Abundance estimates are essential for fisheries management, but estimating the abundance of open populations with low recapture rates has historically been unreliable. However, by using mark-recapture data modulated with survivability parameters obtained from analysis of acoustic telemetry data, more accurate abundance estimates can be made for species that exhibit these characteristics. One such species is the Atlantic sturgeon, for which abundance estimates were designated a research priority following precipitous population declines throughout the 20th century. We addressed this research need in the Saco River Estuary (SRE), a system where the Atlantic sturgeon has been extensively studied using mark-recapture and acoustic …

The Role Of Awake Fiberoptic Intubation In The Difficult Airway, Robert Montague
The Role Of Awake Fiberoptic Intubation In The Difficult Airway, Robert Montague
Nurse Anesthesia Student Capstones
Awake fiberoptic intubation (AFOI) is a specialized technique used by anesthesia providers to decrease the risk of airway management during tracheal intubation of a predicted difficult airway. The rate of AFOI has decreased, and the advent of the video laryngoscope may be a contributing factor. However, there is still a need for AFOI. This case study reviews the relevance of, current indications for, and best practices for performing AFOI. Is AFOI still relevant in current anesthesia practice when managing airway difficulties such as limited mouth opening, obstructive sleep apnea, limited neck extension, head and neck pathology, morbid obesity, and progressive …

Migratory birds time their migration based on cues that signal resource availability for reproduction. However, with climate change, the timing of seasonal events may shift, potentially inhibiting the ability of some species to use them as accurate cues for migration. We studied the relationship between phenological shifts and reproduction by long- and short-distance migratory songbirds—Bobolinks (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) and Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis). Our study population breeds in hayfields and pastures in Vermont, USA, where farmers are also changing management activities in response to climate change. From 2002 to 2019, we monitored nest initiation dates to quantify …
Dexmedetomidine As An Adjunct To Regional And Neuraxial Anesthesia, Tobin Tollett
Dexmedetomidine As An Adjunct To Regional And Neuraxial Anesthesia, Tobin Tollett
Nurse Anesthesia Student Capstones
Regional and neuraxial anesthetic techniques are ever-expanding, and an understanding of the tools, medications, and adjuncts associated with these techniques is prudent for anesthesia providers. One goal of these techniques is to extend pain management beyond the initial surgical phase by using long-acting local anesthetics with or without adjunct medications. The purpose of this review is to detail the clinical utility, benefits, and risks of dexmedetomidine as an adjunct to regional and neuraxial anesthetic techniques. This review includes an analysis of literature of over 20 randomized controlled trials comparing the use of dexmedetomidine to other adjuncts in common regional and …

The Development Of A Multiple Errands Test For Pre/Post Concussive Testing On A College Campus: The University Multiple Errands Test - Lessons Learned, Regula H. Robnett, Kathleen Hahn, Tetee Roland
Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications
The Multiple Errands Test (MET) is an occupation-based assessment tool, used to determine if someone who has sustained an acquired brain injury can successfully complete everyday errands, such as purchasing items at a gift shop, mailing a letter, and determining what hours a store is open. The MET has been used successfully in a hospital setting. Due to the MET’s ecological validity, we sought to determine if an adapted MET (revised for a college campus setting) would be an appropriate alternative to the ImPACT, an often-required, on-line pre and post-concussion neuropsychological assessment for high school and college athletes. Students may …

Lower Extremity Strengthening, Neuromuscular Re-Education And Graded Activity For A Runner With Distal Hamstring Tendinopathy: A Case Report, Tara Oyasato
Case Report Papers
Background and Purpose: Hamstring injuries are common injuries athletes face with high recurrence rates. Many hamstring injuries, including hamstring tendinopathy are caused by non-contact mechanisms like running due to its role in eccentrically controlling rapid knee extension and hip flexion. Despite its prevalence, there is controversy surrounding the optimal treatment of a hamstring strain. The purpose of this case study was to document the physical therapy (PT) interventions for a runner with an acute distal hamstring injury and tendinopathy. Case Description: The patient was a 23-year-old active male referred to outpatient PT with a diagnosis of patellar tendinitis. The procedural …

Diverse Demographic Factors Influence Apparent Juvenile Survival In A Migratory Songbird, Emma M. White, Noah G. Perlut, Steven E. Travis, Allan Strong
Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
To better understand the dynamics of avian populations and their role in population trends, we require an in-depth understanding of the factors influencing the survival of adults and juveniles. How-ever, assessing survival in juveniles is often challenging, especially in small, migratory species where individuals typically disperse from the study area and are not available for recapture in subsequent years. Bobolinks (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) are a long-distance migrant that exhibits natal philopatry in at least one population, allowing for more comprehensive juvenile survival analyses than in many other long-distance avian migrants. Using a 17-yr dataset from two sites representing a …

Management Schemes, Not Philopatry Or Breeding Experience, Affect Nest Success Of Two Songbirds In Vermont Hayfields, Kylie Denny, Noah G. Perlut, Allan Strong
Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Songbirds can benefit from natal philopatry through prior knowledge about site‐specific resources and local adaptation to environmental conditions. Likewise, breeding experience may also play a role in reproductive success. However, for birds that breed in managed habitats, management activities may overwhelm any potential benefits of philopatry or breeding experience. We examined the effect of site fidelity on reproductive success in 1,823 bobolink and Savannah sparrow nests in agricultural grasslands in Vermont, USA. From 2003–2019 we monitored the nests of 51 female Savannah sparrows and 72 female bobolinks that returned to breed on or near fields in which they hatched between …
