This article represents the results of a study of the participants in the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Leadership and Career Development Program (LCDP). The study was designed initially to determine the effectiveness of the initiative; however, secondary goals reveal data on program participants perceptions of the success of the program in multiple areas of leadership as defined by program elements. In addition to demographic queries, participants were asked about positions held before and after program completion and the perceived impact of the program on their career paths. Metadata For Special Collections In Contentdm: How To Improve Interoperability Of Unique Fields Through Oai-Pmh, Myung-Ja Han, Christine Cho, Timothy W. Cole, Amy S. Jackson

Collection curators develop locally defined unique fields to support local requirements. As per the guidelines of the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH), Simple Dublin Core is the minimum requirement for exposing metadata to aggregators. Oftentimes the level of specificity of unique local fields is not translated well to Dublin Core, which may hinder the interoperability of the item metadata record. This paper researched 21 digital collections that were hosted in CONTENTdm. The UNM Libraries hosted a lecture at UNMs Centennial Science and Engineering Library on Friday, September 18, 2009 as part of the e-Research Lecture Series. Presentations were made by Malcolm Atkinson, the official 'e-Science envoy,' funded by the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in the UK, and David De Roure, a computer science professor at the University of Southampton, UK and director of the 'myExperiement' project. Together the two are visiting a number of institutions across the country, including MIT, Harvard, UNM, CalTech, and Microsoft Research. The University of New Mexico will mandate in 2009 that theses and dissertations be submitted in electronic form as the copy of record. These documents will reside in the universitys digital repository, operated on a DSpace platform. This article reviews practices for thesis and dissertation metadata creation with a focus on DSpace instances, best practice recommendations for authorsubmitted metadata, recommendations for subject analysis, and training for metadata practitioners. The article recommends processes for author submission, metadata quality control and enhancement, and crosswalking of the metadata to the library's catalog to maximize discovery.'

Open access repositories are springing up globally at academic institutions, allowing staff and students to share research findings effectively. There are many flavors of Institutional Repositories (IRs) and many options for building support and recruiting content. Existing content in IRs are sometimes available through an internet search facility or from secondary service providers through harvesting and subject portals. Latin America provides excellent examples that illustrate the challenges and great opportunities ahead. strategic goal of the University of New Mexico is student retention, especially for underrepresented students. To assist in reaching that goal, the University Libraries offered the Satellite Outreach Services Program, which included reference and instruction, and was provided in the university's multicultural student services centers. This article describes the program's planning, implementation, and statistics and includes a detailed description of outreach activities for one of the student centers, American Indian Student Services.

This paper explores ways in which academic libraries can partner with colleges of education to prepare teachers who can apply research to their practice. Federal mandates such as No Child Left Behind (2001) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2004) require teachers to implement evidence-based practices in their classrooms, which presents a challenge to teacher preparation programs and raises important questions about the nature of evidence in education. We believe that information literacy (IL) skills are critical in preparing teachers who can thoughtfully, critically, and ethically implement evidence-based practices. The integration of the Internet into contemporary society worldwide has had a profound impact on the way we communicate, relate to ourselves, and to each other. Different users, depending on various characteristics such as age, gender, education, and sociocultural background, access the Internet for various communication needs such as exchanging emails, making new friends, or engaging in a serious discussion. Whatever the goal, users need to adjust to this new computer-mediated interactive environment, and they do so either in ways that reveal native cultural values, or reflect the creation of new cultural norms and conventions.

The Special Libraries association (SLA), celebrating its 100th year in 2009, has long considered leadership qualities to be an important characteristic of members of the association. This paper describes the structure of the organization and types of leadership programs available to SLA members and reviews some of the research done on the individual potential leadership characteristics of librarians and on special librarians in particular. A brief summary of the current activities of SLA and its positioning for the future are also provided.
