This collection of essays reflects on truth and reconciliation commissions (TRCs) and related mechanisms that have taken place in Indonesia, Timor-Leste and Melanesia with a view towards informing other processes that engage historical approaches to resolve conflict. It documents global innovations in TRCs pioneered in this region, as well as the pivotal, trans-national nature of civil society’s influence on them. Rather than providing a legalistic or institutional account, this volume seeks to capture the unique quality of expression fostered by each truth-seeking response.
