Forecasting With A Real-Time Data Set For Macroeconomists, Tom Stark, Dean D. Croushore Dec 2002

Forecasting With A Real-Time Data Set For Macroeconomists, Tom Stark, Dean D. Croushore

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper discusses how forecasts are affected by the use of real-time data rather than latest-available data. The key issue is this: in the literature on developing forecasting models, new models are put together based on the results they yield using the data set available to the model’s developer. But those are not the data that were available to a forecaster in real time.

How much difference does the vintage of the data make for such forecasts? We explore this issue with a variety of exercises designed to answer this question. In particular, we find that the use of real-time …

Islamic Law Vs. Patriarchal Systems: A Woman's Perspective, Azizah Y. Al-Hibri Oct 2002

Islamic Law Vs. Patriarchal Systems: A Woman's Perspective, Azizah Y. Al-Hibri

Law Faculty Publications

It is best to understand Islam through its core concept,· adalah (justice). This is a complex concept that thoroughly permeates the Islamic worldview. It is not reducible to retributive justice, because it is a higher-order concept whose backbone is the Mizaan (balance and harmony).

Engaging Continuing Education Alumni, James L. Narduzzi Oct 2002

Engaging Continuing Education Alumni, James L. Narduzzi

School of Professional and Continuing Studies Faculty Publications

An effective alumni relations program is the heart of all fundraising efforts. Every college campus in America has an office of alumni affairs. Today, active and engaged alumni create chapters across the country, contribute financially to both annual fund drives and capital campaigns, and generally serve their alma mater in numerous volunteer capacities. However, continuing education programs, both credit and noncredit, have historically existed on the periphery of traditional alumni groups or have been excluded from alumni activities altogether.

A Comparison Of The Low Mode And Monte Carlo Conformational Search Methods, Carol A. Parish, Rosina Lombardi, Kent Sinclair, Emelyn Smith, Alla Goldberg, Melissa Rappleye, Myrianne Dure Oct 2002

A Comparison Of The Low Mode And Monte Carlo Conformational Search Methods, Carol A. Parish, Rosina Lombardi, Kent Sinclair, Emelyn Smith, Alla Goldberg, Melissa Rappleye, Myrianne Dure

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The Low Mode (LM) and Monte Carlo (MC) conformational search methods were compared on three diverse molecular systems; (4R, 5S, 6S, 7R)-hexahydro-5,6-dihydroxy-1,3,4,7-tetrakis(phenylmethyl)-2H-1,3-diazapin-2-one (1), 2-methoxy-2-phenyl-2-triflouromethyl-N-α-methyl benzyl propanamide (2) and a trimeric 39-membered polyazamacrolide (3). We find that either method, or a combination of the methods, is equally efficient at searching the conformational space of the smaller molecular systems while a 50:50 hybrid of Low Mode and Monte Carlo is most efficient at searching the space of the larger molecular system.

Advanced Portfolio Theory: Why Understanding The Math Matters, Tom Arnold Oct 2002

Advanced Portfolio Theory: Why Understanding The Math Matters, Tom Arnold

Finance Faculty Publications

The goal of this paper is to motivate the use of efficient set mathematics for portfolio analysis [as seen in Roll, 1977] in the classroom. Many treatments stop at the two asset portfolio case (avoiding the use of matrix algebra) and an alarming number of treatments rely on illustration and templates to provide a heuristic sense of the material without really teaching how efficient portfolios are generated. This is problematic considering that the benefits of understanding efficient set mathematics go beyond portfolio analysis and into such topics as regression analysis (as demonstrated here).

Internationalization, Globalization, And Capability-Based Strategy, Stephen Tallman, Karin Fladmoe-Lindquist Sep 2002

Internationalization, Globalization, And Capability-Based Strategy, Stephen Tallman, Karin Fladmoe-Lindquist

Management Faculty Publications

Current trends appear to suggest that globally integrated strategies are the wave of the future for many industries, but no theoretically sound, firm-level model explains this situation. International business models explain industry trends from economic perspectives, and organizational theory is beginning to examine the organizing principles of multinational firms, but a gap exists in explaining the strategic motivations of multinational firms as they expand and integrate worldwide. This article develops a capability-driven, as opposed to market-driven, framework of multinational strategy. This contingent framework explains the organizational consequences of international expansion and global integration depending on the capability types, capability strategies, …

The Tadpole Of Proceratophrys Avelinoi (Anura: Leptodactylidae), Rafael O. De Sá, José A. Langone

Biology Faculty Publications

The genus Proceratoprhys is poorly known. It consists of 14 currently recognized species (Frost, 2000) of medium-sized frogs distributed from northeastern Argentina and Paraguay to southeast Amazonia (Rondonia State), eastern and southern Brazil Proceratophrys avelinoi was described from Misiones, Argentina (Mercadal de Barrio and Barrio, 1993). The larval stage of this species is unknown. Herein, we describe the tadpole and the characteristics of the internal oral anatomy of P. avelinoi using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Who Are You, Class Of 2005, Michelle Rahman

Who Are You Class of...Orientation Speeches

“Once again, we express a sincere welcome to the class of 2005 - all 178 of you. I thought it would be appropriate, this morning, to tell you, and the faculty, who you are. Can you guess who is who?”

“You have had some pretty amazing careers pre law school. Can you believe 28 of you have been paralegals? A police officer and a detective sit among you. One of them teaches 4th amendment law and narcotics investigation to area law enforcement officers - as well as marksmanship....but you can feel protected by the Special Agent for the US Department …

Weingarten In The Nonunion Workplace: Looking In The Funhouse Mirror, Ann C. Hodges Jul 2002

Weingarten In The Nonunion Workplace: Looking In The Funhouse Mirror, Ann C. Hodges

Law Faculty Publications

The National Labor Relations Board's extension of the Weingarten decision, granting the right to union representation at pre-disciplinary interviews, to the nonunion workplace was recently upheld by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.- Section 7's, protection of concerted activity and the symmetrical protection of union and nonunion employees alike renders the decision sensible and supportable. Nevertheless, closer examination ofthe decision's consequences suggests that the application ofthe Weingarten right in the nonunion workplace results in a distorted reflection ofthe right's application in the unionized workplace. The situations are not mirror images. Thus, some adjustments to the interpretation ofthe …

Derek Walcott: A Caribbean Life By Bruce King (Book Review), Daryl Cumber Dance Jul 2002

Derek Walcott: A Caribbean Life By Bruce King (Book Review), Daryl Cumber Dance

English Faculty Publications

In Another Life Derek Walcott wrote, "I had entered the house of literature as a houseboy"; Jamaican poet Mervyn Morris signified on this image in his The Pond when he declared, "And these are my rooms now." The journey that Walcott makes from "houseboy" to master/ruler/owner of the house of literature (the Nobel Laureate is frequently acclaimed the greatest poet writing in the English language) is painstakingly detailed in Bruce King's tome Derek Walcott: A Caribbean Life.

Electron Hopping Conductivity And Vapor Sensing Properties Of Flexible Network Polymer Films Of Metal Nanoparticles, Francis P. Zamborini, Michael C. Leopold, Jocelyn F. Hicks, Pawel J. Kulesza, Marcin A. Malik, Royce W. Murray Jun 2002

Electron Hopping Conductivity And Vapor Sensing Properties Of Flexible Network Polymer Films Of Metal Nanoparticles, Francis P. Zamborini, Michael C. Leopold, Jocelyn F. Hicks, Pawel J. Kulesza, Marcin A. Malik, Royce W. Murray

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Films of monolayer protected Au clusters (MPCs) with mixed alkanethiolate and ω-carboxylate alkanethiolate monolayers, linked together in a network polymer by carboxylate-Cu2+-carboxylate bridges, exhibit electronic conductivities (σEL) that vary with both the numbers of methylene segments in the ligands and the bathing medium (N2, liquid or vapor). A chainlength-dependent swelling/contraction of the film's internal structure is shown to account for changes in σEL. The linker chains appear to have sufficient flexibility to collapse and fold with varied degrees of film swelling or dryness. Conductivity is most influenced (exponentially dependent) by the chainlength of the nonlinker (alkanethiolate) ligands, a result consistent …

De Ausencias, Recuerdos Y Redescubrimiento: El Teatro De Agustín Gómez-Arcos, Sharon G. Feldman Jun 2002

De Ausencias, Recuerdos Y Redescubrimiento: El Teatro De Agustín Gómez-Arcos, Sharon G. Feldman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

Dancing For Land: Law-Making And Cultural Performance In Northeastern Brazil, Jan Hoffman French May 2002

Dancing For Land: Law-Making And Cultural Performance In Northeastern Brazil, Jan Hoffman French

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

In Mocambo, cultural practices and performances are being reconfigured and retained in new forms and surrounded by new discourses, revealing modes of local self-fashioning and political action. However, our inquiry should not end there. Thomas Abercrombie (1991:99) argues that whatever meanings might adhere to a certain "traditional" cultural form "are today produced and interpreted, within the (semi-open) semiotic systems produced at locally or situationally specific intercultural loci..., which intersect with national and international systems as significantly as with neighboring town groups." In this essay, I suggest that the demands, interests, and desires of the larger society, as manifested in laws, …
