The Species Concept: A Semantic Review, Benjamin H. Burma Dec 1949

The Species Concept: A Semantic Review, Benjamin H. Burma

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

In some respects, it is extremely unfortunate that names are ever attached either to ideas or objects. The false attachment of names to ideas or objects similar but not identical with the original can work harm far exceeding the benefits conferred by having a convenient label. The name "species" has come to such a state. As we shall see, a species, be it plant or animal, is a fiction, a mental construct without objective existence. Animal, and plant, lines of descent exist in a four-dimensional continuum. To set up species in this continuous line of descent, we must chop it …

Effect Of Storage Temperatures On Triumph Seed Potatoes Used For The Early Crop In The South And In Central Nebraska, H. O. Werner Nov 1949

Effect Of Storage Temperatures On Triumph Seed Potatoes Used For The Early Crop In The South And In Central Nebraska, H. O. Werner

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

During the decade 1931-1940 it became increasingly apparent that some factor (or factors) besides disease was responsible for much of the variation in yields produced by lots of certified seed potatoes planted in commercial fields and comparative trial plots in the South during midwinter. This bulletin reports investigations into the method of storing western Nebraska seed potatoes as a means of improving the production of the early crop of Triumphs in the Gulf Coast States.

The Structure And Reproduction Of Corn, T. A. Kiesselbach

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

The primary purpose of this paper is to summarize investigations concerning the structure and reproduction of the corn plant (Zea mays L.). Because of wide interest in the reproductive process in connection with breeding and genetic studies the floral development, fertilization, and embryology are especially stressed. The morphology and development of the vegetative organs is also included. The botanical relationship, origin, genetics and breeding of corn are briefly considered.

Liquid Loss From Glass Jars Processed In The Pressure Cooker, Arnold E. Baragar Nov 1949

Liquid Loss From Glass Jars Processed In The Pressure Cooker, Arnold E. Baragar

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

Home canners and extension home economists have inquired frequently why much liquid is sometimes lost from glass jars of food processed in the pressure cooker. At an extension service Home Canning Research Conference held at Kansas City, December, 1946, state extension agents requested research on this home canning problem, because no published reports were available. This bulletin is a report of experiments with glass jars processed in a pressure cooker to determine (1) conditions that allow much liquid to be expelled from jars, (2) conditions that reduce liquid loss to a negligible amount, and (3) the physical conditions involved in …

Observations Of The Life Cycle And Larval Development Of Paruterina Candelabraria (Goeze, 1782) (Cestoda: Dilepididae), Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Paruterina candelabraria (Goeze, 1782) is parasitic in owls in Europe and North America, and appears to be the most frequently encountered cestode occurring in strigiform birds (Wolffhugel, 1900; Rausch, 1948). It is the purpose of this paper to present observations on the larval development and life cycle of P. candelabraria. Apparently nothing is known concerning the life cycles of cestodes of the genus Paruterina Fuhrmann, 1906, most of which occur in passeriform birds.

The Occurrence Of Contracaecum Travassosi (Nematoda) In North America [Research Notes], Banner Bill Morgan, Robert L. Rausch, Everett Schiller

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Seven specimens of a nematode (five males and two females) of the genus Contracaecum were collected from the ventriculus of Pandion haliaetus carolinensis (Gmelin) (osprey) captured at Greenville, Ohio. After a comparison with C. travassosi described by Gutierrez (1943. Sobre la morfología de una nueva especie de "Contracaecum" (Nematoda: Ascaroidea) Rev. Brasil. Biol. 3: 159-172) from the cormorant (Phalacrocorax albiventer) collected at the San Jose light-house, Territory of Chubut, Argentina, our material has been assigned to that species. So far as the writers have been able to determine, this is the first record of the species …

A Filter Paper "Chromatopile", Herschel Mitchell, Francis A. Haskins Sep 1949

A Filter Paper "Chromatopile", Herschel Mitchell, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The application of one- and two-dimensional paper chromatography to the separation of small amounts of many kinds of compounds has become a well-established and useful technique (1, 2, 3, 5, 6). In general these methods do not handle sufficiently large quantities of materials for isolation and chemical identification. Large columns of starch and other materials have been used satisfactorily for handling larger quantities of mixtures (4). Starch columns proved to be unsatisfactory, how- ever, for isolation of certain substances under investigation in this laboratory. As a consequence, a new and simple apparatus and technique have been developed, using …

Quantitative Study Of Root Systems In Different Soil Types, J. E. Weaver, R. W. Darland Aug 1949

Quantitative Study Of Root Systems In Different Soil Types, J. E. Weaver, R. W. Darland

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Study of soil-root relations of various crop plants and range grasses has lagged far behind the pressing need for an understanding of these relationships. Little progress in devising new methods for such study, at least methods that have been widely used in the field, has been made since the extensive researches by the direct method, using trench and hand pick, employed by Weaver (1, 2) during the period 1919 to 1926. This lack of a quantitative approach to comparative root studies in various soil types has undoubtedly been a chief reason for the dearth of more definite information on this …

Signal Corps Technical Intelligence, A Brief History, Chester A. Hall Capt., Robert Bolin , Depositor

Department of Defense Military Intelligence

At the time that this was written, technical intelligence was intelligence about foreign weapons and equipment and about organizations in foreign armies analogous to the technical services. The modern US Army vision of the technical intelligence developed during World War II. The army technical services became responsible for technical intelligence. The technical services were bureaus which supplied weapons, equipment, and services to the army, managed the careers of officers in a particular branch, trained specialists, and organized and trained special purpose military units. There were a number of technical services including the Chemical Warfare Service, the Medical Department, the Ordnance …

Pink Rot Of Potatoes Caused By Phytophthora Erythroseptica Pethyb., R. W. Goss Jun 1949

Pink Rot Of Potatoes Caused By Phytophthora Erythroseptica Pethyb., R. W. Goss

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

During the summer of 1943 reports were received of rotted tubers occurring in fields of early potatoes in central Nebraska. An estimated 10 per cent of the tubers were found rotted in some fields on August 5. In November and December of the same year the late-producing area of western Nebraska reported the occurrence, at harvest and in storage, of tuber rots differing from those previously recorded for that area. Specimens appeared similar to those observed during the summer in central Nebraska. Isolations were made and pathogenicity tests were conducted both on tubers and growing plants to study the influence …

A Critical Study Of North American Cestodes Of The Genus Andrya With Special Reference To A. Macrocephala Douthitt, 1915. (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae), Robert L. Rausch, Everett Schiller

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Eight species of cestodes belonging to the genus Andrya Railliet, 1883, have been described from North American rodents. To the present time, 6 of these have been considered valid (A. primordialis Douthitt, 1915; A. macrocephala Douthitt, 1915; A. neotomae Voge, 1946; A. microti Hansen, 1947; A. sciuri Rausch, 1947; A. ondatrae Rausch, 1948). The genus Andrya was separated by Kirschenblatt (1938) into two subgenera, depending upon the presence or absence of a prostate gland. Of the North American species, only one (A. primordialis) possesses a prostate gland. Since we are concerned essentially with the other 5 closely-related …
