Geophysical Delineation Of The Freshwater/Saline-Water Transition Zone In The Barton Springs Segment Of The Edwards Aquifer, Travis And Hays Counties, Texas, September 2006 Scientific Investigations Report 2007-5244, Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District, U.S. Geological Survey Jan 2006

Geophysical Delineation Of The Freshwater/Saline-Water Transition Zone In The Barton Springs Segment Of The Edwards Aquifer, Travis And Hays Counties, Texas, September 2006 Scientific Investigations Report 2007-5244, Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District, U.S. Geological Survey

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

Abstract During September 2006, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District, conducted a geophysical pilot study to determine whether time-domain electromagnetic (TDEM) sounding could be used to delineate the freshwater/saline-water transition zone in the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards aquifer in Travis and Hays Counties, Texas. There was uncertainty regarding the application of TDEM sounding for this purpose because of the depth of the aquifer (200-500 feet to the top of the aquifer) and the relatively low-resistivity clayey units in the upper confining unit. Twenty-five TDEM soundings were made along four 2-3-mile-long profiles …

Effects Of Low Spring Discharge On Water Quality At Barton, Eliza, And Old Mill Springs, Austin Texas, David A. Johns Jan 2006

Effects Of Low Spring Discharge On Water Quality At Barton, Eliza, And Old Mill Springs, Austin Texas, David A. Johns

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

Water quality in Barton Springs and is associated outlets, Eliza, Old Mill and Upper Barton Springs, declines as flows decline. In addition, storm water impacts as indicated by specific conductance increase as spring flows decrease. During droughts, declining water quality is due to greater percentages of saline water mixing with "normal" Edwards Aquifer waters. Regression formulas allow for predictions of concentrations of specific conductance, nitrate, chloride, sulfate, and sodium that might be expected during severe droughts. Microbots For Large-Scale Planetary Surface And Subsurface Exploration Niac Phase Ii Year I Report, Steven Dubowsky Jan 2006

Microbots For Large-Scale Planetary Surface And Subsurface Exploration Niac Phase Ii Year I Report, Steven Dubowsky

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

From the Introduction: "This report documents the progress of the NIAC project 'Microbots for Large-Scale Planetary Surface and Subsurface Exploration' for its first year September 2005 to September 2006). The Microbots discussed in this report are new robotic system design paradigm for the exploration of planets, moons and other bodies of the Solar System. The objective of these systems is to investigate extremely difficult terrain surface and subsurface areas such as caves and deep craters. Both of these important areas cannot be traverse by conventional rovers." Open Access See Extended description for more information.

Implications Of Subduction Rehydration For Earth's Deep Water Cycle, Lars Rüpke, Jason Phipps Morgan, Jacqueline Eaby Dixon Jan 2006

Implications Of Subduction Rehydration For Earth's Deep Water Cycle, Lars Rüpke, Jason Phipps Morgan, Jacqueline Eaby Dixon

Marine Science Faculty Publications

The “standard model” for the genesis of the oceans is that they are exhalations from Earth’s deep interior continually rinsed through surface rocks by the global hydrologic cycle. No general consensus exists, however, on the water distribution within the deeper mantle of the Earth. Recently Dixon et al. [2002] estimated water concentrations for some of the major mantle components and concluded that the most primitive (FOZO) are significantly wetter than the recycling associated EM or HIMU mantle components and the even drier depleted mantle source that melts to form MORB. These findings are in striking agreement with the results of …

Summary Of 2005 Groundwater Dye Tracing, Barton Springs Segment Of The Edwards Aquifer, Hays And Travis Counties, Central Texas Bseacd Report Of Investigations 2006-0530, Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District Jan 2006

Summary Of 2005 Groundwater Dye Tracing, Barton Springs Segment Of The Edwards Aquifer, Hays And Travis Counties, Central Texas Bseacd Report Of Investigations 2006-0530, Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

ABSTRACT The Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District and the City of Austin, injected non-toxic organic dyes into four karst features within the western portion of the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer in May 2005. The objectives of the study were to determine time-of-travel, direction, and destination of groundwater flow, and to better delineate the groundwater divide between the Barton Springs and San Antonio segments of the Edwards Aquifer south of Onion Creek. The study was conducted during relatively high-flow conditions while Barton Springs discharged at 104 cfs. Rapid groundwater flow rates from creek and upland recharge features to …

Evaluating The Reliability Of Continuous Resistivity Profiling To Detect Submarine Groundwater Discharge In A Shallow Marine Environment: Sarasota Bay, Florida, Arnell Harrison Jan 2006

Evaluating The Reliability Of Continuous Resistivity Profiling To Detect Submarine Groundwater Discharge In A Shallow Marine Environment: Sarasota Bay, Florida, Arnell Harrison

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) can be an important pathway for nutrients entering coastal systems. However SGD flow paths can be difficult to identify and flow volumes difficult to quantify. This study assesses whether geophysical techniques are potentially cost effective methods for detecting the presence or lack of SGD within an estuary environment found in Sarasota Bay, Florida. In this area, a rapid increase in urbanization has led to increased nitrogen loading into the bay, with some 10% of this loading attributed to SGD. Discharging groundwater is expected to be fresher and hence higher resistivity, than "background" surface waters. Thus resistivity …
