Murray replies to Murray's appeal for assistance in getting children enrolled into the Three Affiliated Tribes. Reid informs Murray that the tribes have established a cut off date for new enrollees due to the passage of US Public Law 533 which provides for per capita payments to enrolled members of the tribes. Murray to the United States (US) Bureau of Indian Affairs and copied to US Senator William Langer and US Representative Usher Burdick reports that a number of people have struggled to get their children enrolled with the Three Affiliated Tribes. Murray conveys that the Three Affiliated Tribes Tribal Business Council has said that they are not enrolling any more people after July 1, 1957. Murray appeals to the Bureau for assistance. There's a stamp on the letter indicating that the Bureau received the letter on September 17, 1956.

An Act Relative To Employment For Certain Adult Indians On Or Near Indian Reservations, United States Congress

US Government Documents related to Indigenous Nations

This United States (US) public law, also known as the Indian Relocation Act or Adult Vocational Training Program passed on August 3, 1956, allowed for the Secretary of the Interior to establish vocational training programs for Indigenous people aged 18-35 with the expressed goal of increasing employment opportunities. The law additionally aimed to encourage Indigenous people to leave reservations and “assimilate” into more urban populations. The program resulted in many Indigenous people being moved off their land and into cities where they did not have the resources or support to establish themselves.

Hart to United States (US) Senator William Langer, expresses Hart's thanks for a telegram Langer sent advising Hart that Senate Bill 2663 passed the US Senate. Hart laments that the bill "will be bogged down in the House of Representatives" but maintains it will be "good propaganda" and "good agitation" for the development of industries on reservations. Hart concludes by saying he hopes Langer will have the opportunity to visit the plant at Rolla that summer.
