Evolutionary Dynamics Of Speciation And Extinction, Dawn Michelle King
Evolutionary Dynamics Of Speciation And Extinction, Dawn Michelle King
Dissertations
Presented here is an interdisciplinary study that draws connections between the fields of physics, mathematics, and evolutionary biology. Importantly, as we move through the Anthropocene Epoch, where human-driven climate change threatens biodiversity, understanding how an evolving population responds to extinction stress could be key to saving endangered ecosystems. With a neutral, agent-based model that incorporates the main principles of Darwinian evolution, such as heritability, variability, and competition, the dynamics of speciation and extinction is investigated. The simulated organisms evolve according to the reaction-diffusion rules of the 2D directed percolation universality class. Offspring are generated according to one of three reproduction …
Transformational Learning: An Investigation Of The Emotional Maturation Advancement In Learners Aged 50 And Older, Susan Lorraine Lundry
Transformational Learning: An Investigation Of The Emotional Maturation Advancement In Learners Aged 50 And Older, Susan Lorraine Lundry
Dissertations
Human beings have spent much time and effort in trying to understand themselves, others, and their world. Mankind uses intellect when trying to understand life but the majority of people continue to encounter frustration, confusion, and a variety of obstacles when dealing with daily challenges and people. Theorists and researchers understand that successful existence requires more than mere knowledge; it requires a level of understanding, a form of wisdom foreign to the bulk of the populace. The missing ingredient for this kind of wisdom is the ability to ‘know thyself,’ which is the beginning of establishing a higher level of …
Transformative Leadership: Building Social Equity Through Individualized Professional Development, Curtis David Gunn
Transformative Leadership: Building Social Equity Through Individualized Professional Development, Curtis David Gunn
Dissertations
Developing social justice awareness is a challenging task. Many educational institutions have limited discourse related to race and equity. This autoethnography examines one leader’s attempt to become a transformational leader by having ongoing conversations about race and racism, applying the individualized transformative model of professional development during conversations, utilizing a peer advisory group for feedback, and reflecting on the results. Findings reveal the most important element for growth is the act of engaging in the conversation regardless of one’s perceived level of competence. The individualized transformative model of professional development was demonstrated to be an effective approach to professional development.

Women, Sex, And God: Women's Sexuality And The Internalization Of Religious Messages, Petra Sterling Blum
Dissertations
Grounded theory methodology was used to explore women’s internalization of religious messages regarding their sexuality. Two research questions served as the guide for this study: how are women’s sexual self-views informed by their religious teaching, and how are these messages, along with their experiences, lived in them sexually, psychologically, and spiritually? Eleven women (ages 30-74) were chosen who had been raised in a Western Christian tradition in the US (8 Protestant, 3 Catholic). Participants were interviewed through an in-depth three-interview process to gain an understanding of their experiences and how they resolved their concerns with sex and spirit. The findings …

Arthur L. Washington, Twentieth Century Educator And Change Agent At Sumner High School, Herman Leo Harris
Dissertations
In the history of the United States, the Midwest, in general, and Missouri, in particular, has had a complex role concerning issues of race. For example, St. Louis was the site for the 1857 Dred Scott Case, which determined those of African ancestry could never become citizens. Fast forward to the 1940s and ‘50s and Missouri, as well as the rest of the United States, is still divided by race and largely segregated. As an African American man, Arthur L. Washington, would not be satisfied with the culture of the day. Born December 14, 1917, Washington envisioned the world with …

Oxidative Stress In Avian Embyros, Toshi Tsunekage
Oxidative Stress In Avian Embyros, Toshi Tsunekage
Dissertations
Oxidative stress has been implicated in mediating trade-offs in the evolution of life histories. Oxidative stress results from an imbalance in the production of free radicals and an organism’s antioxidant defenses. Higher metabolic rates associated with more rapid growth and shorter development periods may increase oxidative stress and accumulated cellular damage in embryonic tissues. In my dissertation I explored oxidative stress and antioxidant defenses in avian embryos. I measured levels of oxidative stress in tissues of different stage embryos of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica), and tested if patterns of lipid peroxidation could be explained by changes in the developing embryo’s …

Active Learning Strategies And Vocabulary Achievement, John Robert Griffith
Dissertations
Using a quantitative method of data collection, this research explored the question: Do active learning strategies used in grades 5 and 6 affect student vocabulary achievement in a positive or negative direction? In their research, Wolfe (2001), Headley, et al., (1995), Freiberg, et al., (1992), and Brunner (2009) emphasize the importance of understanding how children learn through active learning processes such as hands-on opportunities, cooperative learning, and technology-based instruction. Other researchers such as Baker, et al., (2000), Nagy, et al., (1987) and Searfoss, et al., (2001) stress the importance of meaningful vocabulary instruction when teaching reading. This study supports their …
Ecological Strategies And Disturbance Response Of Tropical Forest Trees: Insight From Functional Trait Variation, Oyomoare Lolade Osazuwa-Peters
Ecological Strategies And Disturbance Response Of Tropical Forest Trees: Insight From Functional Trait Variation, Oyomoare Lolade Osazuwa-Peters
Dissertations
Tropical forests store 40% of terrestrial carbon, process six times as much carbon as is released through fossil fuel use, and are epicenters of biodiversity. Despite all that we know about tropical forests, there remains much to discover about variation in ecological strategies, differences in the way species acquire limited resources through dissimilarities in construction and allocation patterns. We also know little as to how this variation shapes the resilience of tropical tree communities to disturbance. These forests are increasingly threatened by global change stressors, such as anthropogenic land-use and climate change. Recent advances in ecological literature show that …
Relationships Of Haemosporidian Parasites To Populations Of Their Avian Hosts In Eastern North America, Vincenzo Alexander Ellis
Relationships Of Haemosporidian Parasites To Populations Of Their Avian Hosts In Eastern North America, Vincenzo Alexander Ellis
Dissertations
Avian Haemosporida are common, vector-transmitted blood parasites of birds throughout the world. During my dissertation research, I explored how multiple host species respond immunologically to natural infections in the wild (Chapter 1) and to experimental infections in the laboratory (Chapter 2). Despite their tractability as a model host-parasite system and a burgeoning literature on avian Haemosporida, little is known about how their populations interact across large areas (hereafter “regions”). I present data from parasite surveys of birds across eastern North America suggesting that continental parasite populations track host populations across the region, but also that the host breadth of a …

Development Of The Regenerative Glycosylation Approach For Manual And Automated Oligosaccharide Synthesis, Swati Sudhir Nigudkar
Dissertations
It has been recognized that carbohydrates are involved in all phases of life beginning with the embryonic development and cell growth. However, it is the involvement of carbohydrates in the progression of various deadly diseases that gave these natural compounds significant roles in diagnostics and as pharmaceuticals. Although carbohydrates are highly desirable to the biological and medical communities, these molecules are still very challenging targets for chemists. Functionalization, derivatization, controlling anomeric stereoselectivity, purification, and characterization are all existing experimental hurdles towards producing synthetic carbohydrates in large quantities and high purity. Advances in chemistry and biochemistry have certainly facilitated the synthesis …

Soluble Amyloid-Beta 42 Aggregates Stimulate Cellular Inflammation Independent Of Cd47, Sanjib Karki
Soluble Amyloid-Beta 42 Aggregates Stimulate Cellular Inflammation Independent Of Cd47, Sanjib Karki
Dissertations
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the accumulation and deposition of aggregated amyloid-β protein (Aβ). Most of the studies indicate that Aβ1-42) and Aβ(1-40) play an important role in the neurodegenerative pathology in AD. A critical component of AD pathology is inflammation, which results from the activation of glial cells around the Aβ deposits. The goal of my dissertation research was to determine the role of Aβ aggregation in microglia-triggered inflammation and identify cellular components that mediate the inflammatory response. CD47 is a cellular receptor found on the microglia surface and it has been proposed to have …
