Very high energy resolution photoemission experiments on high quality samples of optimally doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ show new features in the low-energy electronic excitations. A marked change in the binding energy and temperature dependence of the near-nodal scattering rates is observed near the superconducting transition temperature, TC. The temperature slope of the scattering rate measured at low energy shows a discontinuity at TC. In the superconducting state, coherent excitations are found with the scattering rates showing a cubic dependence on frequency and temperature. The superconducting gap has a d-wave magnitude …

Many students think of measurement as a set of procedures, for example, lining up a ruler with an object, and stating the number on the ruler that corresponds with one end of the object. This may be one reason that measurement is typically one of the weakest areas of mathematical achievement on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (Struchens, Martin, & Kenney, 2003). To combat students’ weaknesses in measurement, we suggest that in the early grades they need to develop a feel for standard measurement units, such as inches and feet, and become familiar with real world referents that correspond …

Teachers in courses which involve probability and statistics are always looking for situations in which the Fundamental Principle of Counting (FPC) can be exemplified. We shall present an example involving a coffee vending machine at a highway rest stop.
