Metajournalistic Discourse On The Rise Of Gaming Journalism, Gregory P. Perreault, Tim P. Vos
Metajournalistic Discourse On The Rise Of Gaming Journalism, Gregory P. Perreault, Tim P. Vos
School of Advertising & Mass Communications Faculty Publications
Gaming journalism, which finds its origins in public relations-oriented gaming magazines, discursively attached itself to traditional journalism in the wake of the 2014 GamerGate controversy. Yet it had remained unclear where gaming journalism fits within the ecology of journalism. This study examines metajournalistic discourse regarding gaming journalism from 2010 to 2018 and analyzes 53 articles about gaming journalism from that period in order to understand how the broader journalistic field conceptualized gaming journalism’s place within it. This study argues that gaming journalism is discursively marked as a lower, marginal form of journalism based on perceived differences in professional values and …
Narrative Framing Of The Syrian Refugee Crisis In British Religious News, Gregory P. Perreault, Newly Paul
Narrative Framing Of The Syrian Refugee Crisis In British Religious News, Gregory P. Perreault, Newly Paul
School of Advertising & Mass Communications Faculty Publications
This paper examines how religious news organizations in the UK covered the Syrian refugee crisis in Europe. Using narrative framing theory, this paper examines all coverage from 2015 and 2016 published in bbc Religion (a part of bbc News), The Muslim News, and Christian Today to examine shared and disparate narratives regarding Syrian refugees migrating to the UK. Four major frames emerged from our analysis of the media coverage in religious and mainstream publications: a humanizing frame, saviour frame, dehumanizing frame, and, redemption frame. The publications differed in their use of these frames as well as the use …

"Nigger": A Critical Race Realist Analysis Of The N-Word Within Hate Crimes Law, Shayne E. Jones, Gregory S. Parks
"Nigger": A Critical Race Realist Analysis Of The N-Word Within Hate Crimes Law, Shayne E. Jones, Gregory S. Parks
Criminology Faculty Publications
On a 2005 summer morning, Nicholas “Fat Nick” Minucci (White) beat Glenn Moore (Black) with a baseball bat and robbed him. During the assault, Minucci repeatedly screamed the N-word. At trial, Minucci’s attorney argued that he had not committed a hate crime. The essence of the defense’s argument was that Minucci’s use of the N-word while assaulting and robbing Moore was not indicative of any bias or prejudice. The defense went on to indicate that Minucci had Black friends, was immersed in Black culture, and employed the N-word as part of his everyday vocabulary. Two Black men—Gary Jenkins (hip hop …

Writing A Pedagogy Of Whiteness: A Relational Ethic Of Teaching, Chris Mcrae, John T. Warren
Writing A Pedagogy Of Whiteness: A Relational Ethic Of Teaching, Chris Mcrae, John T. Warren
Communication Faculty Publications
Our experiences teaching about whiteness in communication classrooms have resulted in a wide spectrum of responses from students. We are troubled in particular by the overly resistant and compliant student responses to this subject, as we desire to engage with our students in a critically nuanced and potentially transformative dialogue about race and racism. This essay builds from our experiences in the classroom and works to articulate the dilemmas we often face as we teach about whiteness in our courses. These dilemmas mirror similar concerns we face in our own scholarly practices of reflexivity. By troubling our reflexive practices, as …
The Evolution Of Sensory Divergence In The Context Of Limited Gene Flow In The Bumblebee Bat, Sebastian J. Puechmaille, Meriadeg Ar Gouilh
The Evolution Of Sensory Divergence In The Context Of Limited Gene Flow In The Bumblebee Bat, Sebastian J. Puechmaille, Meriadeg Ar Gouilh

The sensory drive theory of speciation predicts that populations of the same species inhabiting different environments can differ in sensory traits, and that this sensory difference can ultimately drive speciation. However, even in the best-known examples of sensory ecology driven speciation, it is uncertain whether the variation in sensory traits is the cause or the consequence of a reduction in levels of gene flow. Here we show strong genetic differentiation, no gene flow and large echolocation differences between the allopatric Myanmar and Thai populations of the world's smallest mammal, Craseonycteris thonglongyai, and suggest that geographic isolation most likely preceded sensory …

Sulfate And Phosphate Speleothems At Jenolan Caves, New South Wales, Australia, Ross E. Pogson, R. Armstrong L. Osborne, David M. Colchester
Sulfate And Phosphate Speleothems At Jenolan Caves, New South Wales, Australia, Ross E. Pogson, R. Armstrong L. Osborne, David M. Colchester
KIP Articles
Sulfate and phosphate deposits at Jenolan Caves occur in a va- riety of forms and compositions including crusts, ‘flowers’ and fibrous masses of gypsum (selenite), and clusters of boss-like speleothems (potatoes) of ardealite (calcium sulphate, phos- phate hydrate) with associated gypsum. This boss-like mor- phology of ardealite does not appear to have been previously described in the literature and this is the first report of ardealite in New South Wales. Gypsum var. selenite occurs in close association with pyrite-bearing palaeokarst, while the ardealite gypsum association appears to relate to deposits of mineralised bat guano. Isotope studies confirm that the two …
