This report describes how the climate of Casco Bay watershed in Maine has changed over the past century and how the future climate of the region is likely to be affected by human emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases that are warming the planet. Overall, the region has been getting warmer and wetter over the last century, and these trends have increased over the last four decades. To generate future projections for Portland, Farmington, and Lewiston, simulated temperature and precipitation from four climate models were fitted to local, long-term weather observations. Unknowns regarding fossil fuel consumption were accounted for by using …

Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) topographic data has revolutionized the rapid collection and subsequent analysis of highly accurate coastal topography. LIDAR data can be collected over relatively large geographic areas, and has been typically used to support mapping of a variety of different shoreline features, along with post-storm impacts.

Fish Assemblage And Habitat Assessment Of The Presumpscot River, Mbi Technical Report, Chris O. Yoder, Lon E. Hersha, Edward T. Rankin

Publications

The Midwest Biodiversity Institute received a grant from the Casco Bay Estuary Partnership in 2006 to conduct an assessment of the fish assemblage of the Presumpscot River between the outlet of Sebago Lake and Casco Bay. The overall goal of this project is to assess the current status of the fish assemblages as it is related to both historical and contemporary biological, chemical, and physical characteristics and stressors. With the exception of a prior study focused on anadromous fishes in the lower mainstem in 2003 (Normandeau Associates 2004), comparatively little is known about the relative abundance, distribution, and composition of …

Status, Trends, And Conservation Of Eelgrass In Atlantic Canada And The Northeastern United States: Workshop Report, Hilary A. Neckles, Al R. Hanson, Phil Colarusso, Robert N. Buchsbaum, Fred T. Short

Eelgrass (Zostera marina L) is the dominant seagrass occurring in eastern Canada and the northeastern United States, where it often forms extensive meadows in coastal and estuarine areas. Eelgrass beds are extremely productive and provide many valuable ecological functions and ecosystem services. They serve as critical feeding and nursery habitat for a wide variety of commercially and recreationally important fish and shellfish and as feeding areas for waterfowl and other waterbirds. Eelgrass detritus is also transported considerable distances to fuel offshore food webs. In addition, eelgrass beds stabilize bottom sediments, dampen wave energy, absorb nutrients from surrounding waters, and retain …

Workshop invitation.

The objective of the workshop was the timely dissemination of information regarding the science and conservation of eelgrass among federal, state, and provincial agencies and environmental organizations. Invited presentations and discussions highlighted status and trends in eelgrass distribution and abundance, factors controlling ecosystem change, current management issues, and regional examples of eelgrass conservation efforts. Participants were invited from all sectors of eelgrass science and management throughout eastern Canada and the northeastern United States.

This event was hosted by Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment, Friends of Casco Bay, Casco Bay Estuary Partnership, and Bay of Fundy …

Overview

This CD resource guide accompanies a series of maps made available to teachers1 for educational use. The maps cover basic geographical data within the Presumpscot watershed in southern Maine, including past and present settlement patterns, dam location, population density, surface water quality classifications, and amount of land that has been paved over or built upon (impervious surfaces). Scientists, scholars, conservation experts, land use managers, and the public use such maps to understand resource issues and help make better decisions about them. This CD provides opportunities for students to explore environmental issues in their own watershed using a Geographic Information …

Casco Bay Shorebird Monitoring Project: Year One Revised 2009 Report, Slade Moore Jan 2009

Casco Bay Shorebird Monitoring Project: Year One Revised 2009 Report, Slade Moore

Publications

The objective of this project was to initiate a multi-year, collaborative shorebird monitoring program under the auspices of the Casco Bay Estuary Partnership. Project partners are provided in Appendix A. This first year of the project focused primarily on a subset of Casco Bay shorebird areas previously designated by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW). Although some knowledge exists of shorebird habitat within the Casco Bay region, several years of uninterrupted annual monitoring by this project is anticipated to more accurately characterize shorebird use of distinct sites in this system. Depending on the length of this time …

Measurement Of Sediment Oxygen Demand (Sod) In Upper New Meadows River And Quahog Bay Estuarine Areas, Maine, Tim Bridges

Publications

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MDEP), Bureau of Land and Water Quality and EPA’s Regional Office of Environmental Protection requested EPA’s Office of Environmental Measurement and Evaluation assistance in evaluating the sediment oxygen demand (SOD) in the New Meadows Rivers and Quahog Bay estuarine areas of south coastal Maine. The New Meadows River and Quahog Bay estuaries are part of the Casco Bay estuarine system east southeast of Brunswick and west of Bath.
