Sublethal Behavioral And Physiological Effects Of The Biomedical Bleeding Process On The American Horseshoe Crab, Limulus Polyphemus, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Rebecca L. Anderson, Christopher C. Chabot

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

The hemolymph of the American horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, is harvested from over 500,000 animals annually to produce Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL), a medically important product used to detect pathogenic bacteria. Declining abundance of spawning Limulus females in heavily harvested regions suggests deleterious effects of this activity, and while mortality rates of the harvest process are known to be 10%–30%, sublethal behavioral and physiological effects are not known. In this study, we determined the impact of the harvest process on locomotion and hemocyanin levels of 28 female horseshoe crabs. While mortality rates after bleeding (18%) were similar to previous studies, …

Estuarine Macrophytes At Bakkhali, Cox’S Bazar, Bangladesh With Reference To Mangrove Diversity, M. K. Abu Hena, B. Japar Sidik, A. Aysha, H. Ahasan, Frederick T. Short

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

The diversity and ecosystem significance of macrophyte communities was studied, with emphasis on the mangrove species in the Bakkhali estuary of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Macrophytes of the Bakkhali river estuary were mainly mangroves (Avicennia marina Forssk Vierh and A. alba Blume and Acanthus ilicifolius Linnaeus) of inundation Class-IV; i.e., the mangroves are inundated 2-20 times per month (Watson, 1928), a wild rice variety of salt marsh (Porteresia coarctata Tateoka), Congon grass (Imperata cylindrica P. Beauv.), seagrass (Halophila beccarii Ascherson), macro-algae (Ulva intestinalis Linnaeus, Catenella nipae Zanardini and Hypnea sp.) and mangrove associates Suaeda maritima Only two individual plants of mangrove, …

Patterns Of Activity Expressed By Juvenile Horseshoe Crabs, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Elizabeth A. Dubofsky, S. D. Simpson, Christopher C. Chabot Aug 2013

Patterns Of Activity Expressed By Juvenile Horseshoe Crabs, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Elizabeth A. Dubofsky, S. D. Simpson, Christopher C. Chabot

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

Adult American horseshoe crabs, Limulus polyphemus, possess endogenous circadian and circatidal clocks controlling visual sensitivity and locomotion, respectively. The goal of this study was to determine the types of activity rhythms expressed by juvenile horseshoe crabs (n = 24) when exposed to a 14:10 light/dark cycle (LD) for 10 days, followed by 10 days of constant darkness (DD). Horseshoe crab activity was recorded with a digital time-lapse video system that used an infrared-sensitive camera so animals could be monitored at night. In LD, 15 animals expressed daily patterns of activity, 6 displayed a circatidal pattern, and the remaining 3 were …

Valuing New Hampshire Salt Marshes: An Approach To Measuring Ecosystem Services, David M. Burdick

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

David Burdick presented work a method for estimating the ecosystem services benefits of salt marsh restoration. The approach combines ecological valuation, which uses structural and functional indicators to measure the marshes response to restoration, and economic valuation, which uses ecosystem services valuations, to determine the net gain in ecosystem services of marsh restoration.

Quantifying The Loss Of A Marine Ecosystem Service: Filtration By The Eastern Oyster In Us Estuaries, Philine S. E. Zu Ermgassen, Mark D. Spalding, Raymond E. Grizzle, Robert D. Brumbaugh

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

The oyster habitat in the USA is a valuable resource that has suffered significant declines over the past century. While this loss of habitat is well documented, the loss of associated ecosystem services remains poorly quantified. Meanwhile, ecosystem service recovery has become a major impetus for restoration. Here we propose a model for estimating the volume of water filtered by oyster populations under field conditions and make estimates of the contribution of past (c. 1880–1910) and present (c. 2000–2010) oyster populations to improving water quality in 13 US estuaries. We find that filtration capacity of oysters has declined almost universally …
