An Examination Of Golf Magazines For Health Belief Model Applications And Skin Cancer Protection Advice, Beth A. Bailey Jan 2020

An Examination Of Golf Magazines For Health Belief Model Applications And Skin Cancer Protection Advice, Beth A. Bailey

Open Access Master's Theses

Skin cancer rates are elevated among men, especially men who participate in outdoor sports, such as golf. Male golfers who play regularly are particularly susceptible to skin cancers because of the length of ultraviolet radiation exposure during game time, lack of adequate skin protection, plus their cumulative lifetime exposure is higher than non-golfers. Drawing on the health belief model, the purpose of the research was to analyze golf magazines from two decades for editorial content that communicates the increased risk of skin cancer for male golfers as well as protective measures they can undertake to prevent ultraviolent solar radiation exposure, …

Violence refers to any act or behavior that causes harm (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2018), and is considered a serious public health issue. Violence puts a burden on individuals, families, and communities, which in turn cause physical and psychological damage. Kingian Nonviolence Conflict Reconciliation Program (Kingian Nonviolence) is an introductory program that serves to address the root causal conditions of violence within oneself and the greater community. Kingian Nonviolence operates on the principle that nonviolence is the only antidote for violence. Core concepts discussed in Kingian Nonviolence include: violence, nonviolence versus non(-hyphen)violence, compassion, values, conflict, conflict resolution, …

Writing Irish America: Communal Memory And The Narrative Of Nation In Diaspora, Beth O'Leary Anish Jan 2017

Writing Irish America: Communal Memory And The Narrative Of Nation In Diaspora, Beth O'Leary Anish

Open Access Dissertations

In this project I trace Irish ethnic identity formation in the United States and the creation of the Irish-American narrative throughout the twentieth century as reflected in Irish-American life-writing—autobiographical or at least semi-autobiographical fiction and memoir—from just after World War II to the early 2000s. All of the works included in this study examine in some way the question of what it means to be Irish in America. The authors in this study collectively show how an Irish identity was given up in America and eventually pieced back together again. Some of the original elements remained, but others were forgotten, …

Identity, Awareness, Action: A Study Of White Anti-Racist Faculty Praxis At Two Predominantly White Institutions, David Brian Hayes Jan 2017

Identity, Awareness, Action: A Study Of White Anti-Racist Faculty Praxis At Two Predominantly White Institutions, David Brian Hayes

Open Access Dissertations

Despite decades of research into the racial construct known as whiteness (e.g., Roediger, 1991; Frankenberg, 1993; Leonardo, 2002), as well as on white privilege and racism within predominantly white institutions (PWIs) (e.g., Harper & Hurtado, 2007), little research exists exploring the work of white faculty who confront racism in teaching, research, or service. In this study, I applied a Critical White Studies (Delgado & Stefancic, 1997) analytical frame to a Constructivist Grounded Theory (Charmaz, 2006) study of white anti-racist faculty in two predominantly white institutions within a state higher education system. The study used interviews with 11 white faculty members …

Open Access Dissertations

More than 1.4 million Americans reside in long term care facilities across the United States. Social and professional relationships are an integral component of everyday life within these environments. Few studies have systematically examined positive relationships that exist between residents and nursing assistants in long term care. A focused ethnography of a nursing home, one known for the quality of life experienced by its residents and located in the northeastern United States, was used to examine the nature of (1) interactions (2) positive relationships (their development and maintenance) between residents and nursing assistants, and (3) supportive environmental factors. Peace House …

Functions Of Urban Ethnic Enclaves With A Focus On South Boston’S Ethnic Irish Enclave In A Historical Perspective, Emaly A. Bryson Jan 2003

Functions Of Urban Ethnic Enclaves With A Focus On South Boston’S Ethnic Irish Enclave In A Historical Perspective, Emaly A. Bryson

Open Access Master's Theses

South Boston, Massachusetts is famous for its ethnic Irish population. From initial Irish emigration in the early 1800's, to the mass exodus during the potato famine in mid 1800's, the Irish have settled in South Boston. Initial immigrants to Boston were fleeing persecution from English land barons and hoped to find a better life in America. Yet, much of the early history of the enclave is underscored by the harsh treatment of the ruling Brahmin class. The Irish struggled to find jobs, housing and practice their Catholic faith within the confines of an elite Protestant majority. Slowly enclave residents broke …

The Relationship Between Ethnicity And Self-Concept In Italian-Americans, Paul Robert Cassarino Jan 1982

The Relationship Between Ethnicity And Self-Concept In Italian-Americans, Paul Robert Cassarino

Open Access Dissertations

It is the purpose of this research to investigate the relationship of ethnicity and self-concept. Relationship here means that self-concept varies with ethnicity even when other variables, such as social class, age, etc. are similar.

In the literature review, the argument is developed that perceptions of self are in part formulated from the perception of oneself as being ethnic or having a particular ethnic heritage. These ethnic perceptions include belief systems, patterns of emotions, expectations, perceptions of the environment, sense of reality, interpretive schemes for interacting in the world, etc. In the development of self-perception or self-concept, these perceptions that …

A Revitalization Study Of Merrimac Square - Merrimac, Massachusetts, Diane Lee Flint

Open Access Master's Theses

The Town of Merrimac is located approximately 35 miles north of Boston on the New Hampshire border. Merrimac developed as a small industrial town and became prosperous during the latter part of the nineteenth century, as a center for the manufacture of horsedrawn carriages.

Merrimac Square, the area selected for study, was the focus of activity during these years. Established on the Square were carriage finding houses, the carriage shops themselves, an elegant town hall building donated by a well-to-do native and many fine homes of the carriage business entrepreneurs. Today, many of these structures remain, strongly reinforcing Merrimac's historic …

A Measurement Of The Improvement Of Attitudes Toward Death In Middle School/Junior High School Students, Mary Catherine Holland Canole Jan 1978

A Measurement Of The Improvement Of Attitudes Toward Death In Middle School/Junior High School Students, Mary Catherine Holland Canole

Open Access Master's Theses

Children today have a limited knowledge and experience with death in our culture. This lack of experience has resulted in the tremendous fear of the unknown - death. Death education has been an attempt to reduce a child's anxiety toward death. Since it was uncertain whether death education was effective with young children this study was developed to test whether students being exposed to a death education program would have a better attitude toward death than students who had not had any death education. Death education hopefully improves one's attitude toward death.

One hundred and forty-six randomly selected students were …

The Paper Constitutions Of The English Interregnum 1647-1660, Stuart Edward Prall

Open Access Master's Theses

King Charles I had ruled over the Kingdom of England from 1629 -1640 without calling a meeting of Parliament. During the period of his "personal rule", trouble broke out in Scotland as a result of the King's attempt to impose the Church of England upon the Presbyterian Scots. To obtain funds to wage a war, Charles called on Parliament. This Parliament was more interested in reforming the government than supplying the king with funds. Rebellion in Ireland necessitated the calling out of the militia.

Until this point, the reforms of Parliament had been passed in the ordinary constitutional manner. Now, …
