A Novel Deliberative Multicriteria Evaluation Approach To Ecosystem Service Valuation, Georgia Mayrommati, Mark E. Borsuk, Richard B. Howarth

Although efforts to address ecosystem services in decision making have advanced considerably in recent years, there remain challenges related to valuation. In particular, conventional economic approaches have been criticized for their inability to capture the collective nature of ecosystem services, for their emphasis on monetary metrics, and the difficulty of assessing the value of ecosystem services to future generations. We present a deliberative multicriteria evaluation (DMCE) method that combines the advantages of multicriteria decision analysis with a deliberation process that allows citizens and scientists to exchange knowledge and evaluate ecosystem services in a social context. Massachusetts Households Downbeat About Personal Finances, Mixed Expectations For Ma And Us Businesses 5/24/2024, Unh Survey Center

Most Massachusetts residents say that they are doing about the same financially as a year ago and anticipate similar finances a year from now, but more say they are worse off than say they are better off. Those who anticipate being worse off most often cite the cost of living as a reason. Bay Staters are largely ambivalent in their feelings about the short-term health of the Massachusetts and national economies.

Nearly half of Rhode Island residents say that they are worse off financially than a year ago and a majority think now is a bad time to buy a major household item. Rhode Islanders are somewhat positive about the state’s economy in the coming year. Republicans and Independents are far more negative than Democrats about their personal finances, the state economy, and the national economy and the majority disapprove of how President Biden in handling the economy. Nearly One-Third Of Granite Staters Expect To Be Worse Off In A Year; Cost Of Living And Inflation Cited As Reasons 5/24/2024, Unh Survey Center

A plurality of Granite Staters think they are worse off financially than they were a year ago and almost one-third expect to be worse off a year from now. The most frequently cited reasons are inflation or the cost of living. Republicans and Independents are considerably more likely than Democrats to be pessimistic about their personal finances. State residents are also pessimistic about the short and long-term macroeconomic outlook of the country at large but are somewhat more optimistic in their expectations for the New Hampshire economy.

President Joe Biden holds a commanding lead over former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race in Massachusetts, while Robert F. Kennedy Jr. enjoys support from one in ten likely voters. Voters who do not support Trump think a Trump victory would be a threat to democracy. Most Massachusetts residents believe Trump is guilty of the crimes in his “hush money” case but are not sure he will be convicted. Bay Staters are divided on whether tent encampments on campuses to protest the war in Gaza are acceptable.

More than half of likely voters in Rhode Island plan to vote for President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election. However, a majority of Rhode Islanders disapprove of Biden's performance as president, many citing his handling of immigration as a reason they disapprove. Donald Trump is an unpopular figure in Rhode Island and nearly-two thirds believe Trump is guilty in his ”hush money” case.
