Coverage Error Properties Of Smartphone And Smartphone Operating System Ownership On Web Surveys: A Total Survey Error Perspective, Angelica Phillips Jul 2023

Coverage Error Properties Of Smartphone And Smartphone Operating System Ownership On Web Surveys: A Total Survey Error Perspective, Angelica Phillips

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

While smartphone ownership rates near 90% of the US population, differences in the types of people who do or do not own smartphones may contribute to coverage error biases within smartphone-exclusive web surveys. Therefore, understanding the predictors of smartphone ownership is of interest for survey researchers. Further, differential ownership of smartphone operating systems (OS) such as Android OS and iOS across groups of the population is also of interest for researchers who administer smartphone application surveys which are only compatible with one OS. However, little research has assessed differential rates of smartphone ownership over time nor has any research to …

All records were purposively sampled. The instrument for data collection was records of users in the Readers and E-resources. The records were face validated by the researchers. Frequency distribution and histogram were used to analyzed the research questions. …

Split Classification Model For Complex Clustered Data, Katherine Gerot Mar 2022

Split Classification Model For Complex Clustered Data, Katherine Gerot

Honors Theses

Classification in high-dimensional data has generated tremendous interest in a multitude of fields. Data in higher dimensions often tend to reside in non-Euclidean metric space. This prevents Euclidean-based classification methodologies, such as regression, from reliably modeling the data. Many proposed models rely on computationally-complex embedding to convert the data to a more usable format. Others, namely the Support Vector Machine, rely on kernel manipulation to implicitly describe the "feature space" to arrive at a non-linear decision boundary. The proposed methodology in this paper seeks to classify complex data in a relatively computationally-simple and explainable manner.

Using Stability To Select A Shrinkage Method, Dean Dustin May 2020

Using Stability To Select A Shrinkage Method, Dean Dustin

Department of Statistics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Work

Shrinkage methods are estimation techniques based on optimizing expressions to find which variables to include in an analysis, typically a linear regression. The general form of these expressions is the sum of an empirical risk plus a complexity penalty based on the number of parameters. Many shrinkage methods are known to satisfy an ‘oracle’ property meaning that asymptotically they select the correct variables and estimate their coefficients efficiently. In Section 1.2, we show oracle properties in two general settings. The first uses a log likelihood in place of the empirical risk and allows a general class of penalties. The second …

Eeg Reinvestigations Of Visual Statistical Learning For Faces, Scenes, And Objects, Mei Grace Behrendt, P. Cheng Lim, Aaron T. Halvorsen, Karl Kuntzelman, Matthew R. Johnson

UCARE Research Products

The objective of this ongoing, replication study is to understand temporal and spatial patterns in our environment by using the technique of electroencephalography (EEG). Visual statistical learning (VSL) helps us to understand conditional probabilities from our environments. This concept is why we know that chairs are located under tables, not above. The goal of this study is to understand whether participants can unconsciously associate pairs of items (faces, scenes, and objects) from their short-term memory. Strong pairs become more similar to each other, as compared to weak pairs, which become less similar. In the main task, participants saw items appear …

Gibson, Yuzhen Zhou, Hamed Gholizadeh, Fatima Amor Tenorio, Daran Rudnick, Derek M. Heeren, Matthew F. Mccabe, Matteo Ziliani, Zhenong Jin, Kaiyu Guan, Ming Pan, John Gates, Brian Wardlow

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Foreknowledge of the spatiotemporal drivers of crop yield would provide a valuable source of information to optimize on-farm inputs and maximize profitability. In recent years, an abundance of spatial data providing information on soils, topography, and vegetation condition have become available from both proximal and remote sensing platforms. Given the wide range of data costs (between USD $0−50/ha), it is important to understand where often limited financial resources should be directed to optimize field production. Two key questions arise. First, will these data actually aid in better fine-resolution yield prediction to help optimize crop management and farm economics? Second, what …

Automated Outlier Detection In Crime Data Using Programming, Aidan Connolly Mar 2018

Automated Outlier Detection In Crime Data Using Programming, Aidan Connolly

Honors Theses

After the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police Department began publishing their Daily Crime and Fire Log online, journalists and other members of the public have been able to view updates almost instantly. They can see what incidents have been reported so far for that day, and they can view any day back to 2005. Using an advanced search, they can also filter the data by date range, location or crime type. However, there is no way to analyze the data. There’s no way to see how crime reports have evolved over time. Other people have developed programs to look at past …

Favorable Team Scores Under The Team-Based Learning Paradigm: A Statistical Artifact?, Trevor Hefley, Andrew J. Tyre Mar 2012

Favorable Team Scores Under The Team-Based Learning Paradigm: A Statistical Artifact?, Trevor Hefley, Andrew J. Tyre

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

Team-based learning (TBL) is a highly structured method of active small group learning and consists of identical tests taken individually and in groups. We reviewed literature to determine the scoring methods used for individual and group testing. Twenty-eight percent of the studies used multiple choice formats for the individual test and formats that allow for immediate feedback and corrective scoring for the group test. We calculated the expected value of both individual and group tests and found that by default groups will score higher than individuals, even if there is no actual difference in performance. We urge TBL practitioners to …

Invited Commentary: Dietary Pattern Analysis, Fumiaki Imamura, Paul F. Jaques Jan 2011

Invited Commentary: Dietary Pattern Analysis, Fumiaki Imamura, Paul F. Jaques

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The analytic approaches used in nutritional epidemiology for dietary pattern analyses share common characteristics with those of genetic epidemiology. In this issue of the Journal, Gorst-Rasmussen et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2011;173(10):1097–1104) discuss one such approach. Application of methods used in genetic pattern analyses to nutritional epidemiology could prove valuable but raises important issues that need to be considered because dietary and genetic studies often address different types of questions in analyzing interrelated variables. These different aims require statistical methods that assume different characteristics of the underlying patterns. The authors briefly describe such differences to facilitate interpretation and …

Summary Brief: Unl Libraries 2003/04 – 2007/08 Acquisitions: Performance Of Non-Serial Volumes Available For Checkout, David C. Tyler Dec 2009

Summary Brief: Unl Libraries 2003/04 – 2007/08 Acquisitions: Performance Of Non-Serial Volumes Available For Checkout, David C. Tyler

UNL Libraries: White Papers

The activity of the included five years’ worth of receipts was analyzed for both degree of idleness and extent of use. Analyses were conducted upon the collection of receipts as a whole and upon the collection disaggregated into broad subject categories and into Library of Congress (LC) subclasses. When reading the report to follow, one should keep in mind that statistics may sometimes mask as much as they reveal, especially when one is dealing with non-discrete category data. For example, several LC subclasses (e.g., HC = Economic Theory and Demography) cover multiple topical areas, so analysis at the LC …

How Do You Interpret A Confidence Interval?, Paul Savory Jan 2008

How Do You Interpret A Confidence Interval?, Paul Savory

Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Instructional Materials

A confidence interval (CI) is an interval estimate of a population parameter. Instead of estimating the parameter by a single value, a point estimate, an interval likely to cover the parameter is developed. Many student incorrectly interpret the meaning of a confidence interval. This paper offers a quick overview of how to correctly interpret a confidence interval.

Why Divide By (N-1) For Sample Standard Deviation?, Paul Savory Jan 2008

Why Divide By (N-1) For Sample Standard Deviation?, Paul Savory

Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Instructional Materials

In statistics, the sample standard deviation is a widely used measure of the variability or dispersion of a data set. The standard deviation of a data set is the square root of its variance. In calculating the sample standard deviation, the divisor is the number of samples in the data set minus one (n-1) rather than n. This often confuses students. This paper offers a quick overview of why the divisor is (n-1) for calculating the sample standard deviation.

Sound Survey Designs Can Facilitate Integrating Stream Monitoring Data Across Multiple Programs, David P. Larsen, Anthony R. Olsen, Steven H. Lanigan, Chris Moyer, Kim K. Jones, Thomas M. Kincaid Jan 2007

Sound Survey Designs Can Facilitate Integrating Stream Monitoring Data Across Multiple Programs, David P. Larsen, Anthony R. Olsen, Steven H. Lanigan, Chris Moyer, Kim K. Jones, Thomas M. Kincaid

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Staff Publications

Multiple agencies in the Pacific Northwest monitor the condition of stream networks or their watersheds. Some agencies use a stream ‘‘network’’ perspective to report on the fraction or length of the network that either meets or violates particular criteria. Other agencies use a ‘‘watershed’’ perspective to report on the health or condition of watersheds. The agencies often use the same indicators and measurement protocols for data collection and often conduct monitoring in overlapping geographic regions. In these situations, agencies would like to combine data across different monitoring studies in a statistically sound manner to make regional estimates of condition. Three …

Statistics For Wildlifers: How Much And What Kind?, Douglas H. Johnson, Terry L. Shaffer, Wesley E. Newton Jan 2001

Statistics For Wildlifers: How Much And What Kind?, Douglas H. Johnson, Terry L. Shaffer, Wesley E. Newton

USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center

Quantitative methods are playing increasingly important roles in wildlife ecology and, ultimately, management. This change poses a challenge for wildlife practitioners and students who are not well educated in mathematics and statistics. Here we give our opinions on what wildlife biologists should know about statistics, while recognizing that not everyone is inclined mathematically. For those who are, we recommend that they take mathematics coursework at least through calculus and linear algebra. They should take statistics courses that are focused conceptually, stressing the "why" rather than the "how" of doing statistics. For less mathematically oriented wildlifers, introductory classes in statistical techniques …

G84-727 Financing State And Local Government In Nebraska -- An Overview (Revised March 1992), A.L. (Roy) Frederick

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This is one of a series of NebGuides on financing state and local government. This publication provides an overview of key trends and issues.

Government's primary purpose is to provide public services. In the United States these services are provided by federal, state and local units of government. Sometimes one entity has full responsibility for providing for a common need, as the federal government does for national defense. Often, however, responsibilities are shared, as in public education.

A wide array of public services are provided because citizens have asked for them. Sometimes it is a minority of citizens who have …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This is one of a series of NebGuides on financing state and local government. This publication focuses on social services.

Social services programs in Nebraska provide public assistance to individuals who, for reasons beyond their control, are unable to support themselves. Public assistance programs are of two broad types. The first type provides cash assistance directly to those who qualify. All other programs involve payments to vendors (providers) who, in turn, provide needed services.
