Abstract

Background: Substance abuse among adolescents is one of the most serious social health problems in the United States. The prevalence of alcohol use in adolescents is as high as 80%, while opioid overdose deaths among adolescents have risen by greater than 50% in the last 10 years. Alcohol, tobacco, and other substance use has also increased among youth and is not being properly evaluated in the pediatric hospital setting. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the use of a substance abuse screening tool with SBIRT trained staff in the pediatric emergency room setting.

Intimate Partner Violence Education For High School Students, Morgan Foster

Problem Adolescents are at risk for experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV). As early as seventh grade, over half of adolescents have reported being in a romantic relationship. Adolescent screening for and education of IPV is minimal, and only the Healthy Relationships Quiz developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [HHS] screens young adolescents across all aspects of IPV, including psychological and sexual violence. The purpose of this project was to develop an IPV education plan for high school students in a health course.

Methods An educational lesson plan for IPV was created for high school teachers.

Abstract

Problem Adolescents are contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) with half of all new STIs occurring in those aged 15-24 years old. The American Academy of Pediatrics, recommended all sexually active adolescents be screened for STIs. Incorporation of a sexual behavior assessment may assist providers with identifying STI risk.

Methods A descriptive design comparing three cohorts of adolescents presenting for a well-exam. The cohorts analyzed were: urine screening on all adolescents, urine screening for only those reporting sexual activity, and a self-administered sexual history questionnaire tool, based on the HEEADSSS psychosocial assessments.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between hope and career development in students with emotional disturbances or behavior disorders who were attending an alternative middle and high school. Additionally, this researcher wanted to see if students’ participation in career counseling had an interactive effect. A total of 65 male and female middle and high school students were recruited to complete the Hope Scale, Children’s Hope Scale, My Vocational Situation, and a demographic information sheet. The purpose of this concurrent mixed methods study was to investigate the potential of yoga to increase positive psychological health, decrease depressive symptoms, and increase flourishing in nonclinical high school students. Yoga was incorporated as part of a physical education (PE) course at a suburban high school with high school students (n = 27). Another section of the same course without yoga served as the control group (n = 38). Adolescents must enter adult health care services at age 18, yet most are not ready and have not mastered daily self management of their type 1 diabetes. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of a transition planning intervention, focused on educating adolescent/parent dyads about diabetes self management in preparation for the transition from pediatric to adult health care, using a newly developed transition plan and framework. Despite advances in medical science, the prevalence of obesity in the US has more than doubled in the last three decades, to over 72 million people (CDC, 2009). The purpose of this project was to pilot an exercise program that would increase physical activity in a group of adolescents and one of their parents or guardians. A convenient sample of 10 adults and eight adolescents returned surveys and exercised through the entire eight weeks (N = 18).
