Background: The etiology of Parkinson's disease (PD) remains unclear, and environmental risk-factors such as occupation have attracted interest.

Objective: The goal was to investigate occupational complexity in relation to PD.

Methods: We conducted a population-based cohort study based on the Swedish Twin Registry that included 28,778 twins born between 1886 and 1950. We identified 433 PD cases during the study period. Data on occupation were collected from either the 1970 or 1980 Swedish census, and occupational complexity was assessed via a job exposure matrix. Cox proportional hazard regression analyses with age as the underlying time scale were used to assess …

Background: Identification of famous landmarks (FLI), famous faces (FFI) and recognition of facial emotions (FER) is affected early in the course of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). FFI, FER and FLI may represent domain specific tasks relying on activation of distinct regions of the medial temporal lobe, which are affected successively during the course of AD. However, the data on FFI and FER in MCI are controversial and FLI domain remains almost unexplored.

Objectives: To determine whether and how are these three specific domains impaired in head to head comparison of patients with amnestic MCI (aMCI) single domain (SD-aMCI) and multiple domain …

Associations Between Work-Related Stress In Late Midlife, Educational Attainment, And Serious Health Problems In Old Age: A Longitudinal Study With Over 20 Years Of Follow-Up, Charlotta Nilsen, Ross Andel, Stefan Fors, Bettina Meinow, Alexander D. Mattsson, Ingemar Kåreholt Aug 2014

Background: People spend a considerable amount of time at work over the course of their lives, which makes the workplace important to health and aging. However, little is known about the potential long-term effects of work-related stress on late-life health. This study aims to examine work-related stress in late midlife and educational attainment in relation to serious health problems in old age.

Methods: Data from nationally representative Swedish surveys were used in the analyses (n = 1,502). Follow-up time was 20–24 years. Logistic regressions were used to examine work-related stress (self-reported job demands, job control, and job strain) in relation …

Increasing life span and lack of medication for prevention or treatment of progressive dementias will significantly increase the number of individuals with advanced dementia worldwide. Providing optimal care for them will stretch health care resources and will require evaluation of different treatment strategies. This paper is presenting measures that may be used in this patient population. Evaluation of global goals of palliative care may include measuring quality of life by QUALID scale, comfort by DS-DAT scale, and engagement by MPES scale. Symptom control may be achieved by measuring pain by PAINAD or PACSLAC scales, by evaluating behavioral symptoms and their …
