Comparative Nutritional Assessment And Metabolomics Of A Wrky Rice Mutant With Enhanced Germination Rates, Santiago Bataller, Anne J. Villacastin, Qingxi J. Shen, Christine Bergman

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Rice is the primary staple food for half the world’s population. Climate change challenges and food insecurity supports the need for rice with agronomically advantageous traits. We report on a transposon insertional rice mutant with enhanced germination rates. This trait is advantageous for rice growth in limited water regions and to reduce yield constraints caused by weed and bird competition. Evaluations of vital nutritional components, compositional analysis, and comparative metabolomics on threshed grain samples are performed, as these assays are those used to assess the safety of foods from genetically modified crops. Compared with the wild type (cv. Nipponbare), oswrky71 …

Human diets containing greater resistant starch (RS) are associated with superior glycemic control. Although high amylose rice has higher RS (29 g/kg to 44 g/kg) than lower amylose content varieties, sensory and processing properties associated with RS have not been evaluated. This study used variants of Waxy and starch synthase II a (SSIIa) genes to divide high amylose (256 g/kg to 284 g/kg) varieties into three haplotypes to examine their effects on RS, RVA parameters, and 14 cooked rice texture properties. RVA characteristics were influenced by both genes with peak and hotpaste viscosity differentiating the three haplotypes. Setback from hotpaste …

The Role Of Oswrky71 And Its Interacting Proteins In Seed Germination And Early Growth Of Cereal Grains, Margaret Ja Shin May 2013

The Role Of Oswrky71 And Its Interacting Proteins In Seed Germination And Early Growth Of Cereal Grains, Margaret Ja Shin

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

During seed germination and early seedling growth, complex molecular and physiological events occur in rice (Oryza sativa) and other cereal grains. As the seed transitions to vegetative tissue, it responds to both favorable and unfavorable environmental conditions and is vulnerable to attack by predation and disease. Although seeds are relatively small and tender in size, extensive and sophisticated molecular networks enables the immobile seed to grow, survive and adapt in its environment. One of the networks I am interested in is in the crosstalk between the gibberellin (GA) and abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathways. These pathways are interesting because they …

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

The WRKY super family is known to play a major role during the plant stress response and development. My project focuses on the protein-protein interaction of an Oryzasativa (rice) transcription factor, OsWRKY71 which functions as the repressor of gibberellins signaling pathway. Previous literature revealed that OsWRKY71 can interact with itself or OsWRKY51 to form dimmers by using bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC). To confirm this result, we use yeast two-hybrid system. As our data showed, OsWRKY71 seems to suppress the reporter gene expression of the conventional yeast two-hybrid system, so we use a modified yeast two-hybrid, Mating-based Split Ubiquitin System (MbSUS). …

"The Most Powerful Woman In The World": The Rhetorical Image Construction Of Condoleezza Rice, Karin Dawn Tidgewell Jan 2006

"The Most Powerful Woman In The World": The Rhetorical Image Construction Of Condoleezza Rice, Karin Dawn Tidgewell

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Condoleezza Rice is recognized as one of President George W. Bush's closest advisors and one of America's most influential officials. During her tenure as Bush's National Security Advisor and then as America's first African American female Secretary of State, Rice faced situations in which her image was challenged, undermined, or questioned by other individuals. This project explores how she addressed her image through examination of her rhetorical strategies in her opening statement before the 9/11 Commission in April of 2004, her first address as Secretary of State to State Department staff in January of 2005, and her first public speech …
