufficiently similar to the natural setting). Of course, simple assurance …
