Individual Differences In Police Officers’ Decision Styles In Order Maintenance Policing, Damarrah Elisheba Jameson
Individual Differences In Police Officers’ Decision Styles In Order Maintenance Policing, Damarrah Elisheba Jameson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Day-to-day police work tends to be in order maintenance policing. These encounters necessitate officer discretion in decision responses to manage them. These decision responses reflect an officer’s decision style which precedes the encounter and drives subsequent decision making to manage them. However, little is known about officer-level decision style. For example, whether an officer has a rational, intuitive, dependent, avoidant, or spontaneous decision style (Scott& Bruce, 1995). Police training in any format often lacks attention to decision styles. As such, an officer’s decision style is most likely associated with demographics (e.g., age, gender) and occupational self-efficacy – a reflection of …
Closing The Racial Gap: The Lack Of Diverse Faculty At The University Of Nevada, Las Vegas And University Of Nevada, Reno, Olivia K. Cheche
Closing The Racial Gap: The Lack Of Diverse Faculty At The University Of Nevada, Las Vegas And University Of Nevada, Reno, Olivia K. Cheche
Student Research
In September 2021, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) reclaimed its status as the nation’s most diverse university, according to U.S. News and World Report rankings. However, despite having such a diverse student body, the institution’s faculty population continues to be predominantly white. This report explores the gap in racial diversity between students and faculty members at Nevada’s two research universities: UNLV and the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). As one of the most racially diverse states in the United States, Nevada is an ideal case study for understanding this gap in racial diversity, and an ideal laboratory for …

Diversifying Demography Of The Mountain West, Kelliann Beavers, Olivia K. Cheche, Vanessa Booth, Saha Salahi, Caitlin J. Saladino, William E. Brown Jr.
Demography
Between 2000 and 2019, Mountain West states and metros have mirrored a nationwide trend of white populations gradually making up a smaller percentage of the total population. As a result, various race-ethnic minority groups now make up larger percentages of the total population and have contributed to increased diversification in the region. Using data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau and analyzed by William H. Frey from the Brookings Institution, this Fact Sheet focuses on the diversification and population changes in the Mountain West.
The Impact Of Economic Recession On The Health Of Adult Nevadans, Ariana Goertz
The Impact Of Economic Recession On The Health Of Adult Nevadans, Ariana Goertz
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Recessions are generally considered to cause negative consequences, but recent studies have provided evidence that some health outcomes improve as the economy deteriorates. The relationship between economic downfalls and health is not straightforward; it is important to look at how health has been impacted in one of the areas hit hardest by the recession. Las Vegas, Nevada was previously considered recession-proof, seemingly unaffected by previous economic downturns exhibited by the rest of the country. However, during the Great Recession of 2007-2009, Las Vegas led the country in highest rates of unemployment and foreclosures. This was quite a collapse for a …

Changes In Gaming And Gaming Participants In The United States, Roy A. Cook, Laura J. Yale
Changes In Gaming And Gaming Participants In The United States, Roy A. Cook, Laura J. Yale
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
Public interest and acceptance of casino gaming as a recreational activity has resulted in a proliferation of gaming locations. The spread of gaming locations and the acceptance of gaming as a legitimate leisure activity may be explained from a marketing perspective through diffusion theory. Gaming could see continued revenue growth and participation or, like lotteries, it could face saturation and even decline. To avoid the potential problems associated with maturation, gaming operators may need to review the experiences of state lotteries which have faced and dealt with the problems of maturation and saturation.
Weapons Labs And City Growth: Livermore And Albuquerque, 1945-1975, Layne Rochelle Karafantis
Weapons Labs And City Growth: Livermore And Albuquerque, 1945-1975, Layne Rochelle Karafantis
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This thesis traces the transformation of two cities in the American West: Albuquerque, a medium-sized metropolitan area in the generally low-population state of New Mexico, and Livermore, California, a relatively small town on the fringe of the massive San Francisco Bay Area metropolis. The federal government built nuclear weapons labs in both places after World War II, and as a result, they encountered phenomenal growth. This is not surprising, as authors such as Peter Hall and Ann Markusen have argued that federal installations in the postwar years affected the economies of many western cities. However, this thesis asserts that rural …

Penny Stinkards And Proper Gentlemen: The Demographics Of London's Theatre Audiences, 1567--1642, Brook Adelaide Mcginnis
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Knowing one's audience is crucial to any theatre. How can the marketing staff target new patrons if they know nothing about their immediate audience? This quandary need not be limited to the present. Therefore, the thesis I propose is entitled "Penny Stinkards And Proper Gentlemen: The Demographics of London's Theatre Audiences 1567-1642." I have researched the different facets of Elizabethan life that may have played a factor in attendance. Rather than discussing whom Middleton, Kyd, and Shakespeare were writing for, I have discussed who may have actually attended. Whom one writes for and who ends up in the audience are …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A two-year mark recapture study was conducted on the desert pocket mouse, Chaetodipus penicillatus sobrinus on a relic population within the city of Las Vegas, NV. Demographic information and movement patterns were documented and microhabitat selection analyzed. Chaetodipus. p. sobrinus activity correlated with ambient temperatures, during colder months (Ta = 15°C) C. p. sobrinus became dormant. Sex ratio was 1:1 except during the early spring in which males were favored. Reproduction occurred between March and September each year. Male C. p. sobrinus has significantly larger home range estimates compared to females. The maximum dispersal distance was 133 meters and sex-biased …

Factors Affecting Participation In Senior Center Programs, Betty J. Jefferson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This study investigated whether the factors of relationships, recreation, relatedness, and reward would affect participation in senior centers. Demographic variables of age, sex, and socio-economic status and enabling variables of health, transportation, and income were also investigated. Data were collected from a sample of 57 older adults (aged 55 and over) from three Las Vegas Senior Centers using an instrument developed by the investigator. In terms of demographics, more participants tended to be older, female, and educated. Enabling variables revealed participants …

Differences Between Male And Female Principals In Terms Of Demographics, Perceived Barriers Encountered, And Strategies Used While In Pursuit Of The Principalship, Ann Heywood Angulo
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Without question, women numerically surpass men in the education profession, composing the greater percentage of teachers. Nonetheless, men dominate administrative positions at all levels. According to the literature, the female administrative aspirant faces numerous unique barriers making it more difficult for her to become a school administrator than for her male counterpart. As a result, she must use additional strategies if she intends to be successful in her pursuit of advancement; In light of previous research, a survey was sent to all 182 principals in the Clark County School District which is centered in Las Vegas, Nevada. The purpose of …
