Struggle In The Sunshine City: The Movement For Racial Equality In St. Petersburg Florida 1955-1968, Peyton L. Jones Apr 2010

Struggle In The Sunshine City: The Movement For Racial Equality In St. Petersburg Florida 1955-1968, Peyton L. Jones

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Recent decades have seen a shift in the focus of civil rights historiography. Building upon the exhaustive studies of national figures and events, and in search of new perspectives, many historians have concentrated on local movements often ignored or forgotten. Other than the work of a few local scholars, the civil rights movement as it occurred in St. Petersburg, Florida, has received little attention. Furthermore, the limited scholarship lacks the cohesion necessary to compare and contrast the movement with similar events throughout the state and across the nation. The story of St. Petersburg's active and significant struggle for social equality, …

Mapping Soil Moisture At A Regional Scale Using Integrated Remote Sensing, Gis, And Radar Precipitation: A Comparative Study, Shanon M. Connelly Jan 2010

Mapping Soil Moisture At A Regional Scale Using Integrated Remote Sensing, Gis, And Radar Precipitation: A Comparative Study, Shanon M. Connelly

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

This research attempts to develop a methodology to estimate soil moisture content from current weather station radar data (NEXRAD or Next-Generation Radar), a network of 159 high-resolution Doppler weather radars operated by the National Weather Service (NWS). The overall goal of the experiment design is to establish a hybrid methodology that will combine Geographic Information System (GIS) with mass-balance methods and pedotransfer functions (PTF) with information technology (such as remote sensing and real-time Stage III NEXRAD-WSR-88D data) to create accurate soil moisture maps at spatial and temporal scales higher than current methodologies. Accurate soil moisture maps will drastically affect agriculture …

Diet Analysis And Community Characteristics Of Lepomis (Sunfish) Species Congregating Near Natural Spring Vents Of The Rainbow River, Florida, Michael S. Sears Jan 2010

Diet Analysis And Community Characteristics Of Lepomis (Sunfish) Species Congregating Near Natural Spring Vents Of The Rainbow River, Florida, Michael S. Sears

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Little is known about the ecology of natural springs and the influence spring vents have on fish populations. This study explores fish population characteristics, such as abundance, diversity, and length distributions near headwater spring vents and downstream away from the spring vents within the Rainbow River, located in central Florida. The population characteristics examined are useful to resource managers when evaluating the possible impacts on fish populations from increased groundwater withdrawals and subsequent lower discharge rates into large spring-fed rivers. Initial field observations led to the hypothesis that Lepomis species feed on organisms expelled from the spring vents. Electrofishing and …

The Lady Leaves A Legacy : The Belleview Biltmore And Her Place In Pinellas, Deirdre L. Schuster Jan 2010

The Lady Leaves A Legacy : The Belleview Biltmore And Her Place In Pinellas, Deirdre L. Schuster

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

The Belleview Biltmore Hotel has been a regional icon in Pinellas County, Florida for over one hundred years. Due to its the annual winter residents, the Cleartwater area flourished and prospered ¬. Spring closings led to subdivisions, known historically as colonies, to spring up; becoming known for their prosperity and glamour. As Pinellas County changed economically, the hotel changed, as well, still maintaining its presence, giving the region distinctive air of grandeur of the west coast Florida. Known as the White Queen of the Gulf, the Belleview spawned the Springtime City of Belleair. In a land where reptiles and "critters" …

The Evolution Of The Family, Benjamin E. Hardisty Jan 2010

The Evolution Of The Family, Benjamin E. Hardisty

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Biological levels of complexity usually begin with the cell and extend forward to tissues, organs, organ systems, organisms, populations, community, and end with ecosystems. The family is a unit of biological complexity is missing. As a result, the evolution of altruism and cooperation from a natural selection perspective has not been produced. In the following chapters, I argue that the family is a unit of biological complexity will illuminate such mysteries as the evolution of eusociality, theories of lifetime fitness—sometimes referred to as Lifetime Reproductive Success (LRS)— cultural learning and its importance as a parallel mechanism of inheritance, finally, the …

Stakeholder Perceptions Of The Gulf Of Mexico Grouper And Tilefish Individual Fishing Quota Program, Britni N. Tokotch Jan 2010

Stakeholder Perceptions Of The Gulf Of Mexico Grouper And Tilefish Individual Fishing Quota Program, Britni N. Tokotch

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Individual Fishing Quota Programs (IFQs) are a fishery management method in which percentages of a fishery are allocated to individual fishers, thus specifying how much of that species each fisher can harvest. The purpose of this study is to determine the opinions of stakeholders to the recently implemented Gulf of Mexico grouper and tilefish IFQ program. Many studies have been conducted on the biological implications of IFQ programs but few have focused on social perceptions. Data was obtained through mail-in surveys and analysis consisted of two-sample two-tailed t-test and two-sample proportion testing. Results show that a stakeholder’s perspective on the …

Restoration Of Propeller Scars In Seagrass Meadows Using Sediment Tubes And Design Of A Working Prototype Unmanned Surface Vehicle For Seagrass Studies, Karen Leigh Dreger Jan 2010

Restoration Of Propeller Scars In Seagrass Meadows Using Sediment Tubes And Design Of A Working Prototype Unmanned Surface Vehicle For Seagrass Studies, Karen Leigh Dreger

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Sediment tubes were placed in the unvegetated trenches created in seagrass meadows by boat propellers. The sediment tubes facilitated the natural recovery by stabilizing the sediments and by allowing recruitment of healthy seagrass from the surrounding, undisturbed area. Still images taken of the study sites before and after restoration were assigned a Braun-Blanquet ranking based on the percentage coverage of seagrass. Statistical analysis, using the Mann-Whitney U Test, supported the visual observation that the sediment tubes successfully facilitated natural restoration of the propeller scars. After two years there was an increase in the percent coverage of seagrass at each of …
