Exploring The Structure Of Partial Difference Sets With Denniston Parameters, Nicolas Ferree May 2023

Exploring The Structure Of Partial Difference Sets With Denniston Parameters, Nicolas Ferree

Honors Theses

In this work, we investigate the structure of particular partial difference sets (PDS) of size 70 with Denniston parameters in an elementary abelian group and in a nonelementary abelian group. We will make extensive use of character theory in our investigation and ultimately seek to understand the nature of difference sets with these parameters. To begin, we will cover some basic definitions and examples of difference sets and partial difference sets. We will then move on to some basic theorems about partial difference sets before introducing a group ring formalism and using it to explore several important constructions of partial …

The 2015 Ncaa Cost-Of-Attendance Stipend And Its Effects On Institutional Financial Aid Packages, Sara Greene Apr 2023

The 2015 Ncaa Cost-Of-Attendance Stipend And Its Effects On Institutional Financial Aid Packages, Sara Greene

Honors Theses

In 2015, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) allowed “Cost of Attendance” (COA) stipends to be offered to athletic recruits for Division I schools. These stipends are intended to allow schools to grant aid to student-athletes beyond a full-ride scholarship to cover additional costs imposed on student-athletes. These stipends created an opportunity for the “Autonomy” Power 5 programs to utilize a competitive tactic to try to win over the top recruits. There is evidence that these COA stipends have caused an increase in the estimated cost of attendance reported by the university. This paper examines if the COA stipends have …

The Parental Labor Gap: The Impact Of Daycare Access On The Parental Labor Force During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Acacia Wyckoff Apr 2023

The Parental Labor Gap: The Impact Of Daycare Access On The Parental Labor Force During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Acacia Wyckoff

Honors Theses

In the two years since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the landscape for work has shifted dramatically. Many companies and employers switched to telework when the pandemic hit, and many still do not require workers to come into the office. Research suggests these COVID-induced changes have led to a closing of the gap in childcare duties between men and women in households. Comparing parents in positions with telework eligibility versus in-person positions, Heggeness and Suri (2022) found that while telework improved the labor participation rate of mothers slightly, there was still a major gap in labor force participation between mothers and …

Constraining H0 Via Extragalactic Parallax, Nicholas Ferree Apr 2023

Constraining H0 Via Extragalactic Parallax, Nicholas Ferree

Honors Theses

We examine the prospects for measurement of the Hubble parameter 𝐻0 via observation of the secular parallax of other galaxies due to our own motion relative to the cosmic microwave background rest frame. Peculiar velocities make distance measurements to individual galaxies highly uncertain, but a survey sampling many galaxies can still yield a precise 𝐻0 measurement. We use both a Fisher information formalism and simulations to forecast errors in 𝐻0 from such surveys, marginalizing over the unknown peculiar velocities. The optimum survey observes ∼ 102 galaxies within a redshift 𝐻0max = 0.06. The required errors …

Study Of Missing Mass Background In The Clas12 Detector, Jessie Hess, Gerard P. Gilfoyle, Lamya Baashen Apr 2023

Study Of Missing Mass Background In The Clas12 Detector, Jessie Hess, Gerard P. Gilfoyle, Lamya Baashen

Honors Theses

At Jefferson Lab we use the CLAS12 detector to measure the neutron magnetic form factor. An accurate measurement of the CLAS12 neutron detection efficiency (NDE) is required. We use the nuclear reaction → ′+ as a source of tagged neutrons and obtain the NDE from the ratio of expected neutrons to detected ones. We assume the final state consists of ′+ only, use the ′+ information to predict the neutron's position(expected) and then search for that neutron(detected). We select neutrons with the missing mass (MM) technique. We use simulation to validate our methods. We simulated events with the Monte-Carlo …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Rhenium 2,2′-Pyridylnaphthyridine Metal Complexes, Benjamin F. Solomon Apr 2023

Synthesis And Characterization Of Rhenium 2,2′-Pyridylnaphthyridine Metal Complexes, Benjamin F. Solomon

Honors Theses

Rhenium (Re) is a group 7 heavy 5d transition metal in the same family as manganese (Mn) and technetium (Tc). Re-carbonyl complexes are known to be catalysts for many different kinds of reactions from C-C bond formation to reduction reactions like CO2 reduction (CO2RR)1,2. With this in mind, we have prepared a set of six Re-carbonyl complexes of 2,2′-pyridyl-1,6-naphthyridine (1,6- pynap) and 2,2′-pyridyl-1,8-naphthyridine (1,8-pynap), a redox non-innocent ligand containing a bpy moiety as well as an additional aryl nitrogen binding location at which another metal-ligand bond could form. We have synthesized these complexes as precursors …

From Big Farm To Big Pharma: A Differential Equations Model Of Antibiotic-Resistant Salmonella In Industrial Poultry Populations, Rilyn Mckallip Apr 2023

From Big Farm To Big Pharma: A Differential Equations Model Of Antibiotic-Resistant Salmonella In Industrial Poultry Populations, Rilyn Mckallip

Honors Theses

Antibiotics are used in poultry production as prophylaxis, curative treatment, and growth promotion. The first use is as prophylaxis, or prevention of common bacterial diseases. The crowded conditions in concentrated animal feeding operations necessitate management of infectious disease to ensure overall animal health and the profitability of such operations. In these farms, between 20,000 and 125,000 birds are raised in shed-like enclosures [3], with an average of less than one square foot of space per chicken [34]. Antibiotics are currently used in chicken farms to manage and prevent common bacterial diseases such as respiratory and digestive tract infections, as well …

Length Bias Estimation Of Small Businesses Lifetime, Simeng Li Apr 2023

Length Bias Estimation Of Small Businesses Lifetime, Simeng Li

Honors Theses

Small businesses, particularly restaurants, play a crucial role in the economy by generating employment opportunities, boosting tourism, and contributing to the local economy. However, accurately estimating their lifetimes can be challenging due to the presence of length bias, which occurs when the likelihood of sampling any particular restaurant's closure is influenced by its duration in operation. To address the issue, this study conducts goodness-of-fit tests on exponential/gamma family distributions and employs the Kaplan-Meier method to more accurately estimate the average lifetime of restaurants in Carytown. By providing insights into the challenges of estimating the lifetimes of small businesses, this study …

Optimal Method For Reconstructing Polychromatic Maps From Broadband Observations With An Aysmmetric Antenna Pattern, Brianna Cantrall, Emory F. Bunn, Solomon Quinn Apr 2023

Optimal Method For Reconstructing Polychromatic Maps From Broadband Observations With An Aysmmetric Antenna Pattern, Brianna Cantrall, Emory F. Bunn, Solomon Quinn

Honors Theses

Broadband time-ordered data obtained from telescopes with a wavelength-dependent, asymmetric beam pattern can be used to extract maps at multiple wavelengths from a single scan. This technique is especially useful when collecting data on cosmic phenomena such as the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation, as it provides the ability to separate the CMB signal from foreground contaminants. We develop a method to determine the optimal linear combinations of wavelengths (“colors”) that can be reconstructed for a given telescope design and the number of colors that are measurable with high signal-to-noise ratio. The optimal colors are found as eigenvectors of a …

The Commutant Of The Fourier–Plancherel Transform, Brianna Cantrall Apr 2023

The Commutant Of The Fourier–Plancherel Transform, Brianna Cantrall

Honors Theses

One can see that this matrix is unitary and has eigenvalues {1,−i,−1, I}, each of infinite multiplicity. Throughout the remainder of this thesis, we will convince the reader that the above linear transformation is actually the Fourier transform. We will compute the commutant, as well as its invariant subspaces. The key to do this relies on the Hermite polynomials. Why do we recast the Fourier transform from its well-known and well studied integral form to the matrix form shown above? As we will see, the matrix form allows us to efficiently discover the operator theory of the Fourier transform obfuscated …

Synthesis And Study Of Unsymmetrical Bidentate Bis(Phosphino)Pyrrole Ligands And Their Transition Metal Complexes, Julia F. Vidlak Apr 2022

Synthesis And Study Of Unsymmetrical Bidentate Bis(Phosphino)Pyrrole Ligands And Their Transition Metal Complexes, Julia F. Vidlak

Honors Theses

Our laboratory has reported the synthesis and characterization of a broad library of unsymmetrical bidentate bis(phosphino)pyrrole (BPP) ancillary ligands for use in nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. The electronic and steric properties of nickel complexes bearing these ligands are examined, and our data support the hypothesis that these ligands produce nickel complexes with electron-deficient metal centers. The syntheses of (BPP)Ni(o-tolyl)Cl precatalysts for utilization in nickel-catalyzed Buchwald-Hartwig Amination are described, and preliminary reactivity studies reveal that (BPP)Ni(o-tolyl)Cl precatalysts are effective in promoting C–N cross-coupling reactions. Finally, we report steric measurements and electronic properties obtained from computed (BPP)NiCl2 and (BPP)Ni(CO)2 complexes, respectively. Additional reactivity …

Estimation Of Pure B Power In Polarized Cmb Data Via Gibbs Sampling., Joseph Sterling Apr 2022

Estimation Of Pure B Power In Polarized Cmb Data Via Gibbs Sampling., Joseph Sterling

Honors Theses

In the search for effective processes to estimate E and B spectra from polarized data, Gibbs Sampling has proven to be a powerful method. In the search for B modes, it is essential to avoid a false positive detection due to contamination from the larger E component. It is therefore of interest to combine Gibbs sampling with methods to “purify” the B modes, ensuring that a B-mode detection is robust. This goal can be achieved by compelling the Gibbs Sampler to estimate a pure B spectrum. The method we chose to implement involves an artificially inflated E spectrum, which “forces” …

Synthesis Of Β,Β-Disubstituted Styrenes Via Trimethylsilyl Trifluoromethanesulfonate-Promoted Aldehyde-Aldehyde Aldol Addition-Deformylative Elimination., Grant J. Dixon, Michael R. Rodriguez, Tyler G. Chong, Kevin Y. Kim, C. Wade Downey Jan 2022

Synthesis Of Β,Β-Disubstituted Styrenes Via Trimethylsilyl Trifluoromethanesulfonate-Promoted Aldehyde-Aldehyde Aldol Addition-Deformylative Elimination., Grant J. Dixon, Michael R. Rodriguez, Tyler G. Chong, Kevin Y. Kim, C. Wade Downey

Chemistry Faculty Publications

In the presence of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf) and 2,6-lutidine, α,α-disubstituted aldehydes condense with electron-rich aromatic aldehydes to yield β, β- disubstituted styrenes. More electron-rich aromatic aldehydes react more rapidly and in higher yield. Preliminary results suggest that the reaction may proceed via the ionization and formal deformylation of an aldol intermediate.

Cosmological Inflation In N-Dimensional Gaussian Random Fields With Algorithmic Data Compression, Connor A. Painter May 2021

Cosmological Inflation In N-Dimensional Gaussian Random Fields With Algorithmic Data Compression, Connor A. Painter

Honors Theses

The leading modern theories of cosmological inflation are increasingly multi-dimensional. The “inflaton field” φ that has been postulated to drive accelerating expansion in the very early universe has a corresponding potential function V , the details of which, such as the number of dimensions and shape, have yet to be specified. We consider a natural hypothesis that V ought to be maximally random. We realize this idea by defining the V as a Gaussian random field in some number N of dimensions. We repeatedly simulate of the evolution of φ given a set of conditions on the “landscape” of V …

An Introduction To Obstacle Problems, Calvin Reedy Apr 2021

An Introduction To Obstacle Problems, Calvin Reedy

Honors Theses

The obstacle problem can be used to predict the shape of an elastic membrane lying over an obstacle in a domain Ω. In this paper we introduce and motivate a mathematical formulation for this problem, and give an example to demonstrate the need to search for solutions in non-classical settings. We then introduce Sobolev spaces as the proper setting for solutions, and prove that unique solutions exist in W1,2(Ω).

Stereochemical Control In Suzuki Cross Coupling Reactions Of Acyclic (Z)-Beta-Haloacroleins, William Carrick Apr 2021

Stereochemical Control In Suzuki Cross Coupling Reactions Of Acyclic (Z)-Beta-Haloacroleins, William Carrick

Honors Theses

Beta-chloroenals are readily accessible substances and are efficient precursors for a variety of heterocyclic compounds. Suzuki type cross-coupling reactions of such compounds with arylboronic acids yield ,-diarylacroleins with control of stereochemistry. The oxidation of these enals to the corresponding acids and subsequent oxidative lactonization leads to formation of the respective coumarins. The chemistry involved in these transformations with special attention to stereochemistry of the Suzuki coupling reaction will be discussed. A full NMR analysis involving 1H, 13C, COSY, NOESY, HSQC, and HMBC was performed to unambiguously confirm the structure and show that the reaction proceeds with retention of stereochemistry.

Overdose Prevention Sites Placement Informed By Simulation, Jing Dong Apr 2021

Overdose Prevention Sites Placement Informed By Simulation, Jing Dong

Honors Theses

In Philadelphia, people are experiencing the greatest opioid crisis in a century. Plac- ing the Overdose Prevention Site (OPS) can alleviate this crisis. However, the journey to the successful launch of the first OPS in the USA is rough. It was first accused of having a collision with federal drug laws. While Safehouse won the lawsuit and the OPS was judged to be legal in 2020, other pressure rose afterward such as the against from the public and the COVID19, which delayed the plan to open the OPS. Without solid research on the effectiveness of OPS, we thought it is …

Understanding Model Reasoning In Automated Speech Systems: Implementing A Prototype Explanation System Using The Lime Method, Vadim Kudlay Apr 2021

Understanding Model Reasoning In Automated Speech Systems: Implementing A Prototype Explanation System Using The Lime Method, Vadim Kudlay

Honors Theses

The field of voice processing has seen great advancements thanks in part to the rise of deep learning. However, the application of these deep learning techniques with an audio input space leads to an interesting result not commonly found when dealing with other input domains. Namely, common techniques for generating auditory adversarial samples using gradient-based optimization have been observed to have extremely low transferability among even the same model structure. This implies an inherent difference in the latent representations of audio samples that may be worth investigating in the pursuit of a more resilient and interpretable voice processing framework. Our …

Adhering Homogeneous Molecular Electrocatalysts Entrapped In Micelles To Electrode Surfaces, Emily Kuhlmann Apr 2021

Adhering Homogeneous Molecular Electrocatalysts Entrapped In Micelles To Electrode Surfaces, Emily Kuhlmann

Honors Theses

Heterogeneous catalysts are important to industrial use; however, mechanistic studies are difficult because they lack the easy tunability of homogeneous catalysts. One solution could be to immobilize homogeneous catalysts using micelles while maintaining catalytic properties and activities.

Cosmological Inflation In N-Dimensional Gaussian Random Fields With Algorithmic Data Compression, Connor Painter Apr 2021

Cosmological Inflation In N-Dimensional Gaussian Random Fields With Algorithmic Data Compression, Connor Painter

Arts & Sciences Student Symposium

The leading theories of inflation are increasingly multi-dimensional. In this project, we consider a natural hypothesis that the inflaton potential, the theorized mechanism behind accelerated expansion in the early universe, is maximally random. We present a program that simulates random potentials, solves equations of motion, and catalogues predictions for observable quantities, such as perturbation spectra.

Emerald Ash Borer And The Application Of Biological Control In Virginia, Shuheng Chen, Yihui Wu, Shengjie Liu Apr 2021

Emerald Ash Borer And The Application Of Biological Control In Virginia, Shuheng Chen, Yihui Wu, Shengjie Liu

Arts & Sciences Student Symposium

The emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis; EAB) is an invasive wood-boring beetle whose larvae feed on ash phloem. After only 1-5 years of infestation, the larvae create extensive tunnels under the bark that disrupt the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients, which eventually girdles and kills the tree. Since 2008, EAB has spread to all but the eastern-most counties in Virginia. Bological control is one strategy to limit EAB populations. In this project we study control by native agents (woodpeckers) and imported agents (parasitoid wasps).

Mathematical models of host-parasitoid interactions and simulations based on both models and field studies …

The School Mathematics Study Group: Lessons In Mathematics Education, Madeline Polhill Apr 2021

The School Mathematics Study Group: Lessons In Mathematics Education, Madeline Polhill

Arts & Sciences Student Symposium

This work argues that the "new math" project called the School Mathematics Study Group offers a valuable case study for mathematics educators seeking to venture into the future better informed about both the successes and failures of previous projects. Understanding this project requires recognizing that the School Mathematics Study Group was wholly a product of the forces—personal, educational, mathematical, and political—that shaped it. Admittedly, some of the SMSG's shortcomings resulted from its members' lack of understanding of the changes needed in mathematics education. Still, the majority of the SMSG's public vilification resulted through no fault of its own, but rather …

Fact-Checking Of Claims From The English Wikipedia Using Evidence In The Wild, Aalok Sathe Apr 2021

Fact-Checking Of Claims From The English Wikipedia Using Evidence In The Wild, Aalok Sathe

Honors Theses

Automated fact checking is a task in the domain of Natural Language Processing that deals with the verification of claims using evidence. Fact checking is becoming increasingly important as large amounts of human-generated information accumulate online. In the recent past, our society has witnessed large-scale spread of disinformation via the internet that has time and again led to noticeable disruptions in the fabric of society. Fact-checking would help mitigate the spread of disinformation by allowing large magnitudes of content to be automatically evaluated for disinformation. In this work, we construe and tackle multiple subtasks of fact checking using labeled data …

Bert Argues: How Attention Informs Argument Mining, Ting Chen Apr 2021

Bert Argues: How Attention Informs Argument Mining, Ting Chen

Honors Theses

Argument mining is the automatic identification and extraction of structure from argumentative language. Previous works have constrained the argument structure to forming strictly trees in order to utilize efficient tree-specific techniques. However, arguments in the wild are unlikely to exhibit this constrained structure. Given the recent trend of fine-tuning large pre-trained models to reach state of the art performance on a variety of Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks, we look to leverage the power of these deep contextualized word embeddings towards the task of non-tree argument mining. In this paper, we introduce a new pipeline which utilizes pre-trained BERT based …

One-Pot Synthesis Of 2-Methylfurans From 3- (Trimethylsilyl)Propargyl Acetates Promoted By Trimethylsilyl Trifluoromethanesulfonate, Danielle E. Sklar, Alex V. Helbling, Yiqi Liu, C. Wade Downey Jan 2021

One-Pot Synthesis Of 2-Methylfurans From 3- (Trimethylsilyl)Propargyl Acetates Promoted By Trimethylsilyl Trifluoromethanesulfonate, Danielle E. Sklar, Alex V. Helbling, Yiqi Liu, C. Wade Downey

Chemistry Faculty Publications

In the presence of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf) and triethylamine, 3-(trimethylsilyl)propargyl carboxylates undergo a one-pot alkylation-cyclization- desilylation reaction with ketones to produce 2-methylfurans. Alkylation at 0 °C in methylene chloride, followed by acid-catalyzed cyclization at room temperature, provides the furans in 52-86% yield. Cyclization and desilylation appear to be promoted by triflic acid generated in situ from the exposure of the reaction mixture to water upon completion of the initial substitution reaction.

Friedel–Crafts Addition Of Indoles To Nitrones Promoted By Trimethylsilyl Trifluoromethanesulfonate, Zachary Z. Oracheff, Helen L. Xia, Christopher D. Poff, Scott E. Isaacson, C. Wade Downey Jan 2021

Friedel–Crafts Addition Of Indoles To Nitrones Promoted By Trimethylsilyl Trifluoromethanesulfonate, Zachary Z. Oracheff, Helen L. Xia, Christopher D. Poff, Scott E. Isaacson, C. Wade Downey

Chemistry Faculty Publications

N-alkylindoles undergo Friedel–Crafts addition to aryl and secondary alkyl nitrones in the presence of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate and a trialkylamine to produce 3-(1- (silyloxyamino)alkyl)indoles. Spontaneous conversion to the bisindolyl(aryl)methanes, which is thermodynamically favored for nitrones derived from aromatic aldehydes, is suppressed under the reaction conditions. The silyloxyamino group can be deprotected with tetrabutylammonium fluoride to yield the hydroxylamine.

The Surface Diffusion And The Willmore Flow For Uniformly Regular Hypersurfaces, Jeremy Lecrone, Yuanzhen Shao, Gieri Simonett Dec 2020

The Surface Diffusion And The Willmore Flow For Uniformly Regular Hypersurfaces, Jeremy Lecrone, Yuanzhen Shao, Gieri Simonett

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider the surface diffusion and Willmore flows acting on a general class of (possibly non–compact) hypersurfaces parameterized over a uniformly regular reference manifold possessing a tubular neighborhood with uniform radius. The surface diffusion and Willmore flows each give rise to a fourth–order quasilinear parabolic equation with nonlinear terms satisfying a specific singular structure. We establish well–posedness of both flows for initial surfaces that are C1+α–regular and parameterized over a uniformly regular hypersurface. For the Willmore flow, we also show long–term existence for initial surfaces which are C1+α–close to a sphere, and we prove …
