Association Of Race And Ethnicity With Cognitive And Language Testing At 18-22 Months In Extremely Preterm Infants, Andrea Duncan Dec 2011

Association Of Race And Ethnicity With Cognitive And Language Testing At 18-22 Months In Extremely Preterm Infants, Andrea Duncan

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship of race/ethnicity to cognitive and language scores on the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development 3rd edition (BSID-III) in extremely preterm toddlers (<28+0 weeks estimated gestational age). Study Design: Extremely preterm toddlers at NICHD Neonatal Research Network Centers evaluated at 18-22 months adjusted age from 3 race/ethnic groups (White, Black, and Hispanic-White) were included in this cohort study. Multivariable regression modeling was used to identify race/ethnic differences adjusting for medical and psychosocial factors. Results: Children included 369 Whites, 352 Blacks and 144 Hispanic-Whites. Cognitive scores differed between groups in unadjusted analysis (p=<0.001), but not after adjusting for medical and psychosocial factors (p=0.13). Language scores differed in adjusted and unadjusted analyses. Whites scored higher than Blacks or Hispanic-Whites, and Blacks scored higher than Hispanic- Whites. Conclusions:A combination of medical variables and primary caretaker education accounted for differences in BSID-III cognitive scores between groups. Black and Hispanic-White toddlers had lower language scores than Whites, even after adjustment. Early intervention should be targeted to these identified risk factors. Assessment of early language development among minority groups may be warranted.

Assessment Of Functional Characteristics Of Small Gtpases Using Small Molecules, Jacob Agola Dec 2011

Assessment Of Functional Characteristics Of Small Gtpases Using Small Molecules, Jacob Agola

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Rab and Rho subfamilies of GTPases are functionally linked to intracellular trafficking and organization of the cytoskeleton respectively. Despite their roles, use of small molecule inhibitors or activators to map the functionality of these GTPases remains largely underexplored due to lack of suitable compounds. In this dissertation, we report on the functional characterization of Rab7 and Rac1 GTPases using small molecules. 2-(benzoylcarbamothioylamino)-5,5-dimethyl-4,7- dihydrothieno[2,3-c]pyran-3-carboxylic acid (PubChem #: CID1067700) has been used to characterize Rab7. Using bead based flow cytometry, CID1067700 was found to have significant inhibitory potency on Rab7 nucleotide binding with a respective inhibitory efficacy of 80% for BODIPY-GTP and …

The Structure Of Energy Production And Redistribution Among Tsimane' Forager-Horticulturalists, Paul L. Hooper Dec 2011

The Structure Of Energy Production And Redistribution Among Tsimane' Forager-Horticulturalists, Paul L. Hooper

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation constitutes an integrated analysis of the Tsimane' economic subsistence system. Its analyses are guided by a body of evolutionary theory which posits that life history traits, the structure of social relationships, and nature of economic production co-evolve in patterned and predictable ways. This theory specifically suggests that, for humans, the returns to embodied capital development and declines in reproductive efficiency late in life interact to produce: prolonged development, extended lifespan, menopause, and a predominantly downward three-generational system of energetic provisioning. The current analyses of Tsimane' work effort, production, and transfers are consistent with this theory in the following …

Testing Hypotheses Of The Demographic Transition In San Borja, Bolivia, Kristin Snopkowski Dec 2011

Testing Hypotheses Of The Demographic Transition In San Borja, Bolivia, Kristin Snopkowski

Anthropology ETDs

Understanding the demographic transition, a trend in which fertility drops after a period of population growth, has been an important area of anthropological and demographic research. This dissertation seeks to understand fertility change by testing five models that have been presented in the literature. The predictions that are unique to each hypothesis are tested in San Borja, Bolivia, a community currently undergoing a fertility transition. Low modern fertility seems counter-intuitive given the increase of individual wealth, but there have not been sufficient tests to lead to an understanding of why this occurs. Informational hypotheses explain fertility transition as a change …

Role Of Endothelial Bkca Channel Activity In Diminished Vasoconstrictor Reactivity Following Chronic Hypoxia, Melissa Riddle Dec 2011

Role Of Endothelial Bkca Channel Activity In Diminished Vasoconstrictor Reactivity Following Chronic Hypoxia, Melissa Riddle

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Vasoconstrictor responsiveness of the systemic circulation is attenuated following prolonged exposure to hypoxia. Previous work from our laboratory has demonstrated vasoconstrictor reactivity is diminished due to hyperpolarization of the vascular wall in systemic arterioles. The hyperpolarization of the vascular wall was found to be dependent upon the endothelium, heme oxygenase (HO), and calcium-activated large conductance potassium channel (BKCa) as removal of the endothelium or blockade of HO or BKCa restored vasoreactivity. Interestingly, recent evidence for HO and BKCa association has emerged in carotid body glomus cells where HO and BKCa form oxygen sensing complexes. In these novel oxygen sensing complexes, …

Pulmonary Endothelial Calcium Entry Following Chronic Hypoxia, Steven Menicucci Dec 2011

Pulmonary Endothelial Calcium Entry Following Chronic Hypoxia, Steven Menicucci

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Background and Specific Aims: Chronic hypoxia (CH) induced pulmonary hypertension is mediated in part by endothelial dysfunction, involving reduced intracellular Ca2+ levels and decreased production of endothelium-derived vasodilators and anti-mitogenic compounds. Agonist-induced endothelial Ca2+ entry is decreased following CH due to a derangement in T-type voltage-gated calcium channels (T-channels) and caveolin-1 containing membrane lipid domains that regulate calcium influx in these cells. Considering the importance of store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) to agonist-induced Ca2+ entry, we hypothesized that CH impairs pulmonary endothelial SOCE through altered caveolin-1 regulation of T-channels. To test this hypothesis, we addressed the following specific aims: Specific Aim …

Allosteric Modulation Of Vla-4 With The Atypical Antipsychotic Thioridazine, Bart Williams Dec 2011

Allosteric Modulation Of Vla-4 With The Atypical Antipsychotic Thioridazine, Bart Williams

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

A recent primary drug screen by the University of New Mexico Center for Molecular Discovery uncovered a novel group of allosteric-modulators of VLA-4 integrins known as phenothiazines. Phenothiazine family compounds were initially discovered as organic dyes in the 1800's, the most well-known of which is methylene blue. Relatively soon thereafter phenothiazines were found to be useful clinically, a trend that has continued in the century since peaking as antipsychotics in the 1950's. Today, phenothiazines are still being pursued clinically as seen in a number of recent patents for phenothiazine use in autoimmune disorders. This study sought to further characterize the …

Lateralization Of The Developing Rat Hippocampal Formation, Amanda Gross Dec 2011

Lateralization Of The Developing Rat Hippocampal Formation, Amanda Gross

Biology ETDs

Differences between the left and right hemisphere of the brain have been observed in humans and rodents (Broca, 1861; Wernicke, 1881), including the hippocampal formation, a region of the brain that is necessary for some forms of learning and memory (Olton and Samuelson, 1976; deToledo-Morrell et al., 1988; Bernasconi-Guastalla et al., 1994; Tabibnia et al., 1994; Poe et al., 2000; Lister et al., 2006; Hanlon et al., 2005; Sommer et al., 2005; Moskal et al., 2006; Thompson et al., 2008; Klur et al., 2009). Although lateralization of the hippocampal formation has been studied in the adult, few have sought to …

Keeping Checkpoint/Restart Viable For Exascale Systems, Kurt Ferreira Dec 2011

Keeping Checkpoint/Restart Viable For Exascale Systems, Kurt Ferreira

Computer Science ETDs

Next-generation exascale systems, those capable of performing a quintillion operations per second, are expected to be delivered in the next 8-10 years. These systems, which will be 1,000 times faster than current systems, will be of unprecedented scale. As these systems continue to grow in size, faults will become increasingly common, even over the course of small calculations. Therefore, issues such as fault tolerance and reliability will limit application scalability. Current techniques to ensure progress across faults like checkpoint/restart, the dominant fault tolerance mechanism for the last 25 years, are increasingly problematic at the scales of future systems due to …

Efficiently Bootstrapping Extreme Scale Software Systems, Joshua Goehner Dec 2011

Efficiently Bootstrapping Extreme Scale Software Systems, Joshua Goehner

Computer Science ETDs

Many scientific fields and commercial industries need to solve computationally large problems. These problems can often be broken into smaller tasks, which can be executed in parallel, on large computer systems. In pursuit of solving ever larger problems in a more timely manner, the number of nodes in these large computer systems have grown to extremely large scales. All of the extreme-scale-software systems that run on these extreme-scale-computational systems go through what we call a bootstrapping phase. During this phase, the software system is deployed onto a set of computers and its initialization information is disseminated. In this thesis, we …

Valor Wrought Asunder: The Mexican General Officer Corps In The U.S.-Mexican War, 1846-1847., Javier Ernesto Sanchez Dec 2011

Valor Wrought Asunder: The Mexican General Officer Corps In The U.S.-Mexican War, 1846-1847., Javier Ernesto Sanchez

Latin American Studies ETDs

This thesis presents a reappraisal of the performance of the Mexican general officer corps during the U.S.-Mexican War, 1846-1847. Often negatively libeled, Mexicos defeat is often attributed in no small part to the moral shortcomings of the generals who led her armies. By a detailed analysis of their background, motivations, and military careers, a more accurate perspective regarding the Mexican general officer corps' performance during the war can be obtained by the reader. It is the argument of this thesis that the operational tactics and organizational weakness of the Army's High Command sufficiently account for the failures of the generals …

Diffusion Tensor Imaging Data Reveals Grm3 Polymorphism's Association With White Matter Integrity In Schizophrenia, Joanna Mounce Dec 2011

Diffusion Tensor Imaging Data Reveals Grm3 Polymorphism's Association With White Matter Integrity In Schizophrenia, Joanna Mounce

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

While the functional disconnectivity hypothesis of schizophrenia has been the subject of much study, very little is known about the contribution of individual genotypes to connectivity between brain regions in either schizophrenia patients or in healthy controls. In this study, we obtained diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) maps and genome-wide SNP data from 74 cases and 87 age- and gender-matched controls. Correlations were performed between loading coefficients obtained from fractional anisotropy (FA) values in networks of regions representing 6 maximally independent components and 134 SNPs in genes that have been found to be important in myelination and/or schizophrenia. By using independent …

Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Transport In The Squid Giant Axon : Competition Between Cargo Motor Receptors, Jip-1, App-C, And Negative Charge, Pamela Seamster Dec 2011

Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Transport In The Squid Giant Axon : Competition Between Cargo Motor Receptors, Jip-1, App-C, And Negative Charge, Pamela Seamster

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Transport of membrane-bound organelles is critical to neuronal cell function yet mechanisms hitching vesicles to transport machinery remain elusive. Here we test whether jun-kinase interacting protein (JIP-1), a peripheral membrane scaffolding protein that binds kinesin light chain, is sufficient to mediate cargo transport in axons and study its competition with amyloid precursor protein cytoplasmic domain (APP-) and negative charge, also known motor receptors. Fluorescent beads (100 nm diameter) exhibit sequence-specific fast anterograde transport (0.46μm/s instantaneous velocity) in the squid giant axon when conjugated to a 14- amino acid synthetic peptide derived from the carboxyl terminus of JIP-1. JIP-1- beads have …

Infectious Disease And The Worldwide Distribution Of Iq, Christopher Eppig Dec 2011

Infectious Disease And The Worldwide Distribution Of Iq, Christopher Eppig

Biology ETDs

We show that infectious disease is a major contributor to the worldwide distribution of human cognitive ability, as measured by psychometric IQ. In areas where infectious disease is high, average human intelligence tends to be lower, and in areas where infectious disease is low, average human intelligence tends to be higher. In separate studies, we tested this across world nations (chapter 2) and across states of the USA (chapter 3). In efforts to disseminate our research to wider audiences, I reviewed the findings contained in chapters 2 and 3 using language that is accessible to non-biologists (chapter 4). Although it …

Native Artists Helping Our People Endure (Hope): A Social Capital Analysis Of A Grassroots Art Initiative To Address Youth Suicide In An Indigenous Community, Nathania Tsosie

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This study identifies and examines the components of social capital related to a grassroots initiative to address Indigenous youth suicide through art. The Native Artists for HOPE’s Thoreau Youth Art Project was organized by a small group of professional Native American artists in response to a sudden increase of youth suicide in a community on the Navajo Nation. Built on cultural core values identified by the artists themselves, the day long workshop encourages self-expression and creativity as an alternative to risky behaviors believed by community members to be related to suicide. A brief literature review of social capital including its …

Practical, Scalable Algorithms For Byzantine Agreement, Olumuyiwa Oluwasanmi Dec 2011

Practical, Scalable Algorithms For Byzantine Agreement, Olumuyiwa Oluwasanmi

Computer Science ETDs

With the growth of the Internet, there has been a push toward designing reliable algorithms that scale effectively in terms of latency, bandwidth and other computational resources. Scalability has been a serious problem especially with peer-to-peer (p2p) networks which may have sizes of more than a million nodes. An important problem in designing reliable algorithms is Byzantine agreement. For reasons of scalability, message complexity is a critical resource for this problem. Unfortunately, previous solutions to Byzantine agreement require each processor to send $O(n)$ messages, where $n$ is the total number of processors in the network. In this dissertation, we show …

Let The Beauty We Love Be What We Do: A Case Study In Communication-Centered Leadership, Jo Carter Dec 2011

Let The Beauty We Love Be What We Do: A Case Study In Communication-Centered Leadership, Jo Carter

Communication ETDs

While leadership research is widespread, much of it represents leadership psychology assumptions that leaders are singular individuals, different from the body that they are leading. This dissertation provides a close reading of a different approach to leadership, one arising from the cultural community around the Diana's Grove retreat center. This philosophy holds cultural norms of the Cornerstones of Community (choice, thinking well of the group, thinking well of one's self, stewardship of self, and sacred wound) as overt rules that are the foundation of sustainable community interactions. It discusses how service to the idea of community is the primary motivating …

Fast Start Of Oscillations In A Short-Pulse Relativistic Magnetron Driven By A Transparent Cathode., Sarita Prasad Nov 2011

Fast Start Of Oscillations In A Short-Pulse Relativistic Magnetron Driven By A Transparent Cathode., Sarita Prasad

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The magnetron has been a major component of radar systems since its introduction in World War II. The newer radar techniques require high peak power (GW) and short microwave pulses (few ns). To serve as a microwave source for short-pulse applications it is imperative that the magnetron needs to have both fast start and fast rate of build-up of oscillations. Both of these factors are contingent on the cathode geometry. The transparent cathode was invented at the University of New Mexico in an endeavor to improve the start time and increase the rate of build-up of oscillations in short-pulse relativistic …

Characterizations Of Plutonium Nitrate Solutions For Criticality Calculations, John Anthony Miller Oct 2011

Characterizations Of Plutonium Nitrate Solutions For Criticality Calculations, John Anthony Miller

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

In the modeling of plutonium nitrate systems for criticality calculations, the chemical formula is usually assumed to be Pu(N03)4 (where plutonium is in the +4 valence state). However in a unique situation of chemistry, plutonium has four oxidation states (III), (IV), (V), and (VI) that can exist in finite concentrations, simultaneously in aqueous solutions, in equilibrium with each other.

Scan Statistics For The Online Detection Of Locally Anomalous Subgraphs, Joshua Neil Sep 2011

Scan Statistics For The Online Detection Of Locally Anomalous Subgraphs, Joshua Neil

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Identifying anomalies in computer networks is a challenging and complex problem. Often, anomalies occur in extremely local areas of the network. Locality is complex in this setting, since we have an underlying graph structure. To identify local anomalies, we introduce a scan statistic for data extracted from the edges of a graph over time. In the computer network setting, the data on these edges are multivariate measures of the communications between two distinct machines, over time. We describe two shapes for capturing locality in the graph: the star and the k-path. While the star shape is not new to the …

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Nanoscience is a rapidly developing field at the nexus of all physical sciences which holds the potential for mankind to gain a new level of control of matter over matter and energy altogether. Directed-assembly is an emerging field within nanoscience in which non-equilibrium system dynamics are controlled to produce scalable, arbitrarily complex and interconnected multi-layered structures with custom chemical, biologically or environmentally-responsive, electronic, or optical properties. We construct mathematical models and interpret data from direct-assembly experiments via application and augmentation of classical and contemporary physics, biology, and chemistry methods. Crystal growth, protein pathway mapping, LASER tweezers optical trapping, and colloid …

Cryogenic Optical Refrigeration, Seth Melgaard Sep 2011

Cryogenic Optical Refrigeration, Seth Melgaard

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

This thesis compiles recent achievements in optical refrigeration, cooling a 5 wt. % ytterbium doped yttrium lithium fluoride (Yb+3:YLF) crystal through anti-Stokes fluorescence to a new record low temperature. This is the coldest temperature to date, without the use of cryogens or mechanical refrigerators, and is achieved by taking advantage of the Stark manifold resonance and high doping concentration available in a crystalline host. Cooling to \u223c155K from room temperature in a single stage with a cooling power of 90mW has been achieved, outperforming multi-stage Peltier coolers. Further cooling below the NIST-defined cryogenic temperature of 123K is shown feasible for …

The Neuroscience Of Motivational Interviewing Change Talk, Jon Houck Aug 2011

The Neuroscience Of Motivational Interviewing Change Talk, Jon Houck

Psychology ETDs

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a directive, client-centered therapeutic method employed in the treatment of substance abuse, with strong evidence of effectiveness. To date, the sole mechanism of action in MI with any consistent empirical support is change talk' (CT), which is generally defined as in-session verbal commitments by clients to change their problem behavior. 'Sustain talk' (ST) incorporates verbal commitments to maintain the status quo. MI maintains that during addiction treatment clients essentially talk themselves into change. Multiple studies have supported this theory, revealing that the frequency and strength of these change talk utterances from MI treatment sessions predict substance …

Demystifying The Lens Of Color: Examining The Relationship Between Academic Achievement And Racial Identity, Marla Wyche-Hall

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

The purpose of this mixed methods research study was to examine the dynamic interaction between the racial and academic identities of African American, undergraduate students who were enrolled full time at an academic institution of higher education that was both a Hispanic-serving institution (HSI) and a predominately White institution (PWI). The two main research questions addressed by this study were: 1. To what extent does the racial identity of African American, undergraduate students shape their expectations and beliefs about succeeding at the higher education level? and 2. What is the relationship between students racial identity, selected aspects of their university …

Learning In Medical School: Relationships Among Achievement Goals And Approaches To Learning In Three Classes Of Medical Students, Pamela Devoe Aug 2011

Learning In Medical School: Relationships Among Achievement Goals And Approaches To Learning In Three Classes Of Medical Students, Pamela Devoe

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Medical student learning behaviors were examined in terms of achievement goals and approaches to learning. First, second, and third year medical students completed a Questionnaire composed of three extant inventories, the Achievement Goals Questionnaire (AGQ), the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI), and the Approaches to Learning and Studying Inventory (ALSI). Performance and demographic data were analyzed in terms of Questionnaire subscales. Of the three measures, two produced moderate to high reliability values. The MAI produced low reliability values and a high number of EFA factors resulting in discontinuation of analyses for that measure. Students holding mastery-approach achievement goals are more likely …

Novel Routes For Synthesis Of Pd Nanoparticles And Faceted Zno Supports For Heterogeneous Catalysts, Patrick David Burton Aug 2011

Novel Routes For Synthesis Of Pd Nanoparticles And Faceted Zno Supports For Heterogeneous Catalysts, Patrick David Burton

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Alcohol steam reforming is a promising source of hydrogen as fuel, and could be improved by the use of an optimal catalyst. The methanol steam reforming reaction, CH3OH+H2O --> 3H2+CO2 frequently conducted by means of a Cu/ZnO catalyst. Unfortunately, this catalyst deactivates quickly and is pyrophoric. Pd catalysts are much more stable, but reactions using these catalyst follow the decomposition pathway, CH3OH --> 2H2+CO. PdZn alloys can achieve the desired selectivity, and have been noted to form under reaction conditions from Pd/ZnO heterogeneous catalysts. In the present work, careful synthesis techniques of specific support and nanoparticle surfaces have been developed …

Effects Of Non-Planar Distortions In Porphyrin Compounds On Their Properties And Functionality, Raid Haddad Aug 2011

Effects Of Non-Planar Distortions In Porphyrin Compounds On Their Properties And Functionality, Raid Haddad

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Porphyrins and related compounds are ubiquitous in nature, performing diverse functions including solar energy transduction, electron transport, molecular transport and storage, and catalysis. Due to their unique photophysical and chemical properties, they are excellent candidates for application as photosensitizers, catalysts, photocatalysts, molecular electronics and opto-electronics. Several properties of porphyrins are sensitive to small variations in their structure, and this dissertation investigates the effects of out-of-plane distortions of the macrocycle on optical properties, reactivity to axial ligands, and substituent rotation. The structure-functions relationships are examined using molecular simulations, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, resonance Raman spectroscopy, and normal-coordinate structural decomposition (NSD) analysis of …

A Knowledge Management Tool Collaborative Learning: A Case Study Using A Wiki., Jalil Fallad Aug 2011

A Knowledge Management Tool Collaborative Learning: A Case Study Using A Wiki., Jalil Fallad

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

Technology and knowledge seem to be at hand for everyone, but evidence shows that both still are eluding us. The University of Guadalajara (UDG) as well as other higher education institutions create knowledge from research on a daily basis. Nevertheless, in UDG there is not a system that promotes creation, preservation, and sharing of knowledge created experiences from research work among faculty members. Nonaka and Takeuchis Theory of Spiral Knowledge Creation had used as theorical foundation for the present study. This theory proposes that tacit knowledge is transformed into explicit knowledge creating new knowledge among members of an organization through …

Factors That Contribute To Knowledge Sharing Within Research Based Organizations, Barbara Jennings Aug 2011

Factors That Contribute To Knowledge Sharing Within Research Based Organizations, Barbara Jennings

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

Organizations struggle with the need for an aggregate of the knowledge that is known by individuals in their employment. Generally this is knowledge that was gained through effort completed for the business. In the technical industry this is often emergent knowledge that is discovered through work experience and not always documented in general publication. Knowledge is acquired by an individual through personal endeavor and investment and is not always easily captured or shared with others. It is necessary for management to have access to this knowledge in order to make decisions that will provide the ability for an organization to …

Steady States, Non-Steady Evolution, Pinch-Off And Post-Pinch-Off Of Axisymmetric Drops In Stokes Flow, Shadi Askarian Naderi Aug 2011

Steady States, Non-Steady Evolution, Pinch-Off And Post-Pinch-Off Of Axisymmetric Drops In Stokes Flow, Shadi Askarian Naderi

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

A good understanding of drop evolution and breakup is important in many applications. For instance, controlling the liquid droplet size is crucial in atomization processes such as fuel combustion and fertilizer application, as well as drop-on-demand technologies such as ink-jet printing and DNA arraying. In these applications, the length scales are very small relative to viscosity so that the Reynolds number is much less than unity. The aim of this work is to investigate the evolution and breakup of drops in Stokes flow. Drop evolution depends on different factors, such as the drop size, the viscosity, any applied force, or …
