How Gender Affirming Care Affects The Current Sex Estimation Standards In Forensic Anthropology: A Preliminary Study, Dakota Taylor May 2024

How Gender Affirming Care Affects The Current Sex Estimation Standards In Forensic Anthropology: A Preliminary Study, Dakota Taylor

Anthropology Department: Theses

Current sex estimation standards in forensic anthropology are based on individuals whose gender matches their biological/osteological sex, also known as Cisgendered individuals. Recently, transgender individuals have started to become more common in the forensic context due to the increase in hate crimes and violence. This research builds upon past research done on how facial feminization surgery can affect both visual and metric methods, where it was found that forensic anthropologists should rely on the visual methods if they suspect someone to be transgender due to it being more accurate and being able to clearly state the scars left on the …

Non-Tariff Measures And Standards In Trade And Global Value Chains, John C. Beghin, Miet Maertens, Johan Swinnen Feb 2015

Non-Tariff Measures And Standards In Trade And Global Value Chains, John C. Beghin, Miet Maertens, Johan Swinnen

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

We assess the literature on public and private quality standards and their impact in food markets, international trade, and global supply chains. We focus on their effects on welfare, trade, industrial organization, and labor markets and with special attention to the North-South context. We also attempt to better characterize when these measures constitute protectionism, a complicate task. We look at studies investigating public and private standards and across various quantitative approaches and countries. These standards have complex effects. The evidence is mixed regarding standards as catalyst for or impediment against trade and development, reflecting the complexity of these effects and …

7th-12th Grade English/Language Arts Teachers And Their Classroom Grading Practices: Investigating The Use Of Standards-Based Grading In Nebraska’S Rural Classrooms, Summer E. Stephens Nov 2010

7th-12th Grade English/Language Arts Teachers And Their Classroom Grading Practices: Investigating The Use Of Standards-Based Grading In Nebraska’S Rural Classrooms, Summer E. Stephens

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A problem exists in grading practices accurately measuring student achievement. Both students’ academic achievements and nonacademic factors, such as effort, homework completion, and behaviors continue to factor into grades. This combination can lead to inaccurate representation of true academic ability, rendering a grade useless. While assessment and grading practices continue to be a conversation in most education circles, the implementation of standards-based grading practices in high school English/Language Arts classrooms varies widely. Past studies have shown that grades have provided feedback and been used to motivate and rank students. Future research was needed to address the following research question: How …

An Examination Of Changes In Program Offerings And Program Enrollments In Selected Nebraska High Schools During The Era Of Standards-Based Reform, Kenneth E. Schroeder

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this study was to examine whether or not there were changes in certain characteristics of educational programs in grades 9-12 Nebraska public high schools during the era of standards-based reform. This purpose was accomplished by testing for changes between the 1993-94 school year and the 2007-08 school year in the courses high schools offered and in the courses students took. The total program and each of ten designated subject areas that comprise the program were examined. Those ten designated subject areas were language arts, science, social science, mathematics, foreign language, vocational education, visual and performing arts, personal …

Proposed Standards And Guidelines For Private Nature Reserves In The Northern Great Plains, Curtis Freese, Dawn Montanye, Steve Forrest Apr 2010

Proposed Standards And Guidelines For Private Nature Reserves In The Northern Great Plains, Curtis Freese, Dawn Montanye, Steve Forrest

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

More than three-quarters of the land in the Northern Great Plains is privately owned and less than 2% of the region is in public protected areas; therefore, sound private-land management is critical for restoring and conserving the region’s biodiversity. Although considerable progress has been made in recent years in fostering and assembling nature reserves on private lands in various regions of the world, this approach has received little attention in North America, including the Northern Great Plains. We review here recommendations, trends and issues related to private protected areas globally and in Canada and the United States. We then discuss …

Standards Vs. 'Standard' Knowledge, Edmund T. Hamann Jul 2008

Standards Vs. 'Standard' Knowledge, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This chapter (one of 40 in the book "Everyday Antiracism", edited by Mica Pollock) matches the format of other entries in the book by providing direct, research-grounded advice for ways of reducing racism in American schools and reducing its damage for students. This chapter focuses on the de facto recognized skills of two English learners (ELLs) who were kept in an intermediate class because of their teacher's need to have their assistance as interpreters, but highlights how this linguistic competence actually de jure counted against these learners making their progress appear slower than it was.

The outdoor environment gives teachers a perfect location and the tools to teach and meet standards in the early childhood classroom.

Setting Ubvri Photometric Zero-Points Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey Ugriz Magnitudes, Taylor S. Chonis, C. Martin Gaskell Jan 2008

Setting Ubvri Photometric Zero-Points Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey Ugriz Magnitudes, Taylor S. Chonis, C. Martin Gaskell

C. Martin Gaskell Publications

We discuss the use of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) ugriz point-spread function (PSF) photometry for setting the zero points of UBVRI CCD images. From a comparison with the Landolt (1992, AJ, 104, 340) standards and our own photometry we find that there is a fairly abrupt change in B, V, R, and I zero points around g, r, i ∼ 14.5, and in the U zero point at u ∼ 16. These changes correspond to where there is significant interpolation due to saturation in the SDSS PSF fluxes. There also seems to be another, much smaller systematic effect …

Specialized Accreditation In Collegiate Aviation: An Analysis Of The Perceived Value Of Specialized Accreditation By The Aviation Accreditation Board International, Charles Daniel Prather Dec 2007

Specialized Accreditation In Collegiate Aviation: An Analysis Of The Perceived Value Of Specialized Accreditation By The Aviation Accreditation Board International, Charles Daniel Prather

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Council on Aviation Accreditation (CAA) was established in 1988 in response to the need for formal, specialized accreditation of aviation academic programs. The first aviation programs were accredited by the CAA in 1992, and as of November 2007, the newly renamed Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI) recognized a total 78 accredited programs at 26 institutions worldwide. Although the number of aviation academic programs accredited by the AABI has steadily grown, there are currently only 26 percent of UAA member institutions with AABI accredited programs.

In an effort to understand the current status of specialized accreditation in collegiate aviation and …

Design And Standards For Genetic Evaluation Of Swine Seedstock Populations, T. J. Baas, R. N. Goodwin, L. L. Christian, R. K. Johnson, O. W. Robison, J. W. Mabry, K. Clark, M. Tokach, S. Henry, P. J. Berger

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to describe a program for evaluation of seedstock populations in the swine industry. Differences among seedstock populations for economically important traits must be identified in order for pork producers to efficiently use available genetic resources. National genetic evaluation programs have the potential to identify the important differences among populations and to increase the rate of genetic improvement in a population. Program results provide performance benchmarks that stimulate testing and selection procedures by seedstock suppliers that further increase the rate of genetic improvement. A Terminal Sire Line Genetic Evaluation Program was designed and conducted in …

Have Population Increases Of Large Birds Outpaced Airworthiness Standards For Civil Aircraft?, Richard A. Dolbeer, Paul Eschenfelder Feb 2002

Have Population Increases Of Large Birds Outpaced Airworthiness Standards For Civil Aircraft?, Richard A. Dolbeer, Paul Eschenfelder

USDA Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Bird-aircraft collisions (bird strikes) are an increasing safety and economic concern to the USA civil aviation industry, costing over $400 million each year. One approach to reducing risks associated with strikes is to require commercial aircraft components to meet certain standards of safe performance in the event of a bird strike. The Federal Aviation Administration has developed airworthiness standards for airframes, windshields and engines using a single 4-lb (1.82-kg) bird mass as the maximum that must be tested (with the exception of a single 8-lb bird for the empennage, 6-lb bird for certain mid-sized engines that may be developed in …

Beliefs Of Science Teachers Toward The Teaching Of Science/Technological/Social Issues: Are We Addressing National Standards?, Jon E. Pedersen, Samuel Totten Oct 2001

Beliefs Of Science Teachers Toward The Teaching Of Science/Technological/Social Issues: Are We Addressing National Standards?, Jon E. Pedersen, Samuel Totten

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

As science educators, we must view the changing nature of society brought on by technology and the global nature of society as an impetus to reexamine the nature of science instruction. We have been bestowed with the responsibility to educate students on a variety of topics that less than two decades ago did not exist. Many of these social issues are controversial in nature and are directly linked to the local, regional, national, and global communities in which we exist. However, including these social issues in the extant curriculum of science has, at best, been limited. This is true even …

Recognizing Actuarial Assumptions, Victoria Stachowski, Alice Underwood Jan 1999

Recognizing Actuarial Assumptions, Victoria Stachowski, Alice Underwood

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993-2006)

As assumptions underlie every aspect of actuarial calculations, actuaries must be aware of the assumptions they are using and understand their importance and the possible effects of changing assumptions on the results of their calculations. This paper explores the nature of assumptions in: (i) mathematical models, (ii) data selection, (iii) actuarial methods, and (iv) the business environment. We examine reasons for making assumptions such as convenience, tradition, indications in the data, or lack of data. In addition, we discuss (i) how actuaries can judge whether these reasons are sufficient; (ii) methods that can help actuaries quantify the impact of their …

The Status Of Nuisance Wildlife Damage Control In The States, Kristen P. La Vine, Mark J. Reeff, Jodi A. Dlcamillo, Gary S. Kama Jan 1996

The Status Of Nuisance Wildlife Damage Control In The States, Kristen P. La Vine, Mark J. Reeff, Jodi A. Dlcamillo, Gary S. Kama

Proceedings of the Seventeenth Vertebrate Pest Conference 1996

State fish and wildlife agencies and nuisance wildlife control operators must work together whether or not they actively choose to. In this paper, their relationship is likened to a marriage between two (not so likely) partners. In an attempt to assess the status of this relationship the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, The Wildlife Society's Wildlife Damage Management Working Group, and the National Animal Damage Control Association developed a survey that addressed the level of state agencies' oversight of nuisance wildlife control operators (NWCOs). Responses were received from 47 states, 1 territory, and 17 ADC state offices. This …

Ec33-136 Corn In Nebraska, P.H. Stewart, D.L. Gross, T.A. Kiesselbach Jan 1933

Ec33-136 Corn In Nebraska, P.H. Stewart, D.L. Gross, T.A. Kiesselbach

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Corn is Nebraska's most important crop. Of the nearly 19 million acres under cultivation in the state, over 10 million acres or more than 50 percent is normally planted to corn. This is three times the acreage of wheat, four times that of oats, and ten times that of barley. The 10-year average acre yield of corn for this state is 25.8 bushels compared with 26.9 bushels for the entire United States. Nebraska, with an average annual crop of approximately 258 million bushels, usually ranks third among all states in the total production of corn, being exceeded by Iowa and …

Ice Cream Ingredients, H. P. Davis, B. Masurovsky, J. A. Luithly Jan 1924

Ice Cream Ingredients, H. P. Davis, B. Masurovsky, J. A. Luithly

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Ice cream is truly a frozen dairy product although other products than cream may enter into its make-up. The different ingredients that go into the ice cream mix exist in different qualities, grades, concentrations, and forms and it is desirable, therefore, for the ice cream maker to know something of them if a successful product is to be made.
