Strength And Erodability Of South Carolina Soils For Embankment Construction, Ke Zhou Jan 2011

Strength And Erodability Of South Carolina Soils For Embankment Construction, Ke Zhou

Theses and Dissertations

When a particular soil from a borrow pit is being used to construct a road embankment, it is important that the strength and erodibility characteristics are known to ensure the embankment has sufficient load capacity and is resistant to erosion by rain or flooding. To evaluate the borrow pit material’s strength and erodibility characteristics, forty five-gallon buckets of soils were collected from fourteen borrow pits in South Carolina. Three buckets were collected at three different locations within each pit.

Fifteen sets of direct shear tests were performed on the selected fifteen buckets of soils. There are six buckets of soils …

3-D Computational Investigation Of Viscoelastic Biofilms Using Gpus, Paisa Seeluangsawat Jan 2011

3-D Computational Investigation Of Viscoelastic Biofilms Using Gpus, Paisa Seeluangsawat

Theses and Dissertations

A biofilm is a slimy colony of bacteria and the materials they secrete, collectively called “extracellular polymeric substances (EPS)”. The EPS consists mostly of bio-polymers, which cross link into a network that behave viscoelastically under deformation. We propose a single-fluid multi-component phase field model of biofilms that captures this behavior, then use numerical simulations on GPUs to investigate the biofilm’s growth and its hydrodynamics properties.

The Rescuer In Danger: A Scholarly Performance Edition Of Franz Xaver Süssmayr's Secular Cantata, Der Retter In Gefahr, Mark Nabholz

Theses and Dissertations

The central objective of this document is the production of a scholarly performance edition of Franz Xaver Süssmayr's secular cantata,Der Retter in Gefahr. The editing was accomplished through careful comparison of the manuscript full score, the manuscript orchestral and choral performing materials used in the first performances, and the published piano-vocal score used by choristers in post-premier performances.

Franz Xaver Süssmayr, whose name is today remembered almost exclusively for his completion of Mozart's Requiem, was a popular and respected Viennese composer in his own right. His opera, Der Spiegel von Arkadien (1794), was performed throughout Europe, and was favorably compared …
