The Development Of Trust For Best Friend Versus Other Friend In Childhood And Adolescent Relationship, Eileen Molzen Dec 1990

The Development Of Trust For Best Friend Versus Other Friend In Childhood And Adolescent Relationship, Eileen Molzen

Student Work

Trust as experienced in childhood and adolescent bestfriend and other friend dyads was examined with respect to age differences, sex differences, and differences inperspective taking. A sample of 109 students in grade levels 4 (9-10 years; N =27), 6 (11-12 years; N = 29), 8 (13-14years; N = 25), and 10 (15-16 years; N = 28), were selected to provide for a cross-section of school age youth. Age and gender differences for trust in regard to the dyadic relationships were investigated using a modified version of Sharabany's Intimacy Scale, and a modified version of the Prisoner's Dilemma Game; the latter …

Peephole Optimization Of Assembly Language Using Regular Expression Pattern Matching., Bill Mahoney Dec 1990

Peephole Optimization Of Assembly Language Using Regular Expression Pattern Matching., Bill Mahoney

Student Work

Producing compilers for high level computer languages is difficult. The early phases of the compiler, syntactical and lexical analysis, are well understood and have been automated. Code generation is more ad-hoc in both design and implementation. The code generators in use may be sufficiently complex that the output could benefit from additional optimization. This thesis describes current efforts . to produce peephole optimizers which perform optimizations on the compiler output. A case is presented for basing optimizations on human written rules. A peephole optimizer generator is presented which reads a rule language which includes regular expressions and produces an executable …

Myers-Briggs Personality Types In Chronic Pain Patients, Linda S. Mckee-Mcalpin

Student Work

This study uses the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator to examine the possibility that there are personality types that are more likely to cope maladaptively, and experience the syndrome of chronic pain, when they are faced with an injury or pain which results in unexpected life changes.

The Chronic Pain sample in this study scored significantly higher than a Normal sample in their preference for Introversion, Sensing and Judging and were significantly more likely to be the personality types ISFJ or ISTJ.

This study also examines the relationship between MMPI depression scores and Myers-Briggs Introversion scores and the results tend to confirm …

Golf Courses In Omaha: A Recreational Geography And Land Use Study, Michael H. Mcintyre Dec 1990

Golf Courses In Omaha: A Recreational Geography And Land Use Study, Michael H. Mcintyre

Student Work

The study inspected the provision of golf courses in Omaha along with surrounding patterns of land use development adjacent to each of the courses. National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) provided guidelines to assess the provision of golf to the city, which determined that Omaha was extensively overserved and overdeveloped. The NRPA does not indicate course type to assess the quantity of courses to adequately serve a community and therefore it was proposed that perhaps Omaha has not been overbuilt in the provison of golf to the community. It was also proposed that the golf course does not stand alone …

Job Satisfaction And Communication Satisfaction In Volunteer Organizations, Paula J. Hazelrigg Dec 1990

Job Satisfaction And Communication Satisfaction In Volunteer Organizations, Paula J. Hazelrigg

Student Work

The connection between job satisfaction and communication satisfaction has been explored in the profit sector (Downs-Hazen 1977, Thiry 1977, Nicholson 1980, Pincus 1984). In the profit sector researchers Goldhaber (1978)Owen, Page, Zimmerman (197 6) and Pincus (19 86) support the vital importance of a positive communication environment to organization effectiveness.

Individual Differences In Trust In Friendships Of Children And Adolescents With Their Best Versus Other Friend, M. Susan Flanagan Snyder Dec 1990

Individual Differences In Trust In Friendships Of Children And Adolescents With Their Best Versus Other Friend, M. Susan Flanagan Snyder

Student Work

This study was concerned with the investigation of gender and psychological types (Extravert-Introvert, Sensation-Intuition, Thinking-Feeling, and Judging- Perceiving) in the application of trust of friendships of children and adolescents in reference to their 'best' and another one friend. The psychological types were determined by the Murphy-Meisgeier Type Indicator for Children (grades 4, 6, and 8) and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator form G (grade 10). The two measures of trust were a modified version of Sharabany Intimacy Scale (Sharabany, 1974), which consisted of a questionnaire of descriptive sentences about friendship, and a measure based on the Prisoner’s Dilemma, consisting of four …

Adolescent Suicide: A Study Of Prediction Variables, Julie M. Ohlund Dec 1990

Adolescent Suicide: A Study Of Prediction Variables, Julie M. Ohlund

Student Work

The purpose of the current study was to examine data to determine if "common demoninators" could define predictor variables for risk assessment of adolescent suicide. The aim of this project was to offer comparisons among hospitalized adolescent suicide "attempters" and "non-attempters", and outpatient adolescent suicide "attempters" and "non-attempters". The data was then compared with data from non-hospitalized adolescents nationally. The study was designed as a systematic investigation of archival data. The data was taken from hospital records including interview forms and psychological evaluations. The subject sample was randomly selected from a larger inpatient/outpatient population. Subjects ranged in age from 12 …

The Use Of Prereferral Interventions: The Student Assistance., Joye Louise Mcleod Dec 1990

The Use Of Prereferral Interventions: The Student Assistance., Joye Louise Mcleod

Student Work

The national special education mandate, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, also known as Public Law 94-142, was enacted by Congress in 1975. Since that time many politicians, education agencies, and taxpayers, as well as some educators, have become alarmed at what has been perceived as the overexpansion of special education services and their skyrocketing costs. Fiscal problems in education account in part for the growing concerns about the expansion of special education. Limited state and federal resources are available for funding special education. Taxpayer revolts, particularly regarding local property taxes, limit the taxation levies available to finance education.

Holocene Climatic Change In The Central United States Inferred From Paleoecological Data., Raymond P. Latimer Dec 1990

Holocene Climatic Change In The Central United States Inferred From Paleoecological Data., Raymond P. Latimer

Student Work

The Holocene in the central U.S. is the period of time since the retreat of the last continental ice sheets. It has been a 10,000 year period of climate variability. In North America, Holocene climatic fluctuations have been detected in the paleoenvironmental record of the central United States. The most evident climactic fluctuation has been the mid-Holocene Climatic Optimum, or Altithermal. The Altithermal provided the warmest and driest post-glacial climatic conditions which lasted from ca. 8500-4000 years B.P.

The Search For Branchio-Oto-Renal Syndrome On Human Chromosomes 1 And 8., Kimberly Kay Comeau Dec 1990

The Search For Branchio-Oto-Renal Syndrome On Human Chromosomes 1 And 8., Kimberly Kay Comeau

Student Work

Branchio-oto-renal (BOR) syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder in which affected individuals may have conductive, sensorineural or mixed hearing loss, preauricular pits, structural defects of the outer, middle or inner ear, fistulas and cysts of the second bronchial arc and renal anomalies ranging from mild hypoplasia to complete agenesis. There is wide variation in expression of the syndrome and not all symptoms are present in all carriers of the gene. Less frequent systems (e.g. lacrimal duct stenosis) have been described.

The Phytogeomorphology Of The Niobrara Region Near Meadville, Nebraska., Barbara J. Pollack Friskopp Dec 1990

The Phytogeomorphology Of The Niobrara Region Near Meadville, Nebraska., Barbara J. Pollack Friskopp

Student Work

One of the most phytogeomorphologically unique areas of Nebraska occurs along the Niobrara River Valley north of the community of Ainsworth. Not only is this an area where the Rocky Mountain, Eastern Deciduous and Northern Boreal Forest converge, but it is also an area of relatively recent geomorphic activity. Landslides are known to have occurred here; there is evidence of very recent, active movement as well as older, stabilized landslides. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between plant communities and geomorphic history. Three 100 m long transects were surveyed in each of the five study areas, …

Integration Of Distributed Expert Systems: An Open System Approach., Semir Al-Schamma Dec 1990

Integration Of Distributed Expert Systems: An Open System Approach., Semir Al-Schamma

Student Work

The integrated use of expert systems distributed on a network is a topic of practical importance. Through the proper integration methods, powerful expert systems could emerge. Several approaches exist for distributed problem solving, but most of them assume that the individual agents possess sufficient knowledge and skills to communicate and negotiate results and plans. In practice, however, what is needed is a simple, easy-to-implement, approach that allows the integrated use of a distributed (probably existing) set of expert systems or agents. In this thesis the OSDES approach (which stands for Open System of Distributed Expert Systems) is presented. It entails …

Community-Based Learning: A Study Of A Model Dropout Prevention Program, Robert D. Shumer Nov 1990

Community-Based Learning: A Study Of A Model Dropout Prevention Program, Robert D. Shumer

School K-12

Dropout prevention is a major concern of school districts throughout the country. In Los Angeles it is estimated that 39% of students fail to graduate from high school. Nationwide, the rate is not too much different, especially in inner city communities where large numbers of Hispanic and African-American youth attend school. While dropout rates have been traditionally high for decades, people continue to ask, why? Many billions of dollars have been spent trying to answer this question and many programs have been developed which attempt to address some of these problems. No one has come up with a comprehensive answer …

Perceptions Of Fairness In The Frustration Effect: An Attributional Analysis, David T. Van Dyke Nov 1990

Perceptions Of Fairness In The Frustration Effect: An Attributional Analysis, David T. Van Dyke

Student Work

Theories of both distributive (Adams, 1963) and procedural justice (Thibaut & Walker, 1975) have been demonstrated to be accurate in describing subjective evaluations of fairness in a wide variety of circumstances. However, a phenomenon known as the frustration effect (e.g. Folger, 1977) results in perceptions of fairness that are incongruent with the predictions of these two theories. This study attempts to explain the discrepant results in terms of attribution theory as it was proposed by Weiner (1985). By manipulating and measuring the attributions made by subjects, the attributional explanation was tested. The results of this experiment were not supportive of …

National Service: The Overview, Unknown

Service Learning, General

An INDEPENDENT SECTOR national survey report indicates that many Americans are not being asked to volunteer. Among the 41 percent who were asked to volunteer in the past year, 87 percent actually did. Among the 57 percent of those who were not asked, only 30 percent volunteered. These findings suggest that if more Americans are asked to volunteer, the proportion of the population that volunteers can be measurably increased.

Preliminary results of a statewide survey mailed in late September lo all Nebraska municipalities indicate that if Initiative Petition #405 were to pass, most municipalities would need to reduce services and employees. More than 50 percent of the communities responding had increased their 1990-91 budgets by at least 5 percent for police, fire, parks and recreation, public works and general administration. Dr. B. J. Reed, Chairman of UNO's Public Administration Department, points out that the survey also indicates a number of cities, and especially small villages, are not prepared to deal with the consequences if Initiative #405 were to pass.
