Columbus, New Mexico, And Palomas, Chihuahua: Transnational Landscapes Of Violence, 1888-1930, Brandon Morgan

History ETDs

In examining the area surrounding Columbus, New Mexico, and Palomas, Chihuahua, as a landscape of violence, this dissertation historicizes the process by which violent actions create a sense of place. Although neither town is considered large enough to be of much consequence, both were targeted by bellicose campaigns that sought to destabilize the Mexican state during the Porfiriato and the Mexican Revolution. Raids on the Palomas customs house were, at least in part, responses to the drive of the Mexican government under Porfirio Díaz to create modern progress and order in Mexico. For many inhabitants of rural northwestern Chihuahua, the …

Americanization, Language Policy, And The Promise Of Education: Public School Formation And Educational Attainment In Albuquerque, New Mexico, And Nogales, Arizona, 1880-1942, Carlos Francisco Parra

History ETDs

This study analyzes the nature of identity formation discourses and processes in terms of race, gender, citizenship, and educational attainment at the turn of the twentieth century in the communities of Nogales, Arizona, and Albuquerque, New Mexico. This study articulates the labyrinthine nature of the lived experiences of Hispanics with respect to how externally-imposed ideas of social interaction manifested themselves in these borderlands communities. One of the themes of this work is the analysis of the role of early public schools in their effort to create a cohesive identity among their diverse students. In this analysis significant questions relating to …

"Is This Park To Memorialize Confederate Valor And History Or Not?": Sectionalist Civil War Memory In The History Of Manassas National Battlefield Park, 1861-2011, Michael Burns

History ETDs

In the 150 years since the start of the U.S. Civil War, historians and laypeople alike have debated the causes and conduct of the war. Through the acceptance of the Confederate veterans memorial school the Lost Cause that led to reunification in the late nineteenth century, the memory of the Civil War and the actual events became indistinguishable. This blurring carried over into the work of interpretation at national Civil War battlefield and military parks. Although numerous historians have tackled the issues between Civil War memory and the national parks, and the connection to reunification, the majority have examined only …

The Forging Of Castilian Law: Land Disputes Before The Royal Audiencia And The Transmission Of A Legal Tradition, James E. Dory-Garduño Jul 2013

The Forging Of Castilian Law: Land Disputes Before The Royal Audiencia And The Transmission Of A Legal Tradition, James E. Dory-Garduño

History ETDs

The study of legal history has attracted scholars who have surveyed legal writings and their development over time as a body of literature. Others have taken this further by analyzing how the principles contained in these legal writings have been applied, by attempting to analyze cases with similar issues, usually in regards to a specific region or jurisdiction. This study combines both approaches by analyzing how Castilian law formed in the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth centuries and was applied first through the royal court and then through the Audiencia Real Castellana (high tribunal). While there have been studies that analyze …

The Ethereal Promise: Progressive Ideology, Internationalism, And Propaganda In World War Ii Radio Drama, Steven Kostelecky Jul 2013

The Ethereal Promise: Progressive Ideology, Internationalism, And Propaganda In World War Ii Radio Drama, Steven Kostelecky

History ETDs

Radio drama in America between the years 1939 and 1945 both reflected the domestic life of its citizens and helped direct it. The United States government, independent organizations, broadcast networks, and individual producers deployed radio drama to promote the entry of the United States onto the world stage both by military intervention in World War II and as a democratic conciliator in shaping the postwar world. My thesis addresses the question of whether radio drama deployed as propaganda during World War II acted solely to reinforce an extant American ideology necessary for the conduct of the war or if it …

Salinas Pueblo Missions: The Early History, Jeanette L. Wolfe Jul 2013

Salinas Pueblo Missions: The Early History, Jeanette L. Wolfe

History ETDs

This paper examines the early history of Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument just beyond the time when Gran Quivira was set aside as a government reservation. It focuses on the Pueblo Indian and Spanish Colonial mission ruins now protected by the National Park Service, at the management units of Gran Quivira, Abó, and Quarai, while also placing the Salinas story into the broader historical context of New Mexico and U. S. West history. This is accomplished by a careful examination of the first hand accounts by individuals who visited the sites throughout this early period in their history, with a …

Contested Spaces: Protestantism In Oaxaca, 1920-1995, Kathleen Mcintyre Jan 2013

Contested Spaces: Protestantism In Oaxaca, 1920-1995, Kathleen Mcintyre

History ETDs

This study focuses on intra-village religious conflict stemming from Protestant conversion in Oaxaca. Protestant expansion is nowhere more visible than in southern Mexico. Of the southern states Oaxaca has the highest growth rate of Protestantism, increasing 531% between 1970 and 2000. From 2000 to 2010, it grew another 65%. Such rapid change brought serious conflicts in closely knit indigenous villages. Asserting that en el pueblo, la costumbre es ley,' ('in the town, custom is law') some communities argued that Protestant expansion created divisions and jeopardized communalism. Religious competition challenged collective identity in indigenous villages, leading to competing conceptualizations of tradition …

Dennis Chavez And The Inter-American Ideal, 1936-1962, John Granato Ii

History ETDs

Despite the amount of research conducted on the accomplishments of Dennis Chavez, U.S. Senator from New Mexico, little in known about his activities in Latin America. Most of the studies completed to date focus on Chavezs domestic accomplishments, creating an image of a man who primarily focused on New Mexico issues. This study seeks to expand the image of Dennis Chavez to incorporate his exploits in Latin America through an analysis of documents located in his papers, the Congressional Record, and various periodicals. An analysis of the available documentation reveals that Dennis Chavez created a vision that the entire Western …

Ranching In Northeastern New Mexico, Conchita Sintas Jan 2013

Ranching In Northeastern New Mexico, Conchita Sintas

History ETDs

Historians have studied ranching extensively in Texas, Wyoming, and Montana. There are many monographs published on ranches, ranchers, and cowboys. Colfax and Union counties have an extensive number of ranches. These ranches are from as small as ten acres to as large as 590,000 acres. These ranches in their own right deserve to be studied, especially since they were a part of at least two legitimate land grants: Maxwell Land Grant and Pablo Montoya Land Grant. In addition, some of these ranches exist because of the railroad, which runs through both counties. This thesis examines a few of the many …
