Neighborhood Experiences And The Co-Construction Of Neighborhood, Race, And Gender: A Qualitative Study Of A Middle-Class, Latino-White Neighborhood, Elena Windsong

Sociology ETDs

This dissertation incorporates three distinct bodies of scholarship to bridge theories on: 1) the social construction of community and neighborhood, 2) the social construction of race, and 3) the social construction of gender. In doing so, I identify similarities in these theories by focusing on the symbolic and interactional dimensions. I draw from this theoretical framework to address the research question: for a middle-class neighborhood with a relatively even mix of both whites and Latinos, what are the patterns of neighborhood experiences in terms of race and gender? I develop the multidimensional analytic concept of neighborhood experiences to include neighboring, …

Revealing A Spectrum Of Racialized Sexuality: Representations Of Video Game Characters Over Time, 1981-2012, Kelly Kathleen Mccarthy

While researchers have examined controlling images of race and gender in the media, many have failed to acknowledge the role video games play in the hegemonic domain of power and few have examined the simultaneity of race and gender. This study expands upon existing literature by using video games as a site of racial formation, through which racialized "others" are created and Whiteness is normalized. Through the lens of intersectionality, I examine representations of female characters that appeared in popular video games between 1981 and 2012 and assess changes in racial composition, sexualization, narrative role, and aggression. A content analysis …

The Roles Of Disorder, Attitudes Toward The Legal System, And Neighborhood Satisfaction In The Intervention During Neighborhood Problems, Erin Coleman

Sociology ETDs

A key idea in the communities and crime literature is that residents need to take ownership and intervene as a strategy to solve community problems including crime. This process is part of a larger concept called community social organization, which refers to the ability of a neighborhood to achieve collective goals like public safety. It is important to understand what predicts intervention at the micro-level as individuals will likely not react the same to similar neighborhood characteristics. How do individual perceptions of neighborhood characteristics influence a resident to intervene during a neighborhood problem? Furthermore, do perceptions of these characteristics motivate …

Public Frames And Message Outcomes In A Policy Oriented Social Movement, Danielle Albright Jun 2015

Public Frames And Message Outcomes In A Policy Oriented Social Movement, Danielle Albright

Sociology ETDs

In the early 1980s, scholars declared the Battered Womens Movement (BWM) co-opted by institutional response. However, domestic violence policy proposals proliferated in the decade which followed, culminating in the adoption of the Violence Against Women Act by the U.S. Congress in 1993. While there was no evidence of resurgence, the BWM was anecdotally credited with these policy accomplishments. The current project is a qualitative interpretative policy analysis aimed at evaluating these seemingly contradictory claims by assessing the congruence of the content of domestic violence related policy proposals with the public messages of the BWM. Findings suggest that the BWM influenced …

"Fat For An Asian": The Embodiment Of Asian Stereotypes In An Online Community, Mallory Fallin

Sociology ETDs

Previous research has suggested that different racial groups have differing expectations of body size, but Asian Americans have largely been absent from this literature. Thick Dumpling Skin, a blog that focuses on body image issues and eating disorders in the Asian American community, provides an opportunity to study this unexplored topic. Thick Dumpling Skin is highly interactive and features submitted posts from multiple users. Using qualitative content analysis to code archived blog posts from 2011 to 2014, this paper studies how online users in this community come to embody stereotypes regarding the Asian body. In my analysis, I discuss how …
