Comprehensive Calculations Of The Parameters Describing Proton Energy Loss In Matter, Joseph F. Janni Dec 1971

Comprehensive Calculations Of The Parameters Describing Proton Energy Loss In Matter, Joseph F. Janni

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Extensive calculations have been made of the mean energy loss, pathlength, range, multiple scattering, and pathlength straggling of protons in many materials. Emphasis has been placed on obtaining accurate results, especially for heavy materials and protons of very low energy. Values of the energy loss between .01 and 1.0 Mev were obtained by smoothing and interpolating experimental information. Above 1.0 Mev, the Bethe equation with all the necessary shell corrections has been used. Values of the adjusted ionization potential have been determined by least squares fitting the Bethe equation to all available energy loss data. The polarization effect has been …

Analyses Of Admission Procedures For Waiting List Applicants And Retardates Admitted To New Mexico Institutions In Fiscal Years 66-67 To 70-71, Edward Eloy Martinez

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

The nature of this study was three-fold: (a) historical, (b) statistical, and (c) descriptive.

New Mexico is one of nine states with written criteria for a point system 􀀰or admission of retardates to institutions from waiting lists. The historical portion of this study presented a background of the three institutions in New Mexico and the development of the point priority system upon which their admission procedures are based.

The statistical analyses were utilized to test the admission procedures of the three institutions over the past five fiscal years.

A comprehensive study of waiting list applicants and institutionalized retardates had· not …

Taos Indians And The Blue Lake Controversy, Ronald P. Archibeck Dec 1971

Taos Indians And The Blue Lake Controversy, Ronald P. Archibeck

History ETDs

This paper shall concern itself with the sixty-four year controversy between the Taos Pueblo Indians and the United States Forest Service over the question of who should control the Blue Lake area in northern New Mexico.

To the Taos Indians, Blue Lake was their most sacred religious shrine -- the place or their emergence and re-entry into the earth after death. Also of importance because of numerous religious shrines were the 48,000 acres of wilderness watershed land adjoining the lake known as the Blue Lake area. The Indians had to convince Washington of this religious importance -- it was only …

Theoretical And Experimental Study Of Explosive Closures Of 6061-0 Aluminum Pipes, Lyle E. Edwards Dec 1971

Theoretical And Experimental Study Of Explosive Closures Of 6061-0 Aluminum Pipes, Lyle E. Edwards

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

This thesis examines the use of explosives to collapse metal pipes from an applications point-of-view. A particular system is studied, both theoretically and experimentally, in order to facilitate the future design of such closures with the least possible physical testing. The calculations are based on a rigid-perfectly plastic model of the observed deformations of the tubes, and on various assumed am derived properties of the metal and sheet explosives under the dynamic conditions of closure. A computer program has been devised which simulates the actual motion of a pipe during collapse. Experimental work involved actual test firing of aluminum cylinders …

Estudio De Casos De Toxicomanos: Ex-Adictos A Heroina, Maria Alicia Ruiperez Dec 1971

Estudio De Casos De Toxicomanos: Ex-Adictos A Heroina, Maria Alicia Ruiperez

Special Education ETDs

Due to the growing restlessness created by the continuous, systematic and indiscriminate use of drugs in North American society, it is generally agreed upon by most scientists that there is an urgent and indispensable need for scientific research in this area.

The essential base for the construction of a general theory about drug addiction and its individual and social implications, undoubtedly takes its roots from research and case studies differentiated by (1) personality types, (2) ethnic groups, (3) social class origin, (4) different types of drugs, (5) circumstances of addiction, and (6) various forms of rehabilitation.

The narrowing down to …

Techniques For Active 3he Activation Analysis For Carbon And Oxygen, William Mort Sanders Dec 1971

Techniques For Active 3he Activation Analysis For Carbon And Oxygen, William Mort Sanders

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

The surface and body concentrations of carbon and oxygen have been measured in various materials using 3He activation. Channeling techniques have been used to differentiate between interstitial and substitutional location of these impurities.

Thin target excitation functions were determined for (3He,p) reactions with carbon and oxygen over a 3He energy range from 2.5 to 9.0 MeV. These data were used to calculate the activation curves for various combinations of incident particle energy, impurity distributions, and material.

Information on several computer codes used during this study is presented.

The Stimulus Properties Of Change In Magnitude Of Reinforcement., James E. Schroeder Dec 1971

The Stimulus Properties Of Change In Magnitude Of Reinforcement., James E. Schroeder

Psychology ETDs

The major purpose of the present experiment was to demonstrate the incentive and discriminative stimulus (SD) properties of a change in magnitude of reinforcement. This was accomplished in a differential instrumental conditioning setting by correlating carious shifts in magnitude of reinforcement (and, therefore, incentive) on the discriminative stimulus trial (trial SD) with magnitude of reward on the next trial (trials SD+1). In condition LL a large reinforcement on trial SD was perfectly correlated with large reward on trial SD+1. Thus, incentive and the discrimination worked together to increase rate of responding on trials SE+1 relative to trial SD. In condition …

Administrative Choices In Police Patrol Techniques: A Comparative Examination Of Patrol Methods To Determine The Economic Soundness Of One-Man Motorized Patrol, Ernest Michael Louis Dec 1971

Administrative Choices In Police Patrol Techniques: A Comparative Examination Of Patrol Methods To Determine The Economic Soundness Of One-Man Motorized Patrol, Ernest Michael Louis

Public Administration ETDs

Police administrators frequently choose work processes that are likely to produce immediate and apparent results. Some choices appearing good at first may, in the long run, produce adverse results. This is particularly true when tools, the benefits of technological innovation, are introduced into the work situation without consideration for the effects they may have on the values and feelings of the persons who will use them. A generation ago police administrators were faced with 3 manpower pinch. Traditional patrol methods using two-man cars were discarded for one-man cars. Administrators found it more economical to buy more cars and equipment than …

Uni- And Bidimensional Concept Learning As A Function Of Age, C. Jean Rogers Dec 1971

Uni- And Bidimensional Concept Learning As A Function Of Age, C. Jean Rogers

Psychology ETDs

Dimensional attention in six- and nine-year-olds was assessed by the use of two concept identification tasks which allowed either a uni- or bidimensional solution. It was expected that the older children would be more likely to attain a bidimensional solution. The results did not confirm this prediction. A subsequent analysis of solution strategies revealed that a primary strategy or both age groups was to learn two values from a single dimension, one which predicted positive instances and one which predicted negative instance. If Ss were presented with a task where this strategy was unsuccessful, they tended to adopt one of …

Landscape Imagery In Shelley's Major Poetry: The Forest And Related Settings, Ingrid J. Parker Dec 1971

Landscape Imagery In Shelley's Major Poetry: The Forest And Related Settings, Ingrid J. Parker

English Language and Literature ETDs

The repeated use of the journey motif and the extended descriptions of landscape in Shelley's major poems suggest that journey and landscape are either allegorical or symbolic, or both. Furthermore, biographical evidence indicates that Shelley was particularly attracted to quest literature, and that he responded strongly to specific modes of travelling and to particular types of landscape.

The analysis of landscape imagery in Shelley's shorter poems reveals that natural settings such as forests, caves, bodies of water, and mountains are habitually used as images for the human mind. The journey through landscape thus becomes logically a mental journey. It is …

Federal, State, And Local Tax Burdens And Expenditure Benefits By Income Class, New Mexico, 1967., James Robert Nunns

Economics ETDs

One of the primary objectives of government taxation and expenditure policies is to redistribute current incomes between various groups in the economy in order to achieve an equitable distribution of income. Within the United States income may be redistributed both between families with different levels of income, and between families living in different states. In this study, the effect of the taxation and expenditure policies of the Federal, and New Mexico state and local governments on the level and distribution of income in New Mexico is estimated. The estimates will allow government policymakers to judge the effectiveness of their policy …

Extracellular Production Of Coagulase, Deoxyribonuclease Acid Phosphatase, Alkaline Phosphatase, And Lipase By Staphylococcus Aureus., Robert Lee Nelson Dec 1971

Extracellular Production Of Coagulase, Deoxyribonuclease Acid Phosphatase, Alkaline Phosphatase, And Lipase By Staphylococcus Aureus., Robert Lee Nelson

Biology ETDs

The activity of extracellular coagulase, deoxyribonuclease, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and lipase for 10 strains of Staphylococcus aureus was investigated. The enzymatic activities were also tested for the presence of a specific enzyme inactivator. The relationship of EH and cell density to the five enzymes was also studied.

The extracellular enzymes used in these experiments were prepared by removing cells by centrifugation from the broth of O, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 hr cultures. Cell numbers were determined by the standard plate count method. Inactivation of specific enzymes was measured by mixing equal volumes of 6 hr broth …
