Urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by Escherichia coli create a large burden on healthcare and frequently lead to recurrent infections. Part of the success of E. coli as an uropathogenic bacterium can be attributed to its ability to form quiescent intracellular reservoirs in bladder cells and its persistence after antibiotic treatment. Cranberry juice and related products have been used for the prevention of UTIs with varying degrees of success. In this study, a group of cranberry pectic oligosaccharides (cPOS) were found to both inhibit quiescence and reduce the population of persister cells formed by the uropathogenic strain, CFT073. This is …

Research Papers by Undergraduate Students
This paper used material culture methodology to examine selected women's fashions from the 1960s housed in URI's Historic Textile and Costume Collection. The focus was on innovative materials. Included are three paper dresses, a metallic dress, and a pair of white vinyl go-go boots.

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications
Background and objectives Obtaining consistent efficacy beyond 12–24 hours with local anesthetics, including extended-release formulations, has been a challenging goal. Inflammation resulting from surgery lowers the pH of affected tissues, reducing neuronal penetration of local anesthetics. HTX-011, an investigational, nonopioid, extended-release dual-acting local anesthetic combining bupivacaine and low-dose meloxicam, was developed to reduce postsurgical pain through 72 hours using novel extended-release polymer technology. Preclinical studies and a phase II clinical trial were conducted to confirm the mechanism of action of HTX-011.
Methods In a validated postoperative pain pig model and a phase II bunionectomy trial, the analgesic effects of HTX-011, …

Housing Prices And Household Savings: Evidence From Urban China, Weida Kuang, Tao Li, Jing Jian Xiao
Housing Prices And Household Savings: Evidence From Urban China, Weida Kuang, Tao Li, Jing Jian Xiao
Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications
Based on precautionary saving motives, this research develops a three-period life-cycle model to manifest the impact of housing prices on household savings in urban China. The theoretical model illustrates that the expected appreciation of housing prices at a household’s middle age leads to the increase in household savings at a household’s young age. Second, household savings at a household’s young age are positively associated with both expected educational and medical expenditures in a household’s middle age and pension expenditures at a household’s old age. Third, the expected housing prices crowd out educational and medical expenditures at a household’s middle age. …
Mapping Spatial Variations Of Structure And Function Parameters For Forest Condition Assessment Of The Changbai Mountain National Nature Reserve, Lin Chen, Chunying Ren, Bai Zhang, Zongming Wang, Yeqiao Wang
Mapping Spatial Variations Of Structure And Function Parameters For Forest Condition Assessment Of The Changbai Mountain National Nature Reserve, Lin Chen, Chunying Ren, Bai Zhang, Zongming Wang, Yeqiao Wang
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
Forest condition is the baseline information for ecological evaluation and management. The National Forest Inventory of China contains structural parameters, such as canopy closure, stand density and forest age, and functional parameters, such as stand volume and soil fertility. Conventionally forest conditions are assessed through parameters collected from field observations, which could be costly and spatially limited. It is crucial to develop modeling approaches in mapping forest assessment parameters from satellite remote sensing. This study mapped structure and function parameters for forest condition assessment in the Changbai Mountain National Nature Reserve (CMNNR). The mapping algorithms, including statistical regression, random forests, …

Nanostructured Electrochemical Sensor For Detection Of Seawater Nutrients, Bernard Munge
Nanostructured Electrochemical Sensor For Detection Of Seawater Nutrients, Bernard Munge
Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering
Nitrite salts are widely used in industrial manufacturing and over fertilization can lead to the contamination of surface water and groundwater. For example, nitrites can cause the transformation of normal hemoglobin to methemoglobin, leading to loss of hemoglobin’s ability to transport oxygen and can also lead to accelerated algae growth and eutrophication of large bodies of water. There is an unmet need for portable, reliable and economical sensor for nitrites due to its ubiquitous nature and toxicity. Herein, we demonstrate the use of multi-wall carbon nanotubes screen printed electrodes (MWCNT-SPE) that have the capability for individual determination of nitrite anions …

Search For Gravitational Waves From Scorpius X-1 In The Second Advanced Ligo Observing Run With An Improved Hidden Markov Model, Robert Coyne, Et Al
Physics Faculty Publications
We present results from a semicoherent search for continuous gravitational waves from the low-mass x-ray binary Scorpius X-1, using a hidden Markov model (HMM) to track spin wandering. This search improves on previous HMM-based searches of LIGO data by using an improved frequency domain matched filter, the J-statistic, and by analyzing data from Advanced LIGO’s second observing run. In the frequency range searched, from 60 to 650 Hz, we find no evidence of gravitational radiation. At 194.6 Hz, the most sensitive search frequency, we report an upper limit on gravitational wave strain (at 95% confidence) of h95%0=3.47×10−25 when marginalizing over …

Social Media Platforms For Small Fashion Businesses, Madison Noonan
Social Media Platforms For Small Fashion Businesses, Madison Noonan
Major Papers by Master of Science Students
This major paper examined the effectiveness of social media platforms for small fashion businesses. The social media platforms investigated were Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and Pinterest. Many factors such as target market, product mix, and budget need to considered. Once these factors are clearly defined, the information in the paper can be applied to the small fashion business.
