The Human Female Figure As An Affected Image In Modern Art, Gregory G. Chyle Dec 1973

The Human Female Figure As An Affected Image In Modern Art, Gregory G. Chyle

Theses and Dissertations

The title, The Human Female Figure as an Affected Image in Modern Art expresses the principal hypothesis of this study, but definition of terms included in this title is necessary to fully understand my intentions. The image of the human female figure depicted in a work of art is the subject of my concern. How the figure is represented, through various attitudes and appearances, assumed or implied, determines how the viewers interpretation of this image is affected .

Although a clearly defined time period is not critical to this study, Modern Art will be defined as that art falling into …

Distribution Of S-Adenosylhomocysteine Hydrolase, S-Adenosylhomocysteine Nucleosidase, S-Ribosylhomocysteine Cleavage Enzyme And Homoserine Dehydratase In Various Species, Robert D. Walker Dec 1973

Distribution Of S-Adenosylhomocysteine Hydrolase, S-Adenosylhomocysteine Nucleosidase, S-Ribosylhomocysteine Cleavage Enzyme And Homoserine Dehydratase In Various Species, Robert D. Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Microorganisms, plants and the major organs from cold and warm blooded vertebrates ware assayed for the presence of S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase, S-adenosylhomocysteine nucleosidase, S-ribosylhomocysteine cleavage enzyme and homoserine dehydratase.

S-Adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase was found in all yeasts and plants assayed and in the livers of all cold blooded vertebrates assayed except the Polyodon spathula (Paddlafish). Liver extracts from all warm blooded vertebrates except the Odocoileus hemionus (Mule deer), Odocoileus virginianus (Whitetail deer) and Homo sapiens (human) were also found to possess S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase. This enzyme was also found in the spleens of the Ictalurus punctatus (Channel cat), Perca flavescens (Yellow perch) and …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Number Of Distinctive-Feature Errors And Judged Speech Defectiveness, Laura Lynne Krowchenko Dec 1973

A Study Of The Relationship Between Number Of Distinctive-Feature Errors And Judged Speech Defectiveness, Laura Lynne Krowchenko

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if judged speech defectiveness is systematically based on the distance between the target and the substituted phoneme, as measured by the number of distinctive-feature errors occurring in a phoneme substitution. Eighteen passages of continuous speech, arranged in paired comparisons, were presented to fifty subjects. Fifteen passages were prepared so that each contained ten phoneme substitutions of one, two, three, four, or five feature errors. Three passages were articulated correctly. Forty-five pairs of passages were played for the subjects who x?ere required to judge which passage of a pair was the more defective. …

Maze Acquisition In The Zinc Deficient Rat, Paige M. Lokken Dec 1973

Maze Acquisition In The Zinc Deficient Rat, Paige M. Lokken

Theses and Dissertations

Interest in the role played by trace minerals in brain development and the subsequent effect on learning is recent. Biochemically a great number of studies on zinc have been done, but in only one other laboratory have the behavioral consequences of a zinc-deficiency been looked at. The present study attempts to partially replicate the previous studies and to explore the behavioral effect of a zinc-deficiency in a different manner. In the postnatal study, dams were made zinc-deficient from the day of delivery until weaning of the pups occurred (21 days). Paired animals were fed the same amount of food as …

Sensory Approach To Creative Writing: A Study Of The Effect Of Increasing The Number Of Types Of Sensory Stimuli Intended To Motivate Children To Write Creatively, Richard P. King

Theses and Dissertations

The Problem: The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine if increasing the number of types of sensory stimulation prior to a writing experience would help children to write more creatively and to write longer stories.

The secondary purpose was to investigate the use of the combination of an intelligence test score plus three measures of creativity as a predictor of creative writing ability.

The Procedure: The sample for this study consisted of randomly selected fourth, sixth, and eighth grade students (N = 300) of the Silver Bay area, a community of 4000 in 'Northeastern Minnesota. These subjects were …

Clustering And Subjective Organization Of Free Recall Learning, Sandra Gail Harrell Fenner Dec 1973

Clustering And Subjective Organization Of Free Recall Learning, Sandra Gail Harrell Fenner

Theses and Dissertations

Two concepts, clustering and subjective organization, have figured prominently in theoretical explanations of free recall learning. With lists composed of categorized words (e.g., animals, vegetables, occupations), subjects tend to order recall by categories, which tendency is called clustering. There is much experimental evidence for a relationship between clustering and amount recalled, as recall and clustering have been shown to increase with repeated presentations of the material. Curiously, there is some evidence that the degree of clustering seems to be uncorrelated with recall scores, that is, subjects who cluster strongly do not recall more words than subjects who cluster less strongly …

Subjects for this study were fifty undergraduate students enrolled in Speech Pathology and Audio! jgy 232 at the …

Natural And Cultural Controls Of Water Quality Along The Devils Lake Chain, North Dakota, And Biological Characteristics Of The Two Terminal Lakes In The Chain, Carlene Ellen Woods Farmer Dec 1973

Natural And Cultural Controls Of Water Quality Along The Devils Lake Chain, North Dakota, And Biological Characteristics Of The Two Terminal Lakes In The Chain, Carlene Ellen Woods Farmer

Theses and Dissertations

Chemical analysis of water from 17 sites along the Devils Lake chain, starting with Mauvais Coulee and ending with East Stump Lake, and plankton and benthic analyses of East and West Stump Lakes, the two terminal lakes in the chain, were conducted from September 1969 to December 1972. A great degree of variation occurred along the chain with mineral content ranging from a minimum in groundwater to a maximum in East Stump Lake. Variations between lakes in the chain arise from physical characteristics such as isolation, permeability of basins, and reinundation.

Greatest mineralization r.as occurred in those lakes without outlets …

Higher Mathematics Applied To Business Decisions, John W. Gillett Oct 1973

Higher Mathematics Applied To Business Decisions, John W. Gillett

Theses and Dissertations

The use of mathematics in the study of business management, economics and accounting is apparently becoming more and more relevant to the students of these chosen fields. Although many faculty members in these fields learned their mathematics in graduate school and therefore have seen the need for higher mathematics, students wonder why they have to take a course in higher mathematics.

In most instances the answer is not forthcoming in the math course itself. Mathematicians are not economists or accountants. The consequence of these simple facts is that the students conclude that mathematics is just an intellectual exercise that they …
