Background: Human Papillomavirus is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Approximately 42.5 million individuals in the U.S. are infected with disease-associated HPV and 13 million new cases occur every year. It is estimated that 85% of sexually active adults will be infected with HPV at some point during their lifetime. Most individuals infected with HPV are asymptomatic and clear the virus without any complications. However, in some individuals, the virus persists. Prolonged HPV infection has been associated with six different types of cancer and genital warts. There are approximately 37,000 cases of HPV-associated cancers diagnosed annually …

This report summarizes the findings obtained from a collaborative research project between the University of Mississippi Community First Research Center for Wellbeing and Creative Achievement (CREW), Southern University Agriculture Center, and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. The purpose of this research initiative was to examine the demand for nutrition incentive and produce prescription programs by farmers in rural areas across Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, and to examine to what degree, if any, local farmers are currently incorporated into existing USDA Farm Bill funded produce prescription and nutrition incentive initiatives based on the 2018 Farm Bill changes.

Normalized Linearly-Combined Chaotic System: Design, Analysis, Implementation And Application, Md Sakib Hasan, Anurag Dhungel, Partha Sarathi Paul, Maisha Sadia, Md Razuan Hossain Oct 2023

Normalized Linearly-Combined Chaotic System: Design, Analysis, Implementation And Application, Md Sakib Hasan, Anurag Dhungel, Partha Sarathi Paul, Maisha Sadia, Md Razuan Hossain

Faculty and Student Publications

This work presents a general framework for developing a multi-parameter 1-D chaotic system for uniform and robust chaotic operation across the parameter space. This is important for diverse practical applications where parameter disturbance may cause degradation or even complete disappearance of chaotic properties. The wide uninterrupted chaotic range and improved chaotic properties are demonstrated with the aid of stability analysis, bifurcation diagram, Lyapunov exponent (LE), Kolmogorov entropy, Shannon entropy, and correlation coefficient. We also demonstrate the proposed system’s amenability to cascading for further performance improvement. We introduce an efficient Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)-based implementation and validate its chaotic properties using …

Universal Aspects Of Barrier Crossing Under Bias, Sudeep Adhikari, Kevin S. D. Beach Oct 2023

Universal Aspects Of Barrier Crossing Under Bias, Sudeep Adhikari, Kevin S. D. Beach

Faculty and Student Publications

The thermal activation process by which a system passes from one local energy minimum to another is a recurring motif in physics, chemistry, and biology. For instance, biopolymer chains are typically modeled in terms of energy landscapes, with folded and unfolded conformations represented by two distinct wells separated by a barrier. The rate of transfer between wells depends primarily on the height of the barrier, but it also depends on the details of the shape of the landscape along the trajectory. We consider the case of bias due to an external force, analogous to the pulling force applied in optical …

Biomembrane-Based Memcapacitive Reservoir Computing System For Energy-Efficient Temporal Data Processing, Md Razuan Hossain, Ahmed S. Mohamed, Nicholas X. Armendarez, Joseph S. Najem, Md Sakib Hasan Oct 2023

Biomembrane-Based Memcapacitive Reservoir Computing System For Energy-Efficient Temporal Data Processing, Md Razuan Hossain, Ahmed S. Mohamed, Nicholas X. Armendarez, Joseph S. Najem, Md Sakib Hasan

Faculty and Student Publications

Reservoir computing is a highly efficient machine learning framework for processing temporal data by extracting input features and mapping them into higher dimensional spaces. Physical reservoirs have been realized using spintronic oscillators, atomic switch networks, volatile memristors, etc. However, these devices are intrinsically energy-dissipative due to their resistive nature, increasing their power consumption. Therefore, memcapacitive devices can provide a more energy-efficient approach. Herein, volatile biomembrane-based memcapacitors are leveraged as reservoirs to solve classification tasks and process time series in simulation and experimentally. This system achieves a 99.6% accuracy for spoken-digit classification and a normalized mean square error of 7.81×10−4$7.81 \times …

Ghosting From The Workplace: The Impact Of Feedback (Or Lack Thereof) On Applicants’ Psychological Needs Satisfaction, Natasha R. Wood, Christina Leckfor, Sydney Wicks, Andrew Hales Oct 2023

Ghosting From The Workplace: The Impact Of Feedback (Or Lack Thereof) On Applicants’ Psychological Needs Satisfaction, Natasha R. Wood, Christina Leckfor, Sydney Wicks, Andrew Hales

Faculty and Student Publications

Background: Applying for a job can be a stressful experience. When a potential employer chooses to not move forward with a candidate, they can either directly tell them or cease communication altogether—known as ghosting. Ghosting has harmful consequences, such as lower basic psychological needs satisfaction than direct rejection, and there has been an apparent increase in this phenomenon by potential employers. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of being ghosted after submitting a hypothetical job application.
Methods: An international sample of unemployed people (N = 554) completed an online job application task and were randomly assigned …

Events

Date: Wednesday, September 20 Time: 12:00-1:00 pm Location: Johnson Commons East Ballroom Facilitator: Cate Denial, Bright Distinguished Professor of American History, Chair of the History department, and Director of the Bright Institute at Knox College What does it mean to practice a Pedagogy of Kindness? This session will explore three tenets of compassionate teaching: justice, believing students, and believing in students. We’ll reflect together on what kindness (and its lack) has meant to us within academia, and how we can – piece by piece – assemble a kind approach to pedagogy that meets the needs of our students and ourselves …
