Urinary incontinence is a major health concern for midlife women, with demonstrated effects on self-concept, life-style, and sexual function. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of midlife female urinary incontinence on the intimate dyad from a chronic illness perspective. The Corbin and Strauss Collaborative Chronic Illness Trajectory Model identifies biographical and relationship work engaged in when coping with a chronic health condition in the context of an intimate relationship. This exploratory study described levels of personal growth and examined relationships among personal growth, demographic, clinical, and cognitive factors in a convenience sample (N = 103) of community-residing adults with New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class II-IV heart failure (HF). The study was guided by Mishels reconceptualized uncertainty in illness theory and Tedeschi and Calhoun's post-traumatic growth model. Family caregivers significantly contribute to the provision of health care for their family members. This complex care can result in stress that may lead to both positive and negative consequences for the caregiver. Current literature tends to focus on negative consequences such as caregiver burden. This study addressed the gaps in knowledge about psychiatric boarding with the aims of (a) determining the extent of psychiatric boarding in Florida hospitals for individuals meeting criteria for involuntary psychiatric examination and (b) explaining what health services system resources and individual patient determinants contribute to psychiatric boarding. Every year, one-third of the 4 million child-bearing women in the United States have a cesarean delivery. Of these, 91% have a repeat cesarean delivery with the birth of subsequent children. Cesarean deliveries account for more than half of childbirth-related hospitalization expenses totaling approximately $8 billion every year. A repeat cesarean delivery has a 40% greater hospital cost than a vaginal delivery. Yet, the cost of the delivery for the health-care payer is rarely addressed in the published peer-reviewed literature.
