A Content Analysis Of Editorials In Four North Dakota Newspapers, Robert R. Pyle
Theses and Dissertations
This study is a content analysis of editorials in the four North Dakota newspapers. Its purpose is to determine the amount of conflict- oriented editorial content of each paper. A representative sample of each of the four papers was chosen for analysis. Two types of content analysis were performed to determine what subjects were discussed, and to determine the direction (whether conflict or cooperation) of the subject matter. Three judges were used to code a sample of the material, and inter-agreement percentages were calculated for each coder. The results of the subject matter and directional analysis are presented in tables …
Painting As A Public Art, Wayne R. Juhala
Painting As A Public Art, Wayne R. Juhala
Theses and Dissertations
The artist throughout history has had difficulty in communicating to the mass of people. Most art has been made for special classes of people who represent authority. There has always been a need for a meaningful visual communication with a"VI the people because there is a need for a fine art which can fill the gap left by the passing of folk art. Painting is the easiest of the art forms for the public to understand and grasp because it has the greatest storytelling possibilities. There is a real need for artists to try and communicate with the broad mass …

Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to design an instrument that would measure the tumbling and apparatus skill proficiency of male physical education majors of the University of North Dakota.
Two groups were used in the study. An experimental group of fifteen subjects, which was taking the required tumbling and apparatus course five times weekly; and a control group of ten subjects that had taken the same class the semester before, were utilized in this study.
The two groups were given the initial test for purposes of determining item validity. The experimental group was also given a retest to determine …

A Comparative Study Of Fitness Development Involving Two Methods Of Administering Physical Activity To Improve Fitness, Neil M. Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to discover a method of administering exercises in a graded physical education program that would not use excessive class time for the calisthenic period. Twenty-four elementary school children from the Benjamin Franklin Elementary School in Grand Forks, North Dakota, participated in the study. Experimental Group One took part in a graded program which included types of calisthenics within the activity. Experimental Group Two exercised for twelve minutes before regular activity. The Grand Forks Physical Fitness Test was used to measure levels of physical development.
Two statistical comparisons were: (1) a within group comparison between …
Unionism In The Field Of Banking, William Gardiner
Unionism In The Field Of Banking, William Gardiner
Theses and Dissertations
In the forty-five years since the first labor bank was chartered, unions have enjoyed little success in organizing bank employees. Unions now face declining membership unless white-collar workers can be convinced of the value of unionism, so bank workers, as one of the rapidly growing elements of the white-collar population, are being closely scrutinized as potential union candidates.
The unique aspects of the banking industry have in the past dissipated drives of any 1113.gnitude directed at individual segments of the industry, while rendering any organizational campaign across the entire banking front unfeasible. The close relationship between worker and management, the …

Developing And Automating An Accounts Receivable System For The Business Office Of The University Of North Dakota, Larry G. Widmer

The growth of enrollments, greater demands by financial administrators for current information, recommendations of the American Council on Education, and the ever-increasing number of accounts receivable transactions have shown that the present system of recording cash receipts and cash revenues is not adequate.
This thesis is intended to show how the above-listed needs can be fulfilled as well as to provide the forms and necessary automated equipment for adopting a system of recording accounts receivable transactions.
The need for automated equipment led to a comprehensive examination of optical scanning and direct typewriting equipment. The conclusion was that optical scanning is …

Edwin Fremont Ladd, a native of :Maine, migrated to North Dakota in 1890 to join the chemistry faculty of the Agricultural College. In the following three decades, his work in the pure-food crusade and in the fight for fair grain grading and reasonable rail rates earned him a reputation for personal courage and devotion to agriculture. His reputation led the Nonpartisan League to endorse him for the United States Senate in 1920. Following his victory over Senator Asle J. Gronna in the Republican primary, Ladd defeated his Democratic opponent in the general election.

Electronic Data Processing Feasibility Study Machinery For Commercial Banking Firms, David W. Howell
Electronic Data Processing Feasibility Study Machinery For Commercial Banking Firms, David W. Howell
Theses and Dissertations
Electronic Data Pro9essing is one of the most significant developments in recorded history. Many commercial banks have computers installed on their premises or lease computer time from a service company. A significant proportion of the installed systems are underutilized both in the number of applications programmed and total computer run times. This is a result of bank management's ignorance of electronic data processing characteristics and the subsequent poor and incomplete planning.
A commercial banking firm should establish electronic data processing feasibility study machinery on a. permanent basis. The creation of a permanent staff of junior bank executives should ensure intelligent …

A Comparison Of The Physical Fitness Levels Attained By Participants In Interscholastic Athletes And In The Required Physical Education Program, Carl E. Hasche
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to show the improvements in physical fitness levels between two experimental groups. Experimental Group I consisted of twenty-one athletes and Experimental Group II consisted of twenty-six students in the required physical education program. Intra and inter group comparisons were made from the data collected from a special eight-item physical fitness test.
The null hypothesis was assumed with respect to the difference between the means of both groups. The hypothesis was tested with the "t" technique for checking significance of difference between means, and the F technique for determining the significance of the difference among …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Weight Control And Reduction Of High School Wrestlers On Selected Measurements Of Strength, John R. Oxton
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the changes, if any, of selected strength factors of typical North Dakota high school wrestlers, as these might be affected by programs of weight reduction or weight control.
Right grip, left grip, push, pull, leg and back strength data of the subjects were recorded using a dynamometer. The subjects were tested five times during and after the season.
Inter-group and intra-group comparisons of results were made between the control group consisting of seven high school wrestlers and the experimental group of seven high school wrestlers who experienced a weight loss of more …

The objectives of this study were to survey the small mammal fauna from eight habitats typical of southwestern North Dakota and to determine the habitat preference of the species found. Fifteen species were collected and grouped according to their occurrence in areas of varying vegetation densities.
Four species (Reithrodontomys megalotis, Microtus penn- sylvanicus, Sorex cinereus, and Eutamias minimus) were collected in dense vegetation.
