In order to make the analysis of the period selected for study, data were collected which would furnish answers to the following questions:

  1. What subjects were being offered?
  2. What subject fields led in registration?
  3. What subjects showed a gain in registration?
  4. What subjects showed a loss in registration?
  5. How many schools offered the different subjects?
  6. Which subjects showed a gain in the number of schools offering?

The purpose of this study is to present an analysis of the status of interscholastic athletic coaches of the New Mexico athletic association for the school year 1935-1936. The factors to be considered are: (1) the age, marital status, and residence in New Mexico of athletic coaches; (2) the training and athletic participation of coaches; (3) the total years of experience including tenure in present position of athletic coaches; (4) the salaries received by athletic coaches; (5) the duties of athletic coaches; (6) the attitude of athletic coaches toward coaching; (7) school conditions affecting athletic coaches and coaching.

The conditions of New Mexico and its time of annexation to the United States were different from most other territories that had been added. The population was composed almost entirely of Spanish descent and Indians. Their customs and ideas of church and state differed completely from those of the American subjects. The climatic and geographic conditions of the territory caused the living conditions to be entirely different.
